Phil is a dumbass who can't figure out computers, let alone anything else. He prefers consoles because they are plug and play. Understanding settings and switching out parts is too much for Phil, and he tries to hide it by insulting everybody else. Remember when he complained about a minor crack on a minor part of his PC, and then couldn't figure out how to set up stream settings? He can't even figure out how to move his monitors around the room for better comfort. There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying a console if that's how you want to consume your games, and is usually the best way for more casual fans to engage with the medium, or if you just have no interest in PC gaming. In reality, Phil doesn't have a good reason to not own a decent gaming PC. Most of the games he's played have come out on the PC at the same time as their console versions, with most being designed with the console in mind. Pretty much every game, whether AAA or the cheapest of indies will let you play by hooking a controller up (some older ones get kinda scuffed and will only work with specific types of controllers) and letting you play it that way. I wouldn't even give a shit if he just said "I don't like PC gaming and would prefer to play on consoles". The problem is how Phil talks and acts about PC gaming (and by extension streaming) paints the picture.
In his head, for some reason, PC gaming is:
Phil is intimidated by PCs and PC gamers. I think his
- needlessly complicated (see his PC Witcher 2 first boot for a great example of this bitching)
- expensive (granted, expensive to get into, but much cheaper in long term than buying every new console because you can't be assed to learn to replace parts)
- uncomfortable (you have to sit in a chair instead of a couch)
- disingenuous/fake (my personal favourite since he loves ripping on other streamers with PC set ups and how they consume games as fake gamers. A specific recent example is his rage against people with dual monitor set ups and ring lights)
flunking out ofchanging majors when he was in college probably played into him hating PCs, but even if he didn't try for computer science while in school he'd still hate them. He grew up in the 80s-90s and back then, computers were for nerds and Phil IS NOT a nerd. He just wants to be able to plug something in and play it, and not have to deal with those stupid fucking problems that PCs always cause to their stupid fake gamer owners who aren't smarter than him.
He desperately wants to buy the most expensive PCs and know how they work. He wants to be the richest and smartest person so he can show off to everybody else, but he is too broke and stupid to do so.
