He must have done it when he decided to update his now gone Streamelements to PayPal, so by taking out Patreon on that day, he saved himself the effort of updating his profile yet again on another day.

This gives credibility to the idea that he just started worrying about people using Patreon instead of PayPal, however, it could just be that he is extremely lazy so he didn't bother until now for lazy unrelated reasons.

Yes, he did. The Pokémon stream started with Monday's $25 "overnight" tip from "Julian".

2nd point not necessarily true. I was working in the aircraft industry in that same time frame and was also laid off. The industry as a whole in that time period was just very very tumultuous economically and the place I was working at laid off everyone that had 5 or less years of experience. To be fair, we don't really know WHY Phil was laid off, but given the situation in that industry at that time, more than likely it was more a financial move, rather than a disciplinary one. If it was because he sucked, I'd imagine they'd have just fired him outright.
