, but if you're a Disney adult who enjoys dropping money on brand, there are a number of successful wargames in the form of Star Wars Shatterpoint/Legion and Marvel Crisis Point.
The problem with these games(Legion and MCP have already started running into this) is that since they're licensed games the creator of the game can't add anything new. Disney won't let anyone go near the old republic setting for whatever reason, and without that it's gotten to the point of having to include your Glup Shitto's and random variant #10 of Luke in a different costume. MCP is doing the same with characters as well, but at least there's a larger pool of those characters. Shatterpoint is relatively new so it'll be a while before it hits this point. But eventually once the publisher of the game has to reach so far into the barrel they're doing variations of things the mainstream fans haven't heard of because the repeat characters aren't even selling, they fall off real fast and it isn't like Disney is currently doing anything to add new shit that people actually like to Star Wars or Marvel.

Infinity’s online presence is basically non existent now but I’m told it’s still kicking in certain gaming scenes.

Honestly if they got a video game or something it would get them on top. Video games really do help a lot more than people wanna admit.
Maybe, but it's a huge risk. GW hands out their license to any idiot so they're a terrible example. But really the biggest problem is that it needs to be a quality game, that doesn't copy the existing tabletop(this is why there's still no "proper" official 40k video game) so it doesn't cannibalize sales, while still having enough depth within the universe to actually tell an interesting enough narrative to get people interested, and cover enough factions to pique that potential customer interest in more than one set of models. You say it helps, but outside of GW(and again, most of those games are shit) there aren't any video games helping sales of tabletop wargames unless you want to count Battletech but even that seems like a stretch since while there is overlap I doubt there's actually that much. The warmachine videogame was shit. There isn't really anything for historicals to tie into Bolt Action, Black Powder, etc. Sure there's a World of Tanks tabletop game now, but I've never seen anyone really even mention it on youtube, reddit, etc.

I don't hang out at the local game stores. They're staffed by neckbeards that are constantly pressuring you to spend money. A lot of the players there are social justice warriors that I don't want to be around. They have 6 tables with full sets of terrain, but 9 times out of 10, someone has pushed the terrain to the side and is using the table to play MTG. The in-store prices for models is higher than just ordering it online, and in this area, you can get same/next day shipping on most GW products due to the proximity to multiple Amazon warehouses. The only thing I ever use them for are when I need an single pot of paint, and half the time they don't have what I'm looking for outside of their Citadel paints, and I wouldn't use Citadel paint if it was free. If you try to bring in a 3d printed model to play with, or if they catch you talking about 3d printing with other customers, they will ban you. I know everyone's local gaming shops are probably unique, but all the ones around me suck, and I'd rather not play the game if it means having to play with them.

I don't understand why anyone would play outside of their friend group if their stores are like this. Regardless of how fun the game is, it doesn't justify spending 3-6 hours hanging out with a bunch of faggots that would hate you if you gave them the chance. Even then, my friends have lost a lot of their drive to play and keep up with rules updates since the female custodes retcon. They aren't based, but we left other tabletop games for 40k specifically because they were going woke. They can see the writing on the wall and don't want to keep dedicating time and money to something that's starting to get gay. We're having conversations about reverting to an old edition, or just never moving forward when 11th edition eventually comes out.

but every major D&D competitor is dead or on life support; the only reason things might look livelier is because it's much cheaper to publish your hearbreaker than it is to make a proper wargame, especially if you actually want to sell to Zoomers and need a miniature line rather than chits.
In regards to D&D competitors, I feel like the Cyberpunk TTRPG has been gaining traction in a similar manner to Battletech. The video game and anime adaptations have made people interested the the newest edition of the game (cyberpunk RED) and the game recently got an Edgerunners anime themed mission kit. D&D still owns a monopoly on fantasy TTRPGS but competition is starting to emerge, especially outside of Fantasy themed TTRPGS.

1. Fortunately not every store is the shit show you described
2. Not everyone has enough friends into something like 40k, and even if you did have a couple of friends into it that doesn't mean people want to play the same 1-2 opponents every couple of weeks because even if those people have a couple of armies each that shit would still get boring real fast
3. Not everyone has the space to setup a table, and store terrain when it isn't in use

As far as playing at the local store, show up before the MTG players and shove them out of the way? If the tables are occupied, they can fuck off elsewhere or the store can provide more space.

Do you guys not have phones?

Aside from my army and dice, all I bring is my phone.
I play with a lot of grogs that ask you to bring your books. I also need a tape measure to measure movements.

It’s kind of crazy how bad of a disadvantage you have when your average S and T are 3 for a lot of things. Makes trying to create space between my army and armies like custodes and orks another thing to worry about.

Kick out the tranny regulars? Yea. That will go great.

I do bring the books, just in digital form. I'm unwilling to pay $60 for a book that's out of date before the delivery man can get it to my house. The way I see it, the rules are the rules. If you need to show your badge of financial devotion to get games with some people, I'll just have to suffer without them.

The game is fun, but not fun enough to deal with the people I would have to play with.

If you've got a large enough play group, say... 4-6 people that's occupying 2-3 tables right there. The store already has terrain so clearly they offer some support for people playing. Yes, if you simply show up before the tranny MTG players do, then the tranny MTG players won't have a spot. That's how most things in life work with regard to getting a place in line.

wtf are the trannies going to do? show up in the middle of your game, sweep your models and the stores terrain off the table, and demand you leave so they can play MTG? No.

I do have a large group of friends that play, but we've all been told not to play there because everyone uses at least 1 non-GW model. They have a 0 tolerance policy on 3d printing.

For the most part the index cards don’t deviate much from the codexes, so if you must have a physical copy of the stats then they’re much cheaper than the codex books. That said, very little changes from them to the codex and they seem to go on clearance as soon as the codex drops.

No way a regular game store disallows 3D printing, I walked into a GW and saw a teenager with an army that had scattered 3d printed bits on GW models and a custom hq that looked mostly original and he was playing freely.

The LGS I play at has a 3D printing service.

Glad to hear about everyone else's experience being allowed to use 3d printed models. Unfortunately, I don't have that luxury. If you even start talking about it, they will ask you to leave.

Id say even in the fantasy themed parts D&D gots some competition, like Warhammer Fantasy, I heard Pathinder 2e started picking up some steam or somethin. But ye, outside of fantasy D&D def been gettin lots of other games getting more interest.

but it works. no one blames GW and everybody still knows warhammer. so as a vehicle to sell the brand quality doesn't really matter for some reason when it comes to warhammer.

Seriously, not even warhammer world, their HQ, has a complete ban on 3d printed bits and actually allowed some back in their event rules in 2019(granted, they also claimed you needed to somehow be able to prove you modeled the shit yourself, which is kind of ridiculous as if you're going to bring up the mesh in a viewer app on your phone or something?)

And any other regular game store.. even if you're printing models they can still sell you paint, grass tufts, etc. it's just been way too common since even before covid for a shop with any sense to be banning people for that shit at this point.

Warhammer has always kinda been able to slide by any major critique fandom wise. Warhammer fans are arguably the same tier of Sonic autists but don’t seem to get ridiculed for it its like the golden child of the internet right now.

Wargaming isnt going anywhere. Warhammer is still routinely selling out pretty much every product GW makes. The only recent exception were the Kroot models. GW is also working on building a new factory as we speak. Its literally bigger now than it has ever been.

Remember too that the people that actually play Warhammer is a very small percentage of the total customer base. Warhammer, and basically all wargames, can be pretty neatly divided into three categories: lore buffs, model builders, and players. Someone can be all three of these things, but by the nature of how much this game requires you to invest in order to play it, being just one or even two is more common. Generally being into the lore is first, followed by building models, and thats where a lot of people stop.

Warhammer is autistic, that's for sure. But it's definitely on the bottom most tier of insane fandoms, especially in regards to cooming. You can't really mock the fandom that much.
