Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Now disclaimer this is more speculation (as my prior opinion thank you yamma damma) but if you go back and look at eps of the power puff girls collect her and city of clips ville. (which despite airing in season 5 was still story driven by craig and co) It almost feels like he and to an extent the people who worked for him at the time have contempt for people like us or animation fans in general.

Sure everyone and their mother's made the joke about Lenny Baxter predicted discord mods, but really re-listen to the professor's little speech about "true fandom." it has good intentions behind it, but then you recall the narrator literally telling him to get a life (the pre internet version of touch grass) Then of course there's city of clipsville. Which despite being hated by fans Craig has all but admitted the episode was made because he and the crew hated all the ridiculous content fans made and posted on the web. (in 2003 and that's assuming they were talking about the tamer aspects)

Again I could just be seeing things that aren't there, leaping at shadows and all that jazz. Or it's just old age cynicism talking. But as a certain little fanboy once said, "I learned an important lesson, you can't count on anyone especially your heroes."
So Craig is based, what about it?

I honestly don’t think he was implying that. Craig seems to be going after the hyper fans. Lenny is practically the definition of the modern day consoomer. He hardly seems to actually understand what he is a fan of hence why he stopped them from being Supers. The Professor’s speech was about being a true fan, someone who understands a work and just enjoys it, not someone who makes it their life. Lenny’s modern day equivalents are those people who buy all the Star Wars or Marvel Funkos, simp for every film regardless of quality, and make a brand their identity. They don’t like the brand, they are just using it as a crutch to give life meaning.

Clipsville dealt with the other type of fans, which is the fanfic/shipping losers. The people who spend their lives writing about fictional characters needing to fuck, or creating Pooh’s Adventure tier stories.

The team seemed to be shitting on the people we shit on. I don’t see a problem with his take personally.

Actual good storytelling is something even Hollywood is afraid of doing and is more focused on money making by chasing the Marvel/DC/Star Wars/Star Trek crowd and reviving IPs from the grave with fanbrats defending said products.

I'll bet good money that a majority is for the sake of realism. Like they expect people wouldn't be interested in their show if it didn't have some kind of dysfunctional family dynamic in them that wouldn't be "relatable" enough to people.

That being said, it's not to say there isn't good families in shows that come to mind. Gumball, Phineas & Ferb (especially with Doof trying to be a good father), Clarence (Though your mileage may vary if you consider a divorced mom with a Boyfriend a "good" family) and if we're talking older shows, then shows like Dexter, PPG, Chowder also come to mind when it comes to "good" family dynamics. They probably aren't up there in terms of what a "wholesome" family may look like compared to Bluey, but they certainly aren't Family Guy levels of dysfunctional.
Gumball? Really? That family is a bunch of pathological sociopaths.

I’m shocked that there was going to be a Gorillaz animated movie in the first place. They have come a long way from doing things like this almost a couple of decades ago:

They were also working on a Gorillaz movie back in the early 2000s with Dreamworks called Celebrity Harvest. One of the plots was going to be about celebrities turning into zombies, hence the name. Dreamworks wanted Gorillaz to be more "family friendly" and felt the theme was too dark, which Jamie Hewlett said fuck that and scrapped it. A lot of the art and concepts ended up being reused for the Demon Days album. (The music video for Rockit was inspired by the movie's plot for example.) Poor Jamie can't catch a break with his movie adaptations.

To think there was a time, who feels like it was just yesterday, where Hollywood have the guts to do a good storytelling...

Hollywood studios (and other big name studios) have become smarter and smarter as they've focused more on banking on old IPs that were long dead in world where people have nostalgia, only for them to get worse and worse.

Netflix continues to drop more balls than male puberty. :heart-empty:
(Gorillaz should count as western animation right? They've had shorts and a Cribs episode on MTV in the past)

This is honestly such a shame, Jamie Hewlett whose work I adore has been attempting to make a Gorillaz movie now since 2005, honestly your far from stupid for liking Gorillaz they are still an exceptional band. How many creative projects are going to be killed by Netflix is a terrifying thing to contemplate, their reign of terror needs to be stopped.

It's the industry. They will announce something of what could have happen, but either we get no news nor updates or we'll get a news that it's cancelled for reasons. A good example would be a Sims movie. It sounds awful at first, but a plot synopsis actually sounds like it has potential. That was announced back in 2007, but was cancelled by the early 2010s.

I guessing GDT is going to be in his stop-motion phase now.

It's as smart as owning a forest and cutting every last tree to sell - The short term gain is massive but the drop will be gradual and hard unless you have another cycle of talented individuals making new shit to exploit, which is virtually null in such anti meritocratic business.

Though one can argue it's a symptom of the modern economy, the people exploiting the system will be long gone by the time everything goes crumbling down, and the speculators would just jump ship. Any social consequences can be damned, even if it will bite everyone in the ass later.

Who's stop motion is better? His or Wes Anderson's?\
I just watched ENA for the first time and it was so wonderful, that I ended up being visibly confused as to what I just watched. Has this happened to anyone else?
I never really liked ENA that much. Sure the animation and music are really good but the dialogue gives me a headache. I think LSD dream emulator does a better job at surrealism.

I think JoelG's other series, Hands Up, is better, even if it's more simplistic.

Oh I didn't know about that. Thanks
I also forgot to mention that you can currently (as of this post) watch the UPN Dilbert show for free on YouTube and Tubi.
It definitely was a great show that woefully aired on an already dead network, which is really strange considering UPN also had some great shows (I could literally go on about Smack Down and both Star Treks DS9 and Enterprise for a while), and even its adult animation lineup is impressive (this show, Gary & Mike, Game Over and even at that time Home Movies before it was cancelled by the network due to extremely poor results only for Adult Swim to rescue it for newer episodes for a span of three years).
