2009 or so. I had an internet friend who was probably the biggest attention-seeking sperg I had ever seen. Now, I had already gone through high school, in which for some reason my entire friend group claimed to be bisexual for obvious attention points. So I was well aware of people claiming these things for attention and was already skeptical.
Anyway, the internet friend suddenly started posting all about how she was totally a guy and every one of her posts was about her gender and "lol my friend's mom looked so confused when I asked where the boy's bathroom was! tee hee!" And it was annoying, very obvious attention seeking. I ended up privately messaging her after we had an argument and unloading on her about how this was all a narcissistic grab for attention. I apologized later but she would often bring this up to humiliate me later. I think she's still around and is still trans but she's also a very hard-left Koolaid drinker with BPD.
My roommate at the time was a leftoid lesbian and when I complained to her about this internet friend, she was clearly annoyed with me, saying I was being transphobic - though I don't think she used that word. My roommate ended up trooning out after college lol. But I was vaguely aware of the existence of gender dysphoria and why some people would need to transition and was somewhat sympathetic. But the whole "you must use my pronouns and think of me as the gender I claim to be" really unnerved me. I don't want to deny reality, thanks.
As a fun aside, I remember thinking back then, "Well at least they're not trying to do stupid things like put trans women in women's sports! At least people are smart enough to know that!"

Anyway, I was and am still part of the Livejournal (now Dreamwidth) roleplaying community, so at the time everyone was mostly posting gay pride shit and very obviously like "if you even slightly show right wing tendencies I will ban you." I only started to see some people claim they/them pronouns at the time but I just thought it was silly.
Nowadays literally every other person in this community is some flavor of genderspecial and likes to play their canonically cis characters as trans because "uwu there's nothing in their canon that says they aren't trans!!!!" For instance, I saw a "transman intersex cafab formerly pregnant" Grand Moff Tarkin floating around somewhere. I just want to do my geeky roleplay hobbies without this troonery. Fine, put dumb labels on yourself but stop infesting our characters with it. I roleplay to escape this shit!
