Warhammer 40k

I saw a Khainite Slaughter Coven box for a huge discount and bought it.

Was it a mistake adding to backlog? Yes.

Was it a great find? Also yes.
Nothing beats buying Warhammer at a big discount. HH 3.0 might have gotten off to a very shaky start but that starter box was really cheap online, even the limited run AoS starter box was going for a decent price in most places and was available for quite some time.

Tickles something in your brain when it happens. Never thought AoS would be my next buy but a bargain is a bargain.

I see a lot of kitbashes with the HH kits used in 40k. GW should become a bits supplier at this stage, total vertical integration of their product

They're so fuckin cool, bros

"First one at a time, then in squadrons and finally in fleets, the orks began to flee from Kayvas...

The behaviour patterns of the ork crews began to change... the xenos exhibited conduct that more closely resembled panic. They would take chances, running the gauntlet of the Blood Angels blockade when the odds were stacked against them. It was almost as if there were something at their backs that they feared far more than the guns of Sanguinius’s Legion...

No one knew what the Alpha Legion had done to make the orks run... All that was certain was that the Alpha Legion had gone dark, only rising to send regular communiqués out to the blockade fleet that contained little more than a message to ‘maintain the line’.

The handful of orks that were captured alive gave incomprehensible answers under interrogation that muddied the waters still further. As the fleet stood and held the barricade, patrols scanning deep into the belt picked up all manner of hectic alien transmissions, and scry-sensors showed definite evidence of ork-versus-ork battles taking place closer to the blue sun.

Then, several months into the campaign, ships in the spinward quadrant detected the destruction of a massive, moon-sized planetesimal by unknown means. Sanguinius himself sent queries to the 88th and the response was that the event was ‘of no concern’."
That's from Fear to Tread isn't it?

I will concede that Mcneill is a sick fuck, but he has a very good ability to tell a story and keep me turning the page. Not much of a reading afficianado but he's an author I would definitely recommend to people getting into 40k. Nightbringer was my second 40k book and I think it holds up very well despite some of the lore being retconned.
You got me looking up other books of him and i do remember thinking fulgrim was a pretty nice read, but it was published 5 years before, maybe he grew a lot in those 5 years and storm of iron is just a rough patch.

They are the bits supplier, only difference is that they have no reason to take the bits out of the sprue since it is easy enough to repackage unsold sprues into new battleforces.

Don't know how to start this off, but I'm trying to get back into 40k(stopped during 7th edition) and I'm actually having a hard time picking a faction. Figured I'd ask for your opinions if I'm debating between regular SM, BT or DA. Also generally any other advice you might think is useful.

They used to be lol, but it goes against their modern business model of extracting maximum value from their customers. I remember back when GW had the big book of bits in the store, and a paper form you would fill out to order individual parts decals and specialist games. In some cases it was the only way to get certain "accessory kits" like the iron hands bits or chapter specific SM pauldrons.

That was also when it was mostly metal bits. Logistically it makes zero sense to try and sell bits when it's all plastic from sprues because you'd end up with a warehouse full of half empty sprues that would eventually need shredded. That's before considering you'd need staff to go pick orders and sit there clipping parts off of sprues. Sure the margins on injection molded plastic are incredibly high once the molds have been paid for with sales, but you'd kill your profits doing that.

Someone wants 2 heads from a sprue and what, pay you $2? A person could probably handle what, 5-6 of those an hour? Any more and you'd be paying more staff. Warehouse space to house these shelves of sprues, inventory sitting around not being sold in this warehouse space, guy clips the parts packs them in a padded envelope and ships them then needs to put the sprues back or run a couple of sprues through a shredder for recycling instead of storing what would now be partial sprues. And once that order is packaged you've got to ship it so that'll be a minimum of another $2 in cost that someone has to pay for. They're already getting away from all but the lowest volume product(characters for specialist games and shit) cast in resin. And setting up a 3d print farm to provide the bits service would be more cost because you'd still need warehouse space for it, ventilation, ensuring compliance for waste disposal and that employees have PPE to deal with a resin print farm, someone cutting up their CAD files and making them into STLs to print and managing this massive file database all without it getting leaked. It's just more cost on top of more cost.

There's also the old rumor about the old US warehouse with the shelving collapse when parts were metal, resulting in piles of parts that they couldn't be bothered to sort and eventually just sold off by the pound as mostly scifi and mostly fantasy that ended their bits selling service in the first place.

*Snipped a whole lot about the economics of plastic crack*
I understand why they don't do it with the plastic parts. And from statements of old Gdubs employees, the bits service didn't really make money and was always destined to be cut when pewter minis made their exit(fine cast was a fluke and a mistake). However I would make an argument that they could sell individual sprues and make decent money on that. Know alot of guys who would kill for half vehicle kits to make scatter terrain. But I wasn't arguing for it to come back, just reminiscing on how it was.

Don't know about that personally. I know that when lead got banned they had to reformulate the pewter and that was the start of the move away from it. Good riddance anyways, the metal sucked to work with.

I have parkinson's disease so no miniature painting for me. Any good sellers your aware of on Etsy for miniatures ^_^ thank you
Don't know about Etsy but eBay is a great place to look for prepared armies

You can also commission someone to paint an army for you if you can find someone in your area

Finished the last marine, gonna paint the bases a bit later when I get home, but this time I shaded him with Nulln Oil and used a sponge to try and add some highlights, though Idk if you can tell because of the lighting

How about fiverr ?
Yeah if you can find someone to do it for you

Any recommendations for traveling with minis? I'll be flying and would like to bring my models with me if possible. I'm thinking pluck foam is likely the best option, and then pray the airlines are merciful with my luggage.

So I found this, it's about 30ish bucks, but if you don't want to waste the money on that, you can probably make your own with a case and some pluck foam.

One reason I loved the RPGs as a way to get into the setting was little gems like this:

The story of Emil Vendigroth is held up as a cautionary example of the dangers which this practice can present. According to the records of his ship’s First Officer, Vendigroth was negotiating safe passage with a xenos admiral, using the Eldar tongue. The Rogue Trader agreed to what he believed to be exceptionally favourable terms, only to find his counterpart rejecting his payment out of hand. When they met again, in an attempt to clear up the confusion, the shuttle holding both their delegations was incinerated by a pulsar lance from a passing Eldar corsair, who had intercepted their transmissions, and considered the entire exchange an insult to his language and culture. Vendigroth’s heir still avoids the region of space where his predecessor fell, fearing he might be called to uphold whatever bizarre bargain the xenos believe was struck
Rogue Trader - Stars of Inequity

You just won't see things like this in novels or rulebooks.

I used to travel and do intro games for various tabletop stuff. My first recommendation would be to not fly and to drive instead if possible, airlines will not be kind to your minis. If you have to fly look into battlefoam products and other similar products, those should protect them. Also if you're not transporting a huge army try to finangle it into being your carry on bag.

As an absolute last resort, I've seen people go to the extreme and ship their models via UPS/FEDEX a week or so ahead of their trip. They'll ship the army to the hotel they're staying at and coordinate with them to pick it up when they arrive.

So, Ive been thinking. The current orks detachments kinda play off their clans, Taktikal Bridgade is Blood Axe stuff, Dakka-Dakka and Dread Mob are more Bad Moons, War Horder and Bully Boyz are clearly Goff related and Speed Freaks is well Red Sunz, Da Big Hunt is Snakebites, while Green Tide is just an all around. I do wonder if we'll get something related to Freebotaz and DeathSkullz, since with the latter you can do like giving your invul re-rolls of ones.
