Xbox Thread (Like/Hate) - Mainly focusing on the lackluster exclusives, weak points, or strong points of Xbox consoles

So basically we are going to probably be seeing a lot of cross generational shit again in 5 years?
Considering how it's extended the life of the One series, allowing my One X to still keep pace even now, it makes sense as it keeps you in the ecosystem, paying for Live and games. Literally just bought Persona 5 Royal, a brand new port for the Xbox, and because they updated the hardware halfway in, I'm still giving them money while having a console with plenty of life left.

The difference is Microsoft and the Xbox brand were upfront about this being the goal, where as Sony and the Playstation brand actively mocked it only...to do the exact same shit after they convinced their retard consoomer base to pay scalper prices for their useless box.

Part of the reason I'm fine with Xbox doing it. They're honest, and in the end, I get something up to date that can then carry me through while I save up for the next gen. The One X has held up surprisingly well, outpacing the Series S in some aspects. I'm going to be having fun with Persona 5 and it's glass smooth frame rate well before I upgrade, because they were clear with what they wanted to do in making a family of comsoles.

I don't think there's a bigger example of squandered potential than the Xbox. Playstation and Nintendo has now had two poor performing consoles each, yet Xbox has still somehow managed to end up in last place for evvery generation. It was already obvious by the end of the 360 lifecycle that Microsoft had ditched all support for the console for its last two years to focus on the Xhox One, perhaps the worst name for a console ever, and they still had a shitty launch. And now Microsoft owns half the western studios that exist, and yet production has slowed to a crawl. Half the titles they announce for E3 become vaporware, and all their big franchises have suffered the same fate as modern Star Wars.
Where's the fucking games Phil?! Did you eat them? Is that why you get fatter every year?

As an oldfag, the biggest issue with the X-Box series is how bland it is. It doesn't have the exclusives Sony and Nintendo had, it doesn't have that much of a better graphical fidelity as a PC in any generation, it doesn't have its own niche (where Nintendo had all ages stuff and Sony had RPGs), it doesn't even have good drama around it. It's simply soulless.
It doesn't help the second generation it had was the last generation before the line between PCs and consoles blurred completely and the gaming industry collectively reached zombie status.

Some people still try to make a Sony versus MS rivalry but in this point in time it's just sad, none of them deserve any customer royalty and are just gay corporations (and Nintendo in some ways is even worse).

The 360 is such a strange console because at the very start of the generation Microsoft went all in on timed exclusives and was truly head and shoulders above the PS3 but around the tail end of the console they just took their foot off the gas and tried to force the Kinnect into working instead of simply continuing to pay for more timed exclusives.

I hate to be a fanboy here but Microsoft could have very easily turned a generation into Xbox fans had they not fucked up the tail end of the 360 and made sure the Xbox One was backward compatible. The Xbox One ended up being good around the tail end of its lifetime but that's only because of the U-Turn on Backwards Compatibility after getting fucked by the PS4.

Both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X fucking suck and neither have a killer game to justify them years later.

Is the Series S getting a permanent price reduction to 250?

Because I remember Gamestop having that as the price during the holidays, but I just looked on the website and it's still listed at 250...

It also didn't help that they started actively comm banning users for swearing in messages between friends to where people just stopped using xbox live all together. Microsoft and their automated "enforcement team" single handedly killed xbox live. The "xbox one" is more like the "xbox 1984." How the hell is it still around? There are no games for it.

Sure, I’ll shill Microsoft for a bit. I can appreciate that they saw the direction game development was going and decided to go all-in on turning Xbox into a line of gaming PCs. Just like with a PC, older Xboxes (Xbox Ones) can still play newer games as long as they’re not too intensive, and newer Xboxes can play older games at higher specs, made even better by a strong focus on backwards compatibility. The system itself is also much more user-friendly than Switch and PS4/5, and it just feels comfortable to use in general. There’s support for emulators without needing to mod the system, even without dev mode, so you can run RetroArch and emulate most systems up to Wii. And if you’re a PC gamer, you can sync the controller to both Xbox and PC and quickly swap between them by double tapping the sync button.

As for what I don’t like? Microsoft puts all their games on PC, so Xbox will probably never get a major exclusive again, made worse by the Steam Deck making PC gaming more accessible. Japanese third party support is questionable (why the hell is Megaman Battle Network Legacy Collection not coming to Xbox?). The standard controller is great, but if you want a wireless controller that’s dpad-centric like PS, tough shit.

Overall, I think the Series S/X is great, but also not for everyone, namely people who are already comfortable with handling a gaming PC and don’t care about 360 backwards compatibility.

Because gaming going mainstream, console similarity and the rise of cross play has effectively killed the console wars for everyone except the most hardcore of losers.

Only fanboys care about exclusives. Normies just care about playing GTA Online, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Minecraft, Ubisoft slop and others, and now that they don't even need to own the same system it's even better for them.

usage of AA batteries
That's a plus, I don't need to pay sketchy shops to replace a custom battery years after the console stopped production.
The Xbox series S is closer to a PS4 pro than a next generation console.
Yes, it only has 20 CUs, it's slower than a One X. It also single-handedly allows the Steam Deck to be a viable handheld. I like it.

The Xbox sucks because it's just a PC, it's literally running Windows and games use D3D12. Sure it's cheaper, but it's a better "investment" to save up and buy a competent PC if you're really into gaming.

Nintendo is the only company left making dedicated gaming hardware.

I have no “brand loyalty” honestly. If I see a cool PS5 game, I’ll get a PS5 to play some Sony exclusives. Same with XBOX or Nintendo. If I see a game I wanna play I’ll get the console to play the exclusives of each console.

Nintendo’s exclusives are still the best but considering Nintendo’s autistic feud with its own fan base I’m starting to question the Big N’s practices a lot now

There is a lot of questionable stuff but I don't think Nintendo has been doing too much fighting with Nintendo autists recently, it's mostly the autists hitting themselves and blaming Nintendo.

I don't like how the 360 would scratch your games from the slightest bump. MS couldn't be arsed to add bumpers onto the disc tray mechanism.

My thoughts on all the Xboxes:

Original Xbox: Good system. Good library, especially if you like early 2000s PC games and didn't have a good computer at the time. This was more important at the time than it is now, considering most computers were total shitboxes and ones that weren't cost a small fortune, and would be obsolete within a couple of years anyway. Obsolete not as in "oh boo hoo I can't run this on ultra settings", obsolete as in "this game will not start at all". Original Xbox also had a built-in hard drive, so, no memory cards necessary, plus you could rip music CDs straight to the hard drive. Later on, you could hack it and install emulators straight to the hard drive, which was fantastic considering it was one of the first home game consoles that let you play SNES roms on a TV. (Dreamcast had DreamSNES, but couldn't run at full speed)

Xbox 360: Good first half, bad second half. The good first half was tainted by countless consoles failing due to bad solder, and the existence of that one model of console with no onboard storage, meaning games had to be designed to work without a hard drive to cache to. Still, it had exclusives, and most games of the generation got their best versions on 360. But the release of Metro UI, as well as controllers that would just die (at least, for me) meant that it's a terrible console to revisit. Thankfully, a good chunk of the library runs on Xbox One.

Xbox One: The horrific launch just doomed that whole console forever. It'll forever be seen as a joke, and rightfully so. Even the name is stupid. Xbone? And much later on, they announced the "Xbox One S: All Digital Edition", aka the "Xbox One SAD". Still, it ended up a fine console. No better than the PS4, of course, but if it's all you have, you'll still have plenty to play. One of the only exclusives on the entire platform was Rare Replay, the best game compilation ever, with 30 games (31 after Goldeneye) that go up through Xbox 360. The controller was heavily improved, giving us an excellent D-pad, too. It didn't end up a bad console, but you don't really need one if you have a gaming PC or a PS4.

Xbox Series X|S: Quite possibly the least exciting console launch ever. The UI is exactly the same as the Xbox One's current UI. Games native to Series are listed as "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S". Almost everything for it also works on Xbox One, though, it does play Xbox One games smooth as butter. It's a fine console, there's just not a lot to say about it. There are no exclusives, due to everything launching on at least Windows Store. The new controller is a slightly revised Xbox One controller, and is very good.

The whole Xbox ecosystem right now is straightforward and unexciting. Their controllers are king when it comes to PC, but Windows Store (which for all intents and purposes is part of Xbox) is one of the worse ways to play PC games. It's not EGS bad, but it has its own special way of installing games in obtuse ways that make doing anything with them a major hassle. Even basic things like launching your game through Steam might not be possible, and even workaround software like UWPHook are temperamental. Here's an example of why all that sucks: Taiko no Tatsujin: The Drum Master is an Xbox & Windows Store exclusive, meaning it has a PC release, but it really is exclusive to Windows Store. It's not on Steam or anything else. Since it's from Windows Store, it installs in its special Universal Windows Platform way that keeps it from launching through Steam, and it doesn't support my USB Taiko drum controller natively. There is no Xbox-branded drum, and you can't remap the inputs on the Switch one in a way that works. Thanks, Universal Windows Platform™.

This is true, but your average player is too fucking stupid to understand this.

Everyone I know who wants a PS5 admits that PC is better, but then say "But I'm not willing to pay 5 grand for a PC"

The vast vast majority of people who actually play games are fucking retarded and still think it costs 5 grand for a decent PC, or are too scared and/or stupid to attempt to build their own.

The only Xbox I ever had was the first one, and it was the most disappointing non-joke console I've ever owned. 99% of games were either slightly prettier PS2 games or borderline unplayable ports of PC games. About the only games available for it that didn't make me think, "I should have bought a PS2," were Splinter Cell and Project Gotham Racing 2.

360 seemed nice, but had a problem with atrocious build quality. Some games were a bit prettier than the PS3, but it wasn't different enough for me to care, not with awesome PS3 games like Gran Turismo 5 coming...wait a minute. Okay, Gran Turismo 6. Wait, again? You fucked it up twice, Sony?

Xbox One was basically the exact same console as the PS4 with the exact same games, all of which were also on PC. By that point, I had enough money to buy a gaming PC, but I still played Battlefield 4 on console due to the much larger player base and was planning to play COD, but then Activision decided that COD games should stop being fun and have retarded jump-packs and day-glo costumes instead. When MW2019 came out and was both pretty good and cross-platform capable, I shelved my PS4 and completely lost interest in game consoles forever.

There's nothing you can say about Xbox Series X (what the fuck is wrong with this product's brand managers?) that isn't everything you can say about the Xbox One, just a few years later. Console exclusives are dead, so an Xbox is at this point nothing more than a closed-ecosystem gaming PC that punches a bit above its price tag. The online multiplayer isn't even what it used to be, since everything is moderated, and so few games have persistent match-making any more. Discord is legit a better way to meet people to game with than Xbox Live due to how much Microsoft has neutered the service. For example, you could not find people to party up with for Destiny raids in the console platform itself. You had to go to a PC anyway.
