Black bears are the most common bears in North America. The range of polar bears is pretty limited and sparsely populated, while black bears have a wide range that includes some fairly populated areas.

That said, you're still more likely to be killed by a bee or lightning than a bear of any kind. And of course you're more likely to be killed by a man than any other animal.

The scenario I've heard is "if you were alone at night which would you rather encounter", and if I saw a guy in the middle of the woods and he wasn't hunting he could be a killer, meanwhile if I stumbled into a black bear, the bear would be a little startled and run away. Because of that, and many other considerations besides, men-hating women need to understand that just as SOME men are the danger, most are the safety and security, and that is what is so insidious about this question. Ideally a woman is not out alone in the forest but is with a husband, or a brother or her father.

So much of this depends on context. I believe some bears are more apt to attack humans than others but I don't think any are habitual man killers. The question concerning a man in the woods depends so much on the variables, including race, region and location, high trust or low trust society. Homogenous, socalled "patriarchal" societies have adjusted the variables to such a degree the prospect of a man in the forrest is much more benign. The closer Europe and the West make a beeline to civilizational ruin...the more dangerous that prospect becomes. The extreme end of that is something out of Mad Max or even The Road.
