We Need To Talk About Cats.

Cats are vile bundles of shit and piss that they're capable of spraying staggering distances without reason. They obliterate entire ecosystems and breed ridiculously fast to out-compete everything else.

Kill.
Them.
All.
I don't mind people who keep their cats indoors, but I get your point about people who let their cats roam about.

Main issue I have with them is that they're simultaneously legally treated as being both wild and domestic. So if you have a neighbour that's irresponsible with their cats, you'll have to deal with those fuckers shitting and pissing all over your fucking garden, or trying to kill any outdoor pets you keep, and there's nothing you can do about it.
Since they're "a wild animal", you can't go after the owner like you would a dog because it's not technically their responsibility, but you can't put down traps or anything similar like you could with a wild animal because "they're someone's property".

Also people get way too soft over cats for some reason. In Australia, there was an infamous dude who would trap and kill feral cats due to the damage they were doing to the local ecosystem in the place where he lived, and some people started sending death threats to the dude purely because of what I can only assume is toxoplasmosis-induced brainrot.

You hit the "argument against cats" nail on the head. They do indeed have "duality" in the sense of being free and somebody's pets. My (former) snowflake neighbor in the back took to shooting our cats that were sitting on the back block wall, minding their own business. I heard him doing it one morning and saw pellets whizzing through the trees by the fence. Talk about instant Hulk rage!

I calmed myself down, then took a play toy stuffed cat, tied a rope around it, attached a note and lowered it over his side of the wall: The wall is community property and I saw you shooting at my cat this morning. If you want to play pew-pew, I'll carve the back of your house apart. Do NOT shoot my cats - they shoot back. By the way, you're a fucking douche!

Soyboy called the cops. Showed the officer the airgun he was using to shoot the cats, showed him the stuffed cat and the note. Cop came around the block to my house. Was he shooting your cats? Yes. Did you write this note? Yes, and I mean it. Please don't do that, sir. It just creates so much damned paperwork for me and a great big mess. He admitted shooting the cats and showed me the gun. Do you want me to charge him with animal abuse, I can do that. I know I'd be pissed if somebody was shooting at my dog. No, I'm not filing charges at this time. Okay, here's my card and phone number. If he shoots the cats again, call me directly and I WILL arrest him for animal abuse. Thank you Officer; have a nice day! (Soyboy and witch wife put the house on the market and moved shortly after that incident; the new older Asian lady doesn't mind the cats at all.)

The fallacy of the Australian guy is that eliminating the ferals does nothing but kill a cat. As soon as one is gone, another moves in and takes it place. Trap, Neuter/Spay, Release is the policy here in AZ. As I said earlier in this thread, it took my (good) neighbor and I nearly 3 years to clean up the feral problem in our neighborhood. And it was time well spent as we got all of the breeders and it's extremely rare to see a feral around here anymore. There used to be this old chick that dressed like Indiana Jones and was a "professional" cat hunter. I'd see her at the low cost spay clinic bringing in like six trapped cats nearly every time I was there. That woman was truly dedicated to the cause!

LOL instead of a whip she used a laser pointer. 😸

I love cats, I miss having one. They're like that one friend you just chill out with in the same room and don't feel any constant obligation to engage them, you're just both happy to be in each others presence.

Also with the societal shift to keeping cats indoors now, I'm happy to see there's more and more people getting into the habit of buying a harness and taking them walks.

They're just lovely pets so long as you know to let them have their boundaries. I think a lot of people, especially folk more used to dogs, just hate how they aren't as generally lax with being randomly hugged and picked up. My little guys used to be so cuddly!

At my mom's insistence, I got one of those a couple years ago and tried to put it on one of my cats.

Most of the scars are still visible.
I'd love to try them sometime if I get a new cat some day, but I can totally imagine it being one of those things that take a long time to get used to... I hear some breeds enjoy it more than others!

I had a particularly cheeky cat who used to run and pounce on my legs, and bite at my arm during the night. I still have those scars too... Luckily as he got older he mellowed out and would sleep on my feet instead of mauling them. Kittens have really.. Needley claws. (:_(
