I don't think there's a bad story in Night Shift. Battleground is delightfully weird, and Quitters Inc. is still one of the best bits of satire he ever produced.
Weakest one is undoubtedly Night Surf. It's just too short and doesn't really feel complete. Like a really really really short supplemental story for The Stand.

It's definitely overshadowed by The Stand, to the point it's hard to judge on its own merits. I do like the desolate feel of it, and the inevitability of there being no real immunity to this version of Captain Trips leaves a memorable impression.

"Every liberal in the country must watch Fox News for one year, and every conservative in the country must watch MSNBC for one year."
This, in a nutshell, is everything wrong with this way of thinking and with mainstream politics in the US:
  1. There are only two options.
  2. Most people are herded into either option because of MSM and the two party system.
  3. MSM on TV appeals to the lowest common denominator.
  4. A Boomer like Stephen King watches TV and has his perception of reality molded by it.
  5. Both parties are part of the establishment at the end of the day, and either station can whip the herd into a frenzy over things like covid, Ukraine, etc.
Also so many bogeymen of the American left in that rant, he thinks he's so intelligent when he doesn't realize the GOP has been controlled opposition for decades. "I don't know anything about firearms, but I'll dance around saying I want them all banned". Things like this make me hate I ever got into his books as a teen. I cannot stand anything he writes now, and I won't waste money on people who hate me and every value which is important to me as a person.

I don't hate that Young Mola was lured into being a Stephen King fan, but I do feel a bit hoodwinked when I look back in my own dotage and see that, regardless of how much he might have declined, his seething hatred of small town America, most veterans, and religious folk was always there. Sometimes done deftly, usually done clumsily, but present so often.

I'll take your word for it. But I'm betting there are better books to read in your lifetime
There are also better ways to spend my time than posting here, but if everyone thought like that then this site wouldn't exist.

I wouldn't let it bother you overmuch. Nothing gold can stay. However I would agree that he has fallen off hard. The Outsider (2018) is trash, but Revival (2011) is really good.

Regardless, I'm done period. There were clues there I should have paid attention to in the books of his I've read and quit a long time ago, but didn't. I've read the summary of Revival's plot on Wikipedia and feel like the whole thing is King taking a potshot at Christianity again reading that.

Not exactly but I can see why you'd think that. Carrie handles the subject very poorly and there are many examples throughout his books, but Revival is a very impressive standout. Reverend Jacobs can throw off the mantle of the church but he can't discard the two basic tenets of Jesus' teachings - charity and mercy.
(until later in the book but you know)

I have not, but I'm looking for something to read so in the cart it goes.
Good shit. You will very much not regret it. Keep in mind it's a bit of a slow burn with some strange jargon at first, but when it picks up the main story you are swept along so hard you don't even notice when it happens.

I'm no stranger to slow burns; Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is one of my all time favorites, and in my opinion the footnotes were one of the best parts.

I always wondered if Quitters, Inc. was connected to the bat-people things from The Ten O'Clock People.

Probably not. The 10 o'clock people were trying to quit and thus smoking just enough to see the bat people.

Quitters inc made you quit cold turkey and never start smoking again... Or else. There wouldn't be a point you could see the bat people.
