My issue with Cities Skylines is this

Seriously fuck Paradox. Making every game have >$100 worth of DLC that should have been in the base game shouldn't be accepted or supported.
My philosophy with PDX games used to be "buy the game, pirate the DLC", just so you had the ease of getting updates, access to the Steam Workshop, things like that. Hell, they're even pretty good about saying "Okay, we're updating the game soon, you can rollback to the previous version using the Steam Betas feature," so you don't have to worry about your ongoing campaign and its mods getting fucked over due to an update. But now, after the past few years of shitty releases, it's hard to justify even buying the base games. Vicky3 sucked ass, and CS2 apparently doesn't even use the Steam Workshop, you have to go and use their platform/launcher only, which is mind-numbingly stupid. Hell, it's really not even worth pirating the new releases.

And the majority of that DLC is the kind of stuff every other publisher just updates into their game for free.

For what it's worth, that one piece of DLC I have is something called Deep Focus Radio, which I guess is just a few extra background music songs. It came with Cities Skylines in a Humble Bundle, in the $1 tier. I think it's like four bucks normally. For some extra background music. And you know, as incompetent as Starbreeze and Overkill have been with Payday 2, even they don't have the gall to charge for new music.

I decided about a year ago that I'm just blacklisting any PC games that require an external launcher, and that policy seems to have a great side bonus of keeping a lot of greedy soulless bullshit out of my collection.

Honestly I usually listen to something on YouTube or Spotify while playing those types of games. If I really liked the soundtrack I'd listen to it out of game. The idea of paying for a few extra songs in-game when I could just listen to the whole OST on YouTube is appalling.

Again, I don't know why they're seemingly given a pass.

Speaking of Steam, I just found out that they have Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle on Steam, and it actually made me happy. Now, I don’t have to always keep checking on eBay wondering if the Sega Dreamcast version will go down in price, since scalpers always increase the American version of it, but not the Japanese version for some reason.

I’m stuck on Bomb the Base Act 2 in GTA 3 because I’m bad at sniper rifle stuff. It’s annoying though because every time you fail the mission instead of being able to just press the retry button like in GTA 5 you have to drive all the way back to the mission start point only to then immediately drive to the mission location again. Also doesn’t help that the entire plan the mission is based around is utterly retarded if you think about it for more than 5 seconds. Why can’t 8 ball just wait until I’ve sniped all the guards instead of running in when I’ve only killed the first two? Why didn’t we bring one of the generic mafia henchmen from Triads and Tribulations to act as his close quarters bodyguard if he can’t shoot people because of his busted hands instead of relying on me sniping like 20 dudes in 60 seconds? I’ve never even handled a sniper rifle before, he had to give me a free sniper rifle!

One of the big new features in GTA:SA was being allowed to retry the mission with only just a little bit of driving. It took them two big budget games to realize that their system for retrying a mission sucks ass.

I've been replaying middle earth shadow of war and it's wild how much a better assassin creed game it is than modern ac lol. It's truly a shame that the nemesis system hasn't been used again since this because it adds so much character to the game. I can't help but think about a game like mgsV with it, I'd love to be fighting against some African warlord whose missing an eye from the last time you headshot him talking shit lol. It's such a great system I wish wb would do something with it

I know they have their gay little patent or whatever but I thought it'd have been dope in CP2077. Let the player murder their way up a gang and start turf wars or something. Could have even done the same shit with the cops. Eventually they could become cyberpsychos.

If it wasn’t for the game running performing rather poorly on my PC I would would fully recommend picking up Robocop Rogue City when it’s $25 or less.

Teyon has taken everything they had built up with Terminator Resistance and easily exceeded upon it. It’s just a big dumb shooter and that’s why I love it. The critics aren’t lying the devs got the spirit of Robocop and this truly is the 3rd Robocop story we all deserved. I think the writing can be utterly hilarious and Peter Weller sounds great for being an old man.

Just be aware the combat will just be you blowing off the heads of goons. This is not some Boomer Shooter dynamic gameplay although Robocop’s specials help in giving the player some choice in how how to tackle the game.

Not only is this a throwback to the 80s but it’s a throwback to an earlier style of video game people like me grew up with and are likely nostalgic for. It’s the big dumb licensed video game. It exists to just be entertainment. I have no qualms about buying this game I want more AA content that’s just made to entertain. Not everything needs to be poignant or reinvent the wheel.

I’m excited to see what Teyon does next, if their Terminator game was a 7/10 this is easily an 8/10. Terminator was cool but environments were really boring where Rogue City’s Detroit is a lot of fun to just walk around and look at. If their next FPS is another Movie Franchise license then I think an Escape From New York game is a no brainer. Or maybe do They Live and let us avenge Roddy Piper by slaughtering alien skinwalkers.

@Homer J. Fong that's a good enough review for me to wishlist and pirate it. If it's as good as you say, I can def drop 20 to 30 bucks when it goes on sale. Thanks.

Regarding that second one, the closest thing I can think of is Happy's Humble Burger Farm, which I believe first had an Alpha release in 2020 and a full release in 2021. That might be a bit later in the trend, though, not the original. I remember Spooky's House of Jumpscares/Jumpscare Manor having a portion of its levels dedicated to the same concept, and that game came out in full release in 2017, though I'm not sure if that section was in the original early release back in 2014 or whatever, or was added much later, like with the HD renovation.
I was thinking the same. If I remember right, each enemy in Spooky's (not counting the DLC) is a parody/variant of various horror games/films. There's a Silent Hill section, several sections based on SCPs, and more I'm likely forgetting. The same guy allegedly made another game with a similar theme before Spooky, so maybe it's a reference to that? But I don't know it.

If their next FPS is another Movie Franchise license then I think an Escape From New York game is a no brainer.
Yes please. I remember the cancelled Escape from New York game, and then learning it was changed to Dead to Rights.

Ah who could forget the Max Payne wannabe with a dedicated button to have your trusty dog maul goons. I’m glad that wasn’t an Escape From game unless Carpenter had been willing to write for it.

I think the highest praise I can give to Teyon is that their writing team understands the source material and draws from it so well it almost feels like Verhoeven or Frank Miller served as an advisor. Robocop is of course satire of Reagan conservatism, lampooning militarized policing and prison privatization.

But what makes Robocop (as opposed to woke media that wants to be as smart as Robocop) is that it’s comic book levels of being Good vs Evil. Robocop IS the good guy, there’s no option of being wrong. The police are good too. The people Robocop arrests & fines are fine with the player’s decision. One guy caught doing graffiti was happy when I punished him with community service, he was excited because it meant he could now take down graffiti of his rivals. A drug dealer was ecstatic to go to prison, it meant he could just happily work doing laundry service where he found himself at peace. As for the countless goons you slaughter they only live to get their heads & limbs blown off, they attack first Robocop is always acting in self defense.

And that’s just good entertainment. It’s not soapbox politics it’s not telling you how to think about police & law and order. It has a clear political message but it’s not a polemic.

Escape From NY has similar themes but Carpenter played his cards closer. Something I think most devs would miss. I only trust this little Polish studio to not mess it up.

Honestly pretty much every game could be improved by adding in a nemsis type system. I know Star Renegades tried to do something like a nemesis system but it didn't really work that well cause it was just a little too half baked and the enemies didn't have enough of a personality.

OK, update on RicePigeon...turns out he's even more of a Bible Thumper than I thought. He's remaking his game as a RPG, but with this rant, I'm unsure what to think about him anymore....

He makes a couple decent points. And I disagree with the notion of not taking any games seriously at all, most people who think that also arbitrarily don't apply the same standard to film or literature.

Trying to wean myself off of live service games and gachas so I can actually start playing and beating the dozens of games on my backlog. It's retarded but the FOMO is real and I hate how affected by it I am.
I'm in a similar boat. I recently beat Tormented Souls. I bought it in September 2022 and started playing (and beat) it this week. That being said I'm probably not going to give up my one gacha.
