Xbox Game Studios Stupidity Hate Thread Game Pass Edition

I still do not understand Microsoft's Xbox business strategy.
They don't have one and they haven't had one since the 360. Everything after that has been them flailing around, soullessly chasing trends and then discarding those trends when they get tired of chasing them. The latest example of this has been Game Pass + buying out as many companies as possible and it seems that's blowing up in their face now too.

Oh and surprise surprise, it sounds like Perfect Dark is in a disaster state as well. I'll be surprised if it even releases.

Xbox big issue is how mismanaged everything is. Not devs fault the state the forza, halo or gears is it but the management and team leaders.

Not shocking about Prefect Dark, if I had to guess, what is causing the issue is them trying to pivot to a GAAS model or what everything new trend management wants in the middle of development, leading to working having to be redone.

Microsoft hadn't shuttered any studios in a hot minute, so here's some new ones!

There's no fucking reason why anyone should celebrate any studio being bought out by Microsoft. Hi-Fi Rush was a nice refreshing creative passion project amongst a sea of nothing but live service hero looter shooter slop, and of course, because we can't have anything nice in the western gaming scene, Tango gets put on the chopping block the minute shareholders start whining that they're not making Call of Duty money.

I fully expect them to gut iD, Ninja Theory and Obsidian within the next two years. I would not put it past them. Rare is one of the "lucky" few who got to survive purely because they struck live service gold with Sea of Thieves after skimping along making shitty Kinect games for a decade.

Speaking of Xbox management failures, they literally stopped paying money for localization, using cheap AI translations without any QA checks or bug fixing. While this could be an attractive solution for the future (also to get rid of pozzed translators) the tech is just not really there yet, at least the one MS is using.

Hate linking to RetardEra but this thread has a lot of good examples how shockingly bad their translations are: https://www.resetera.com/threads/let’s-talk-about-xbox’s-ui-translations-around-the-world-what’s-going-wrong.779777/
Xbox is a joke.

edit: Reading this thread, people seem to think consoles are dying. As a PC bro I would not mind too much but isn't this a bit early? Switch and PS5 have sold shitloads.

PS5 sales have been sluggish and not meeting Sony's forecasts, which is particularly bad considering how little competition they have on the Xbox side of things. Sales of marquee titles (where so much money is traditionally made) have also been poor relative to that install base. So fewer consoles sold and fewer game sales to those consoles, despite games being more costly to develop than ever.

It doesn't mean consoles are necessarily dying, but they're definitely in a more precarious situation than I've ever seen. There's a reason Microsoft keeps talking about Xbox being a "platform" rather than a console and Sony is porting their whole back catalogue of exclusives to PC and it ain't because business is booming and the future looks bright.

Perfect Dark itself is one of these games where it's like "Who the fuck is asking for this?"

I mean, I know people were asking for it 10 years ago. I was asking for it 10 years ago.

There comes a point where you ignore a franchise so much it's dead. It's the same deal with Syphon Filter and a bunch of old Sony IPs. Once you ignore something for like 15 years, put a fork in it it's fucking done. You may as well just make a new IP and hope for the best.

Perfect Dark has been announced for like 5 years now and they aren't even sure if it should be a FPS or not? God Damn Microsoft get your fucking studios in line fuck what FaggotEra says about interference.

I wonder if there's some kind of money laundering or weird shit behind the scenes. The director was the head of Crystal Dynamics, once he got hired by Microsoft and started working on this Perfect Dark game, he asked Microsoft if he could get another studio to help them and they hired Crystal Dynamics.
Do they really need 2 studios to make a singleplayer game?!
To be honest, I knew it would be a pile of shit the second they showed the trailer with the voice over bringing up Climate Change™.

How relevant is Perfect Dark? AFAIK, Perfect Dark was a spiritual successor to the critically/commercially acclaimed Goldeneye 007 during the N64 days. Even without accounting for the MS buyout, Perfect Dark was just one of many multiplayer titles for the system. What place would Perfect Dark have now with Call of Duty and the declining battle royale genre? I feel Perfect Dark will just be used as brand recognization for the next CoD bundle.

Microsoft and Sony are fucked as long as they keep chasing cutting edge graphics. It's bad enough that their boxes are trying to be PC, but to chase the best graphics is fucking mental. It doesn't work. It won't work for consoles. Focus on affordable power and make some fucking games.

They're both fucked.

Perfect Darks isn't relevant. Even 10 years ago, it was only relevant in the sense of "They re-released it on Arcade a few years ago and it'd be nice for Microsoft do do something with one of their IPs"

At this point, yeah, they'd be better off just using it for CoD/Fortnite skins.

Microsoft sat on the IP so long that we have now officially surpassed the "future" timeline of Perfect Dark by a whole year.

They could have played it safe and create a smaller project like Ion Fury to please the 10 remaining fans of PD. But no, every game nowadays has to be a massive, multi-studio AAA live service or online multiplayer.

Why couldn't they get RARE to develop or provide creative input on the game? You know, their own IP?

Let's appreciate the irony that Perfect Dark Zero takes place in the year 2020 where corporations rule the world. There's a literal Samsung logo upon entering the title screen. Four years later... well...

What's the point? There is (probably) nobody in Rare who worked on Perfect Dark or even Perfect Dark Zero at this point.

It's why I say if you ignore an IP for so long, it might as well be dead. There's nobody left who even worked on the IP, so is it even really the IP outside of the name?

It's just as sad charade of something that was greater at that point, and it's why revivals almost never work.

I don't know why it isn't standard industry practice that new IP's start off as smaller projects before they get big hundred million dollar AAA treatment.
I mean, if you're not going to do *any* market research the least you could do is that.

DOOM is an expection. Of course, they understood what made DOOM the juggernaut it was during its heyday for a modern audience. Again, the gaming industry has changed drastically since then. The Initiative was even considering making Perfect Dark an episodic game, I assume like Hitman. All of this sounds like forced engagement.

fuck what FaggotEra says about interference.
The current state of Xbox has really shown that, on some level, you do need a tyrant bearing down on devs (especially Western modern ones) to demand they get their shit together. Otherwise you wind up with absolute retards pissing away five years trying to figure out if you should shoot bad guys from over the shoulder or first person.
