Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

I didn’t even want to participate in the Bluey hype, even if it is a good children’s show. Though, I fear that if a high profile American executive in Hollywood tried to do a crossover with this cartoon with, say, another well-known and successful cartoon in the modern era, I can see most kids and young adults side with the blue dog with the Australian accent.

If anything, compromise is the key.
Of course, I do know of the “The best way to play the game and in order to win is to sometimes not play at all, yada yada yada, etc.”

I’m just speaking of an already educated guess here.

How do you guys feel about the cartoon metal family? I think the writing is getting better as the show goes on and the writers seem to at least try and tell a coherent narrative. Compared to helluva boss and the proud family reboot this seems like some Picasso level shit. Some of the humor does not appeal to me and sometimes it makes me cringe but other than that and some nitpicks I have I think it's a decent cartoon. English dub is dog shit though.

I still can't get over the fact that glam's faggot ass was getting his wrists all bloody over what looked like to be a wooden ruler. kek.
I think it's pretty good so far, the english adaptations are also decent to listen to. However Youtube has been screwing over Russian content creators so I hope it lasts long enough.

I'm going to be incredibly charitable (cos I haven't actually watched it) and assume that all the talk about Bandit and Chili is true and that they're very well written parents.
On shows like family guy you ask yourself "why did these two even HAVE kids? and if a recent episode is to be believed it's because Lois wanted to be a mom thinking it would "justify her existence" whatever that means. Only for her to end up hating every aspect of motherhood all those years later.

I still find it surprising just how popular it is. Are we that devoid of well written families on TV these days?
Keep in mind going back to family guy. Lois and peter hate each other so much, It's become a running gag that lois cheats on him and neither of them care. Peter back in one of the older seasons once gave up a million dollars just to be with lois but now? you'd hardly believe they're the same peter. As for other shows? The parents on big mouth are either as insufferably annoying as their kids or are also such hateful people you wonder why they ever got married at all. and beth and jerry smith? I think the rick and morty thread covers why they fail as parents, and a couple.

Bandit and Chili heeler are written to where you don't have to ask yourself, " what did these two even see in each other in the first place?" because They are written like a couple still happily married and giving it their all to raise their kids right. There's a genuine sense of familial love among the Heelers that no other animated show ever had, Not even other small kids shows.

It is a laid back series with little conflict and a wholesome family. If the vids I posted are anything to go by, people are using it as a substitute for their family as Bluey is the way family is “supposed to be.” I compare it to MLP as that was the reasoning for many in that fandom as well. As a side note, I remember some brony ShellyD looked at who spoke about how he was attracted to the ponies because his dad divorced his mom and now he can’t trust family. These shows attract man/woman-children as they function as some idealization of what friends and family are. It becomes more apparent when you look at communities like Animal Crossing.
Kind of like the people who obsess over Nintendo consoles as those where the thing they would play on when there parents where arguing loudly in the next room. So now they buy anything with Nintendo on it.

Netflix continues to drop more balls than male puberty. :heart-empty:
(Gorillaz should count as western animation right? They've had shorts and a Cribs episode on MTV in the past)

If this happened in or up to the Plastic Beach phase, I'd be really disappointed. Now the characters depicted in that image no longer exist.
Okay at one point the red guy (Pistoles?) tells Donald about a Mexican holiday where the kids go from house to house and are consistently told "no shelter," until finally they get to one that offers it. This is apparently meant to replicate the journey of Mary and Joseph.

What I always wondered is this: Is the "shelter" house planned in advance? I would imagine it is, but I also imagine more than once someone has fucked up and accidentally offered these kids shelter, not realizing it was a holiday. Do the kids know in advance which house is the correct one?

That was one case where I felt like Disney skimped on Details. Or maybe they didn't and I just didn't hear or couldn't understand the explanation through the thick accent (my VHS tape isn't in the best condition, either).
If it's meant to replicate the Mexican posadas, then in the short version it's around the third house that the doors are opened for the pilgrims (i.e. Mary and Joseph), after following a set of carols.

A fucking bird is dead on-screen.
What the fuck they're thinking?
The Sesame Street episode talking about death since one of the actors died in that time was much better.
Mr. Rodgers neighborhood will always be top tier in explaining serious things to kids in a comforting and reasonable manner. Never really gonna top that.

Calvin & Hobbes' take on it was classier.

Thank Watterson that he does not commercialize Calvin and Hobbes at all. He knows what the media corporations will do to it just like what it did to Peanuts and Garfield.

I mean, it sucks not seeing a Calvin and Hobbes animated film (or series), but it's definitely for the better. Besides, if Watterson decides to make a Calvin and Hobbes film at all, it would most likely be more about Calvin grown up since he already told what he wants through the comic. I'm glad Watterson is a content person who knows when to end his comic, giving up the strip to paint with his father and staying away from the public eye. When you compare him to spastics like Scott Adams or money-grubs like Jim Davis, it's a blessing.

Speaking of Watterson, he is writing "a fable for grown-ups" called The Mysteries with caricaturist John Kascht set to be released on October 10, 2023.
