If you want a bright red "pop" hue, undercoat with white, then use something like vallejo vermillion like Love_Machine said, or AK interactive deep red. Shade using a meaty purple, for example vallejo violet (blend 2:1 parts with the red and gradient from there on) and highlight with a light rose tone such as AK intense pink or vallejo pink (3:1 parts blended with red, then gradient).

Highlighting bright reds means stay away from orange, as they will devalue your results by the addition of yellow tint. Also traditionally, red is shaded with... black (gasp!) but you are painting a bright carapace, not a cape or a curtain, so that rule gets tossed out too. A friend loves shading reds using a tan or brown, as with all things practice first and see if you like the results.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going for an ash grey flesh with bright red carapace and I've settled on the right grey, but the red has been eluding me so far. I'll take a look into the paints you suggested.

Oh, and regarding the blending, I assume you're suggesting I mix the violet and the pink with the red, then thin it down to glaze consistency and apply as a gradient, correct?

Correct. You mix the paints in those ratios and then blend to darken (in the case of shades) or blend to brighten (in the case of highlights). If you must have absolute smoothness, consider adding a retarding agents like citadel Lahmian medium or any matte-medium, vallejo and everyone else has their own version of this.

It can be helpful to have something from real life to visualize, so I've added this unrelated photo of a Ferrari 458. Pay attention to the side door, the bright blue sky reflects as a pink value, and there is generally minimal to no dark reds except on few points such as the side of the windshield, near the rear wheel and some reflections from the road.

New NuSquat lore.
TL;DR:
-Squat ancestors were sent out on generation ships long ago, possible pre/early Golden Age of Tech.
-They are all clones, but genetically engineered to have specific traits clones, not identical clones of specific dwarfs. Baseline is just stronger and tougher, but infravision and faster reaction times are mentioned
-They are engineered to have minimal warp presence, and do not suffer from Pyschic mutations.
-They can create pyschers, though it may just be for FTL. They have a different FTL referred to a barrier-tech to access the immaterium, so maybe just a form of navigators instead of full on wierdos

Guess that explains the 20 man trooper squads if they are vat grown. I personally like the idea of de-Weeb-ified Tau.

Maybe the Demiurg are the kin who accepted the Tau.

My sister bought me a McFarlane genestealer a while back, and while it looks cool, it will not stand up. It's lying in a collapsed, drunken heap on my computer desk.

Finally picked up a .5 needle airbrush for stuff like priming and base coating larger models. Trying to do that with my .3 Iwata was increasingly a pain in the ass, even if it is a very nice airbrush.

So with all of the new plastic vehicle kits that have been confirmed for Horus Heresy what are you guys buying? I’m getting the Spartan for certain but i’m waiting to see if the Kratos gets 40K rules.

I'm definitely grabbing the Spartan, Sicaran, and a couple of Deimos Rhinos.
I'm not sold on the Kratos either; it looks cool, but I feel like I'd rather just run a Sicaran squadron instead.

I swore to myself that I would never buy 40k minis again but ever since I had the Tau Combat Patrol come in I really want to buy it.

I'm grabbing the box, 2 boxes of marines, the special weapons box, and the box with plasma heavy weapon.

Got my Chaos Knight box this afternoon. Looking forward to lots of assembly and maybe some painting this weekend.
