If you want a bright red "pop" hue, undercoat with white, then use something like vallejo vermillion like Love_Machine said, or AK interactive deep red. Shade using a meaty purple, for example vallejo violet (blend 2:1 parts with the red and gradient from there on) and highlight with a light rose tone such as AK intense pink or vallejo pink (3:1 parts blended with red, then gradient).
Highlighting bright reds means stay away from orange, as they will devalue your results by the addition of yellow tint. Also traditionally, red is shaded with... black (gasp!) but you are painting a bright carapace, not a cape or a curtain, so that rule gets tossed out too. A friend loves shading reds using a tan or brown, as with all things practice first and see if you like the results.
