If your depression is deeper though, seeking help may be a very good step. The only thing I would highly recommend is to not take drugs should they tell you to. There are actually loads of different forms of therapy that can help with the root causes of depression if it keeps coming back.

I have heard lots of shitty things about American psychologists and shrinks, but there's bound to be a few that don't instantly want to pharma it up.

Depression medications have only been shown to work in very severe cases. At that point, a patient should also start considering other treatment options (Deep brain stimulation and ECT are available if the patient is resistant to the meds, and I'd say seem to be much more effective in the long run). In moderate and mild depression, placebo pills work just as well. As a (Not Your Healthcare Provider) tip, I'd write down something I want to get done every day, and get it done. That way I get a sense of accomplishment, and the satisfaction that comes with it.

If it's any consolation, psychologists are not medical doctors, and therefore do could not prescribe meds if they wanted to. Psychiatrists are the medical hand of the psych field. Few exceptions, but those are specialized.
