Saints Row thread

A few things:

1. Why is Eli not ex Marshall? The other 2 Saints members are ex Idols and Panteros, so why not have Eli, who has a business degree, be a former member of the faction that's a legitimate business?

2. The gameplay looks fun and I like the return of classic Saints activities like insurance fraud. They should have used this trailer instead of the other one with the voice actress. It isn't a masterpiece but it's better.

3. This "you're just a start up trying to pay off your student loans!" shit just comes across as a disingenuous cope. The Saints never had to justify their drug dealing or prostitution, but now the Nu-Saints have to come across as "legit" to make them more palatable for a modern audience.

4. Saints Row has never been "relatable" and only got less relatable as the games went on. Saying that Saints Row was known for being relatable completely misses the point of Saints Row.

I'll pick it up in 2023 when it's $15 on Steam.

Julius said that he did it because the boss was taking things too far and was as bad as the other gangs the Saints were made to stop, and Julius was 100% right.
That's not exactly true though.
Yes, the Saints were en route to becoming "Vice Kings that wore purple", but the plot hole that volition created was that in SR1, the playa doesn't ever go rogue or act out in a way that suggests he would try and stage a coup against Julius or become an unruly violent murderer. He was loyal and an obedient yet efficient soldier. Julius had no anecdotal evidence to support the idea that the playa wouldn't put down his flags in SR1. Storywise it makes much more sense for Julius to off Gat instead of the playa, since Gat does have a history of violence and refusing to use a silent/passive method if a more violent solution is available.
And no, Jules' tapes with Troy saying the Playa and Gat would never drop their flags doesn't correct this oversight, since again, there is nothing to sustain his claim.
If anything, it is Julius' actions that sour the Boss to have disregard for everything and everyone except the Saints and take up extreme prejudice as a way of life, a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts.

Edit: @That leak video, no more gangsta poses? The way the protagonist holds her weaponry is so generic, like... unreal workshop generic.
Neenah is the only character who at first glance could be Saints material. I guarantee her story and dialogue will ensure she isn't any such thing, but at least her concept art passed as Saints-like.

If you consider the way the average person plays an open world crime game as part of the story, killing the player made perfect sense because he was a violent psychopath who would spend his time between jobs driving on the sidewalk and firing into crowds for fun. Not really "Vice Kings wearing purple", but still. Maybe Julius was just really perceptive and saw warning signs early.

Welp, another one to the modern society pyre...

The leaked video looks...generic. I wont say its BAD (outside of the plot and...actually there is a lot of bad but I am trying to be fair here) but there is nothing impressive or that hasnt been done better in previous entries in this series.

Its almost like the whole thing was kind of a retcon thanks to a glitched ending cutscene or something...

You know what you made me realise? Saints Row did the ending A of GTA 5 years before it.

Killing the unstable psychopath ending? I dont know, found it too similar all of the sudden (not that Im claiming GTA copied Saints Row, but still...)

The words "contemporary", "relatable", and "student loans" now being associated with Saints Row makes me sad.

The gameplay looks like a slightly improved SR3 (10 years later, it better be), and that game had characters that didn't make me want to shove into the nearest locker, so I think I'll just stick to that. Volition acting the way they did towards criticism makes that decision easier for me.

Pity that the game's destined to be a cringy flop, Rockstar is in desperate need of competition these days.

That leak video just makes everyone look boring. Neenah apparently worked at a car shop yet she's dressed like a major art student she got rejected from a university for. Not even wearing overalls or loose fitting clothing like Audrey did in Atlantis.
They also keep trying to make personalities of the other crew mates and I don't think you need to do that. Johnny was good SR 2 because he didn't stick out that much until Aisha got killed then he got that ruthless streak. You've got all this talent, budget and wanting another SR game and you spend that in the american south like so many others and it's with people who got kicked out of berkeley.
At least Watch Dogs had me not wanting to live in Chicago.

I've been playing 2 as of late in mourning of the franchise. It completely passed my head how good the Ronin plot is. Shogo is such a douchebag, but he actually knows what he's doing. Jyunichi is a capable enforcer trusted by Akuji but is too devoted to his master to see Shogo's competence behind his veneer of douche. If the boss never woke up, he'd have a leg up on the other gangs with his Ultor connections. Akuji taking control of the Ronin is what cements their demise. Shogo dies trying to make daddy love him, which makes Wong hook up with the boss in gratitude; Ultor fucks the Ronin over because they won't play ball, and Akuji's feud with Wong leads him to making the mistake of showing up in person to a place the boss knows he's going to be.

The Samedi plot is probably the weakest, but old Shaundi being a semi-competent fuck up through the whole thing was weirdly endearing. The Brotherhood is still the best one in the entire series, all started because someone wasn't willing to give more than 20%. Storming their apartment complex hideout was fantastic.

I noticed Gat is only present for the beginning, Ultor, and Ronin. Which is depressing considering his chemistry with the boss. It'd have been nice to have him help or show up in the other storylines down for shooting up shit. Carlos' death seems like something he wouldn't take laying down either, even if he didn't know him. He was hardcore motherfuckin' gangsta like that.

and now we have college students trying to run criminal gangs as businesses to pay off their student loans

And that's what the astroturfers and social justice ideologues will never understand; it's not about the color of their skin or their sex, it's about their attitudes and behavior.
They want to trick people into thinking they're the only option if you want to end racism and that the lines have already been definitively drawn. "People who disagree with us are racist because we are the movement fighting for racial justice", or "if you agree that the genders are equal, you are a feminist, because feminism just means equal rights." They also probably believe it themselves.

Words of Wisdom from Jimmy Rebel.
Taking a closer look, this particular segment here was from an interview Johnny Rebel did at some point where he was quoted saying he didn't make the music because of racism but rather for the money and because of people's attitude.
>Trahan insists he didn't set out to spread hate or start trouble. "I don't care about black. Black don't rub off. There's not a black in this country that has to be black. There's not a white that has to be white. They just came here like that. They were born that way, but they didn't develop the damn attitude. Whites didn't develop that attitude. Blacks develop an attitude towards the whites, and they won't let it go. They won't let go of what happened."

maybe im a fucking drunk retard but for the life of me cant understand the she is a mechanic but also studied antropoly dyke driver. what the hell is that character
Who knows, I'm trying to figure out why Eli would dress up like an even dorkier Steve Urkel.

He looks like he would have a PTSD attack upon seeing an open locker, I can't take a character like him seriously.

Ahh yes, we go from 'You are a rando who gets jumped by a thug and brought into the world of gangs', to Badass Gang Boss, to the fucking memelord president to 'BRO MY STUDENT LOANS'.

What a neck-snapping shift in tone and aim, it feels as if they've mistaken SR for Watch_Dogs.

Watch Dogs 2 had the decency to not stoop to featuring student loans though, that's on Volition there.

Dom, who was part of the DSCC, got kicked out and decidedly to leak DSCC footage:

knowing this shit'll get taken down, i've downloaded it
You weren't kidding. The only copy of this video I could find was on some gaming website.

But they took what looked like a decent game and fucked it up with the characters. You have a black nerd, a useless white guy, and an overachieving chick with a liberal arts degree who looks like she's ready to lecture someone about her gender pronouns at any given moment. But the worst was the black chick from the trailer who says "Get away from my friends." Turns out that bitch is you. Hearing that line gave me flashbacks to 4 when your character puts on a puke green thong and you have to push a button sequence as you dance in a titty bar. It's that fucking gay.

It's a shame too. The gameplay looks decent and I could've had some fun building and customizing my own criminal empire. But between this and the trailer, I definitely don't want to touch this pile of digital homosexuality.
