Its not spelt that way either by Russians or Ukrainians. After Ukraine seperated from the Soviet Union in the 1990s, a bunch of Academics did a project where they created a newAlso, Kyiv is how it's spelt by Ukrainians. Kiev is the Russified spelling. Normally nobody gives a fuck but seeing as Ukraine is get assraped by Russia right now and NATO ain't doing shit, the international community figured they could at least be "nice" to Ukrainians and use their chosen spelling.
set of rules for translating words into English. The rules they selected led to the English spelling changing to Kyiv. There is no grand historic basis for "Kyiv" and its no more "correct"
than Kiev was. You could spell it ten different ways and all of them would be equally correct.
But changing how words are translated into English is something that nationalists always do as sort of a show of strength. It makes them feel good about themselves for
some reason.
