Fellas, I was sort of tentative on it before. But, HBR actually looks kinda good to me. Not just as a Jun Maeda project, but just in general. Like I said, I'll give the first chapter a try as F2P and tell y'all what I think.
First impressions. I like it. Keeping up with Key tradition by making the main character an autistic psychopath. Like she just takes a nap mid-conversation and wakes up like she just finished giving her whole spiel.

Are there any visual novels that don't have an anime or furry art style and aren't dating sims?

There's the silent hill one for gba I guess? At that point, what you probably want is a pc adventure game. Mystery of the Druids is good... For reasons that are very difficult to describe.

Hotel Dusk, it uses art based on real actors, it's rotoscoped. It's a detective mystery game, not a dating sim, and there's no furries because they didn't exist yet, the game takes place in the 70's.

A lot of doujin VNs from back in the day didn't even have character art because the writer lacked an artist, like much of the old Insani translated VNs.

or you could grow a pair and just enjoy the pretty anime girls
And better enjoy them while they last, if DEI consumes Japan too then it's just more niggers, trannies, fatties, and uglies coming our way.

That sounds super boring. Wouldn't that basically make it just a text adventure or something?

I saw someone say "Grisaia is Clannad if it was good" ten years ago and I'm still ass mad about it. I'm gonna find that fucker and kill him. No dissenting opinions allowed. All my homies hate Grisaia. (For real. The first game is good, the others kinda suck.)

You made me mad by letting me know such people exist.
I haven't quite finished the route yet, but I paused it for another one. The route really just hammers down the fact that Yuuji has no individuality, and that he really is a conduit for the behavior of others. Its such a critical character flaw that turns him into a complete idiot. Here I was thinking he had some self respect, but he just lets this crazy bitch go full nympomanic on him. She legit makes me scared with her obsession.

Hey, Idol Magical Girl Chiru Chiru Michiru is kino.

I think you mean Katawa Shoujo if it was good :)

Michiru. Bit more interesting than the sex pest, but ultimately falls a bit flat. Muv Luv Alternative Sumika, Remember11 Isubushi are much better examples of dissociative personality disorder. Her backstory should have been made much more simpler. Just saying she was born with a brain disease that required suppressants for her other personality would have been much better. I wanted way more BPD freakouts around the other girls because that was most interesting parts of her route. Should have replaced that with the vacation.

Yumiko. Haven't done Makina/Sac Route yet but I'd wager she is the best route. Of all the girls, she unironically seems like the most normal in terms of progression and backstory. Although they differ a bit, she reminds me of Senjoughara from Monogatari. Good ol' hedgehog syndrome.Might even say the novel, in general, is a bit of a Monogatari in some ways since they focus on girls with many personality disorders and family problems.

Her dissociative personality "disorder" was way less interesting than her purposely playing as the clown because it's easier, which is just fucking depressing. She's not BPD, dumb or overly emotional, but she just learned by others treatment of her that it's better to act stupid since no one will have any expectations of her for her she would fail to live up to. Issue is she does have her limits and when people pass them it's way too late. I don't know why that hits me so hard, guess is that she just gave up on life because she thinks she failed her parents.
Yumiko's issue is that she's vanilla compared to the other girls and her route is just by the numbers.
