Weight loss support thread

I just had this idea of briskly walking in place (and even moving around the room) when I do clothes sorting so I'm not sitting all the time. It's a small thing, but I was able to do it for about an hour before my legs started getting tired.

So I figure now is as good a time as any to jump into this thread.
4 years ago, I weighed 102kg. My legs hurt when I walked 100m, I got out of breath walking up a slight incline, I'm pretty sure I was insulin resistant, I constantly felt like I was on a massive sugar crash, and my resting heart rate was 80bpm.
I half-arsed my weight loss until the beginning of 2013 and lost around 8kg total.
I finally got sick of being fat and tired all the time, and got serious.
Today, I weigh 73.5kg, which makes me only ~0.7kg overweight. I have less than 10kg to go before I reach my final weight goal. I've lost almost 3 clothing sizes since the beginning of last year. My waist-to-hip ratio is down into the healthy range and falling.
I can swim close to 40 laps of butterfly. I can cycle 50km and barely feel it. I'm deadlifting more than my own body weight for reps. As long as I've had enough sleep, I have massive amounts of energy all the time. My resting heart rate is down to 51bpm.
Apart from the fact that I weigh more, I'm in better shape than I was as a teenager.

I'm 168cm and 78 kg currently.
I used to fluctuate around 60-65 kg for the longest time, until I moved out and my food intake and metabolism both changed (I was just 18 at the time).

It really sucks because I never had stretchmarks until now :(
Nevertheless, I've picked up on both Pole Dancing classes and Bouldering in my free time, which already helped a lot. It didn't change my weight, but I've gotten more muscular in the past year so I'm pretty sure I've managed to turn some fat into muscle, so to speak.

The big issue for me though, is food. I was very used to not gaining a bit, and eating whatever I wanted without gaining weight, but now that's really not the case.

Most annoying thing being that a lot of recommended snacks are/contain (pea)nuts and I'm deadly allergic to those.

As dumb as it sounds though, the thing that got me off of snacking randomly is the tongue piercing I got recently, because during the healing period I've been adviced to only eat 3 times a day and no snacks

If anybody saw the pic I posted in the pic thread in off topic, you can see that even at the biggest size I could get it, I still can't properly fit into my $600 leather jacket. I've noticed that my pants feel tighter too and I have difficulty putting them on. FML.

It was several weeks ago when I was eating an entire box of donuts and got a craving for Fritos that I realized that things had to change. Working in fine dining restaurants and in a kitchen where they prepare large amounts of food for large group activities certainly doesn't help, nor does the copious amounts of free soft drinks on tap. So I started to limit my intake of soft drinks to only once a day and only a glass of the stuff and drink more water instead. Since yesterday, I have not had one drink of soda at all and I hope I can keep it up. It's like they never took out the cocaine in coca cola. Food will be harder to control though because of the obvious perks. Maybe just concentrate on intake rather than what I eat?

Finally I guess I have to be more active. But I hate gyms for various reasons. I do live right next to a state park though. Maybe I can take up hiking?

I've found that the easiest substitute for soda to me is carbonated water, because the thing I crave most is really just the refreshing feeling ahout it. Maybe it'll help you too?
If you don't like the regular taste of it you can still flavour it lightly with anything as long as you don't load it with sugar.

Hiking sounds like a very nice plan, though the thing for me to get me moving really is to pick specific sports that've always stirred my interest, because if you're not doing something you really like to do you'll have a pretty high risk of quitting anyway.

/Advice

I hope I'm not rambling too much.

Hiking is good. Anything you enjoy that gets you moving is good.

But also just go to the gym if you need to squeeze in some cardio or lifting. I promise other people aren't judging you or paying attention to you.

I have a doctor's appointment for the 29th to get a referral for a possibly vertical sleeve gastrectomy. I've lost 90 pounds before, college kind of ruined that loss, the dieting is not an issue I'm afraid to face for the rest of my life, I just need the hand to get the weight low enough that real physical activity will be possible and I can stop looking like an honorary Saltan sister.

Other wise I've dropped 15 pounds in the last 2 weeks, partly due to stress from a family issue and some diet adjustments; mainly cutting back on carb intake since I'm not a bread person, especially not when stressed and rice has been too annoying to be bothered while dealing with this family garbage.

Breakfast was 145 cal fruit in water with no added sugar and 2 over easy eggs with no salt.
Lunch will be a protein shake, 1/2 cup of rice, kimchi and a small salad.

If all goes well I'll be able to get under the knife sooner rather than later and get on track in a way that is less reliant on my emotions.

I've found that worrying too much about food and getting obsessed with sugar, what's in the ingredients and calories it started to not only stress me out, but turn me off from my progress. If you start worrying and thinking all you can safely eat is water and certain veggies/fruits (it seems the experts constantly change which ones are good for you and what's not), it makes everything a chore.

I stopped eating peanuts as an appetite suppressant since they have too many calories from fat, been using applesauce instead of eggs for baking (even been a fan of eggs anyway) as well as cutting out food that has high fructose corn syrup (and regular corn syrup). I also didn't want to be paranoid over hidden sugars and constantly worry that even bread would be bad for me. There's just so much conflicting info from organic stuff being a fraud to avocados being bad for you and then having it all change in a year. How do you guys handle it?

I just try to eat a good balance of nutrients while staying in a caloric deficit. I also go on how I feel: if I have heaps of energy and my strength and athletic performance are constantly improving, I'm probably doing something right.

I always recommend the Paelo Diet as I've had great result both weight and health wise but it's more of a lifestyle change then just a diet.

Pros: lots if meat, fats and veggies

Cons: no sugar no bread no pasta.

But I lost over 50lbs in two years and I feel awesome and once you lose the sugar jones life gets so much better.

I don't fuck with paleo myself but I do abstain from sugar and it's amazing how many health benefits come with doing so.

Cut back the last week to an average of 1350 cal, low refined carbs, more fresh veggies and vegan protein to supplement. The most refined thing I've had this week aside from the protein is 3 slices of swiss cheese and maybe 2 servings of rice crispies.

I'm sleeping less cause of the changes. I honestly can't seem to sleep for more than 6 hours a night and I'm not complaining.

Since Monday of last week I've been going to the gym with my friends four times a week for about two hours each time. We are all tired of being couch potato fatasses, especially my friends with their 9-5 sedentary desk jobs.

Cardio involves 30 minutes of elliptical. The rest of the time involves strength training of some sort: arms, core, or legs. It's MUCH more fun to go to the gym with a group of friends rather than alone. We all share the pain and gain experiences. Also it helps that one of those friends used to be on the track team in high school so he can tell us all how to exercise and stretch correctly.

We are probably the nerdiest group of gym-goers at Planet Fitness; two of those friends are professional Super Smash Brother Melee players. I have since bought this and this workout tank. I'm thinking about buying this one in the future as well. You gotta look good and show off nerd pride when you work out!

Hey, I just found this thread. I started working out over a month ago, and it's been full of ups and downs, but over all, I've gone down from 220 lbs to 205 lbs. The biggest game changer was using myfitness pal to track what i've been eating, and using a food scale.

Nice. I've been looking to get a nerdy tank myself for the gym. I'm looking at getting this. It's pricey but worth it IMO.

edit: I didn't notice, but it's dropped down in price!

I've started my journey of trying to lose around 20 pounds. I'm slightly overweight but I am not yet at the point where I can be called obese, but I was getting close. Decided to join weight watchers and in my first week lost 3.2 pounds. ^_^ My goal is to lose that weight within 6 weeks, but I'll be happy to get to 15.

I've been concerned about my weight for a while, especially when I'm on the computer all day at work. Even if I may not always be able to get out for a walk, which I've been trying to do at least once a day, it is amazing what portion control and reducing the sweets (especially softdrinks) can do for you. I was shocked when I started to pay attention to the label of how sugary juice drinks can be. I thought juice was healthier then soda but looking at the label some of them can be worse then even the soda in terms of sugar. A bottle of Minute Maid Lemonade has 67g of sugar where Mountain Dew has only 46g.

Drinking carbonated water instead soda helps too, I get the sensation of soda without the junk that comes with it. And I am trying to go with the light version of things when I can.

I'm also looking into getting into Yoga to improve my flexibility to work out.

I'm slightly overweight

Walking is great, but you need more.

Build up some muscle. Does not have to be typical "LIFTIN BRA" stuff. Start with basic bodyweight exercises.

Pushups. Squats. Pullups. If you can't do a pullup, just start by hanging on the bar (or tree branch, whatever is handy) to get your grip used to it.

More muscle = high metabolism.

I was thinking of getting into weight lifting to build some upper body didn't think of the benefits of increasing my matabolism. I have tried doing a pushup but right now my upper body is weak. I'm not saying I can't because I know I can if I keep trying. I read somewhere that doing wallpushups are good for building up the muscles initially.

The first week I was exercising my muscles hurt like hell, and I was so stiff that I could barely move. Nowadays I eat cherries to combat muscle soreness and inflammation (cherries are in season for the summer anyway!), and apply Badger Joint Balm topically to also combat the pain. I'm all about those natural remedies: I don't need to overdose on NSAIDs and damage my liver.
