Are videogames for children?

Glorious double post:

Another 4-0 stop in the grand finale, and what's even more funny, people paid for tickets to attend live viewings for this. Fuck me, what a disappointment.
T90 and Redbull and whoever is doing tournaments need to change the drafts. Viper and Hera are too autistic for everyone else.

I just recently got All Quiet in the Trenches. I like World War I games and I usually get them if I see them and it's a fair price. It's set with the Germans, and it's still Early Access so it's limited to a few months of 1915-1916. I feel like it has potential but there are parts that are a bit goofy to me. The gameplay itself was very nice, but I did not care for the dumb political interjections nor do I like the ahistorical "we're not wearing helmets because personal flair" bullshit.

6/10. Maybe more if they improve the game.

Yeah, I can see how “omg it’s gotta be Viper!” is only entertaining for so long

This is a pretty funny review. It gets better the longer it goes on because of how ridiculous this game is. Did any of you ever play this back in the day?

I’ve been doing nothing but downloading games from Steam and GOG, yet I’ve only played just a few of them.

These two, on the other hand, looked pretty good to play:

The best part was that the second one was for free.

First one looks good but the enemy designs are strikingly bad for some reason.

After finally finishing making my Hideous Afterglow series, and being about 2/3 of the way through making a review of the Arcane Dimensions total conversion mod for Quake 1, I've been having another attempt at playing Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

If you missed out on it, KCD is an attempt at a super-accurate depiction of life in 1400s Bohemia (around modern day Czechia).
Everything goes to shit because the lazy and incompetent King Wenceslas IV is kidnapped (for the second time) by his half-brother Sigismund of Luxembourg, who starts razing villages and castles for silver and treasures to fund his army of foreigners he's using to subjugate the country in a bid for the throne of Bohemia.

You play as Henry of Skalitz, a blacksmith's son whose village is a victim of Sigismund's army, and you get to enjoy a really mechanically deep and thought-out Roleplaying Simulator, which does have a little bit of jank even after a plethora of updates but scores a 9.5/10 on the immersion front from me.

The game doesn't give you a good indication of when would be a good time to go out and do some exploring and levelling, so I went and searched some forums to find out when I wouldn't be restricted by obligations and time-pressure. After stealing a ring and needing to avoid the authorities in a particular town for a couple days, I made an effort to actually spend some time in the countryside and pay more attention to the world, and it's resulted in me already finding a few things I didn't know about, like adopting a dog, which even has its own related skill via 'Houndmaster'.

Everything is absurdly deep.
The game comes with a Mass Effect styled Codex of everything from world events, to the nuances of Feudal society, to explanations of branches of Christianity and the tavern games people played.
The simple act of talking to someone takes into account things like what you're wearing and how dirty it is, their position relative to you in the social hierarchy, your reputation in the given town, and even just people's attitude based on what's happening in the town or world. It's not about rolling dice and hoping like it is in Fallout 3, it's something you need to be autistic about.
Combat is brutally hard at first, as you don't even understand how to hold a sword properly. Getting someone to teach you means you'll be able to understand things like attack direction and proper blocking, and progresses into perfect parries, dodging and combos.
Even eating food can be kind of complex, as you need to think about spoilage what with refrigeration not being a thing, and weighing up hearty foods being 'Nourishing' while also making you ever so slightly sleepier. Alcohol effects work over time instead of instantly and leave you with a hangover, giving you a sweet spot in which you can exploit increased stats before the downsides kick in.
Hell, you can't even fucking read at the start, with books just being silly jumbles of letters until you get a scribe to teach you and then spend time practicing it yourself.

By all means it's not a perfect game, there's some animation jank, really bad lip sync in both cutscenes and in-engine, and you'll see some small stuff besides like people slightly clipping through if they walk beside each other. It's very unforgiving, and the save system might turn a lot of people off - there are SOME autosaves, but generally you can only Save On Exit, on sleeping in a bed you "own", or by using a consumable alcoholic item. But if you're the kind of RPG autist who wants to play a game where you play a specific role in a totally different very immersive and accurate setting, then it's worth looking into.

And there's no coons or soyshit. This is medieval europe, if these people saw a melanated individual they'd think he was a demon or something, and when people praise a female character it's because she actually is a good bitch within the events of the game and not because muh tokenism.

So there's been a new Tribes game in development I was unaware of.
Tribes 3: Rivals https://store.steampowered.com/app/2687970/TRIBES_3_Rivals/

Apparently, there's been drama with a popular user, and a subsequent purge.
I'm totally ignorant of what's going on but I did listen to some of his video and the examples of him doing any harassment seem non-existent, at least at first glance.
Gamer gate 4.0 when??

Thought this might be interesting to see for anyone interested in Tribes 3.

...SNIP...
Whatever do you mean?

I didn't realize that Prophecy Games was responsible for the Starsiege Tarkov knockoff, or that is was spun off from HiRez directly.
It's amazing to me how much ego clashes in game development. I can't understand not taking offered help to make a better product.

I was excited about tribes 3 when it was announced. Then they have more details. Then I got to play the alpha, and with every update the game got worse. I've tapped out, nobody making the game probably ever touched the original tribes, or even understands what's appealing about the game.

You'd have more fun and better results fucking with the physics settings in a Halo Online gametype and giving everyone bruteshot, rocket launchers, and plasma cannons than any of the recent attempts to revive Tribes.

I totally missed out on Tribes altogether, I saw a youtube video the other day where some guy was skiing of all things while playing CTF and its the first exposure I've ever had to any of the games.

It's not my thing because I prefer UT/Quake Arena type stuff, but I'm curious to hear what they fucked up with Tribes 3

tribes was the shit when the alternative was UT/quake arena shooters. 128 players? on huge maps? vehicles? sign me the fuck up!
skiing itself was the result of a physics quirk, but it did fit the game eventually since you're running around with jetpacks trying to cross huge maps as fast as possible anyway, so they kept it.

being scifi tho and a bit more involved it never really blew up like battlefield did. still had it own nice fanbase tho. there was a third game, which was basically like unreal 2 for the franchise, after that it went silent till hirez picked it up. it was more alongside the old games but still more limited than what was possible back then, but it still had it's own identity and fanbase after people could play a "new" game that looked "modern" ("gamers" are faggy this way, tribes 1+2 had been officially free for over a decade). however hi-rez being hi-rez of course they fucked it up and trying to make it work as a live-service game with microtransactions didn't help either.

enter tribes 3 and the cliffnotes so far are:
- UE5 (guaranteed to run like absolute ass)
- 7vs7 in the "competive" mode, otherwise 16vs16 (remember the series had 128 players at some point?)
- vehicles?

it's basically quake 3 skinwalking as a tribes game. add the studio already pulling shit, adding denuvo, journos gushing with fluffpieces I don't think anyone has any hope for it.

I am genuinely impressed by the new Contra: Operation Galuga. At first glance I thought it was just another middling retro cash grab but the fine folks at Wayforward have clearly put a lot of love into this game and I’ll probably support it if it launches at $20 or less. I really like how you get to select perks so a shitter like me can cheese through the difficulty by abusing the jetpacks the Probotectors have.

Beyond that I still suck at Tekken and Street Fighter but whatever maybe one day I’ll have the free time and willpower to be semi decent in those games. I’m still haplessly addicted to Balatro.

Overall I’m very happy with the current state of video games because it feels like there’s a small renaissance in games focusing on good game mechanics. Death to Looter Shooters and basically all mindless Action RPG bullshit.
