All I know is that hopefully the next era of animators won't be cut from the ToonBoom cloth and perhaps give a style that has never really been seen before. I know it is very optimistic, but perhaps someone will come along with an awesome black and white animated show.

Just don't look to TV to do it. Because they won't. Not unless some serious asskickings across the board take place, anyway.

I would so love a black & white show!

We can always hope!

While this was posted earlier this month, I've just come across this snipped from Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors:

Is this really the best a disney-funded Marvel can do? I mean, I guess it's neat how Kamala's jaws move with her mouth, but I don't think it compensates for the choppy animation, muted colors and weightless line work. I'm sure people will eat up Kamala being all Kawaii-uguu-pseudo-anime-waifu though.

:late: but never really liked recent Marvel Animation as much as I tried too. The writing quality made it seem like I was watching a episode-long PG Family Guy cutaway gag. At least Ultimate Spiderman was trying to be similar to Brave and the Bold and had some sort of a soul, these shows just seem like a nasty cash grab based on name recognition.

Also the newer Marvel show art styles seem to coincidentally look a lot like the DC animated stuff released alongside it, but that’s just me.

That's such a good comparison, especially Hulk: Agents of SMASH feels like a bad Seth McFarlane skit. These new shows also look so bland even compared to their '80s counterparts, what with their bland colors, unimaginative fight scenes, lackluster animation and by-the-numbers screen play. I'm surprised kids can sit through them without being bored.

What might have worked for Batman Brave and the Bold or the criminally mistreated Justice League Action is NOT working for Marvel. And it never did, honestly.

I didn't watch those 2 too much, but what I saw was good, compared to WTF Marvel is wasting away on right now that isn't Big Hero 6: TAS, if you ask me (you didn't, but I don't give a fuck.).

"Hey Lois, remember that one time we pissed Thor off so badly in front of the entire Galactic Council he declared war on all of Quohag?"

I have to admit, I've only seen a few episodes of Avengers Assemble and the Guardians of the Galaxy cartoon but from what I've seen, it's not that good. It's like they watched the DCAU Justice League Unlimited, and then said "Hey, our characters are just like theirs!" and made the characters blander than cardboard. It was even funnier when they got the Justice League knockoffs- I mean, Squadron Supreme on the show because you know they would've used the League in a heartbeat instead if they got the rights.

Like you said too, the fight scenes were so fucking boring and skippable. There's no risk or gamble because you know the heroes win every time! I can't really write it out, so just compare this:
to this:
Keep in mind that's their Wonder Woman knockoff, and she still fucking loses to an inexperienced chick with Hal Jordan's powers!

EDIT: Formatting.

Yeah, I used to regard Brave and The Bold and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes as decent, fun little toons, but compared to what Marvel's producing now they seem like masterpieces in animation.

What I dislike the most about Avengers: Assemble from a visual standpoint is that with some shading, liveler colors and actual line weighting it could lool really good. I hate how on the thumbnail the lines of Zarda's deltoids leading into her arm just stop abruptly instead of gradually becoming thinner at the end, it really makes the otherwise fine drawings look cheap and undefinded. Even then, there's still the uninspired fight choreography and stiff animation with impactless punches that utterly fail to convey the the two characters' superhuman strength and that stupid shakeycam effect. By comparison, the Wonder Woman clip you've provided looks so much more expressive and organic, even though I'm pretty sure it was also done digitally.

That’s just what infuriates me about Marvel animation. It has the potential and the budget from all the Disney cum Marvel gets to be good, but they’ve just hired a bunch of shitty writers and producers to shit out three shows at a time that are of subpar quality just so they can make bank off of merchandising. They literally make so much fucking money that it could go to hiring qualified writers and producers.

Marvel, take notes on what makes movies like Superman and Batman: Apocolypse or Death of Superman so good or get some of the MCU writers on board or even the DCAU animation team to straighten out your story. Hell, hire Joaquim dos Santos for one of your season finales to choreograph and you’ll be golden. Imagine getting a fight scene with the Avengers or Spiderman that’s choreographed by the same guy who does the DC movies. You’ll give the DCAU a run for their money and loosen their grip on the medium they’ve succeeded in over and over again.

Sorry for all the replies on this, this just infuriates me LOL.

No. Your rage is justified. Marvel used to be just as good as DC still actually is at this, despite some questionable and easy to bash due to being oversaturated techniques in some cases.

As far as I know, the MCU is the only thing Disney is directly funding. The animation department and Disney's own animation department are treated as separate even though the Mouse owns both studios.

So without hyperbole or aggressive hate, could someone give me their honest opinion about if Steven Universe is a good show or not. I ask because I hear mixed things about it and hear that it has rather fucked undertones with so many of the relationships being abusive. Is this true?

How about you watch it for yourself and come to your own conclusion - it's better than listening to us. Besides, whatever crap I spew about said show is just me being personally disappointed in it - but again, THAT is MY honest opinion of said show and nothing else.

Unsure whether to post it here or the Cartoonsgate forum, but since Cartoonsgate is from cartoon spergs who aren't actually involved in the animation industry, I'll just put it here.

Recently there's a flak about a certain head of a department because he doesn't think animation students should study a Manga and Anime course.

Of course, the animation industry got riled up about this.

Honestly, I kind of think the prejudice against anime in the art world needs to go away, but so long as art teachers get bad anime-style drawings that just baldly imitate the style, that prejudice is going to stay.

Doesn't help that Western Animation, especially TV animation, has often ignored the 12 principles too.

If anything, it'd be easier to be prejudiced to all forms of animation like the usual Hollywood mindset than just singling out one country. Hell, I could be just as prejudiced against Australia or Russia's animation indursty as this guy is toward Japan's. Not to mention, Canada's got a shitty reputation for doing almost the exact same things as Japan.

I kind of understand where he comes from. Imagine you get a lot of shitty anime-style art from people who want to take your class.

I mean, I get it too. But him being this bias without realizing the follies of other countries when it comes to animation is a bit blind if you ask me.
