Are videogames for children?

Anyone else getting really tired of how many games store your graphics settings on the cloud? I have a gaming laptop and a desktop, and at this point, I have completely given up on optimizing settings and go with presets, because of course, if I play a game on my laptop, it "conveniently" changes my settings on my desktop to whatever I had on my laptop, and vice-versa.

Are game developers retarded? Why do they think anyone wants this?

I feel ya, but whats even worse is when they do that, but don't keep ingame settings like UI or input settings. I hope they get cancer. Not anything fatal, maybe just a bit o' melonoma. But still, cancer.

So, I've got a game that I've been trying to find information about; it's called Curse of the Sea Rats:

Apparently, it's a "ratroidvania" game where you control one of four anthropomorphic rat people on a pirate-inspired adventure to steal an ancient artifact from a pirate witch. To expand on this:

The game takes place in the late 1700s, off the coast of Ireland. A British ship was transferring a number of prisoners from America to Britain for judgement, when one of the prisoners, a pirate witch known as Flora Burns, used a magical artifact from Japan to turn both her and the entire ship crew into rats. Taking advantage of the chaos, she escaped the ship with both her crew as well as kidnapping the captain's son; with little other option, the captain requested that four other prisoners track Burns down and rescue his son in exchange for clemency. The four protagonists, consisting of American revolutionary David Douglas, Cheyanne Native Buffalo Calf, Former Barbados slave Bussa, and Shogunate spy Akane Yamakawa, taking the artifact that Burns apparently dropped in her escape, set out to defeat her.

From what I've seen and heard, the game is inspired by old animated films, a la Don Bluth, and doesn't exactly take itself the most seriously. The voice acting is... questionable at best, though there is the option to silence it, thankfully. Gameplay-wise, it's noted to be rather difficult, being an attempt at blending Soulslike action with Metroidvania platforming, resulting in a rather difficult and oftentimes unfair gameplay loop; fortunately, the devs have been listening to the community and fixing the game from what I've heard, resulting in a steadily-improving experience overall.

Despite all of this, news on this game is rather low, and it's seems to be rather obscure bit overall. I really haven't seen all that much talk about it since it got released last March; even the furries seem to be rather quiet on the whole thing, which is a bit surprising. From what I've seen on the dev's Twitter, they do support LGBTQ+ month if that means anything, though I'm not quite sure how much it's bled into the actual game itself; said support is rather token in comparison to some other devs that I've seen.

Has anyone here actually played the game? If you have, what're your thoughts on it?

the only retroactive part was counting installations, tied to a revenue goal. your game with 5 million installations didn't make 200k in the last 12 months to trigger the fee? congratulations, absolutely nothing changed. and since that only came into effect 2024 counting forward for new installations, even if you went over 200k all you had to do is sub on the higher tier before that, which bumps both installation and revenue thresholds up to 1 million (exact same as unreal engine), while also reducing the fee. didn't make a million in the last 12 months? congratulations, absolutely nothing changed, besides having to pay for a more expensive subscription (which you could get for the price of your old one for a year).
it also didn't apply to most devs, especially retarded indie devs which do standalone games where sale = installation, but those where the ones throwing the biggest hissy fit.

as for all the kvetching about MUH INSTALLATIONS, unity has been running analytics for years, it's baked into the engine and lot of devs keep it enabled for their own metrics - something they were careful not to mention while shitting themselves over 20 cent once they generate over 200k a year.

regarding revoking licenses, that's the easiest way to get dragged in front of a court, especially in the EU which is always rubbing their hands for another payout. and with the same notion better not use any adobe shit, streaming services or steam (or even gog least they cancel your account and you lose access to your library).
They've literally done this before, in 2019, when they revoked SpatialOS's license to service unity games. They're actively trying to squeeze blood from stones and there's only a matter of time before they do something else equally egregious. The specifics are not relevant, it's the fact they're trying to do this at all.

Worlds Adrift will live on in our hearts...

Darktide is live on XBOX, and my first five games came to an early end due to assholes spamming fire grenades on the team.

Why is friendly fire a thing in these games.

At least it's not crashing or getting stuck in the post game screen. That game had some serious stability issues for the first month or so. Dunno about after that as I quit. I can't remember if ff was on for difficulties below whatever the mid difficulty was called. VT2 had it disabled for anything below champion.

FF does make a lot less sense in DT over VT as everyone is shooting all the time but it's also a staple I guess and the vets would be mad if it got axed. FF is the least of that game's problems imo.

Did they add it back in recently? I remember they had it in the beta/playtest, and then had it out when the game launched. Seems weird that they keep flip-flopping on it. At least in Vermintide it wasn't really a thing until you got on higher difficulties, and most weren't spamming ranged attacks besides.

I'm guessing this is aimed more at people that have a solid group, rather than someone who just wants to blast stuff in a 40k setting?

Think I'm getting old, Darktide is hard lmao
Game has a learning curve but it's not that bad. Premades are definitely going to have an easier time but unless the team comp is something retarded, everything is doable. I remember failing the mission where the finale is moving three cooling rods in a big round room because we had three zealots with flamers and a shield ogryn and none of us could snipe specials. There's a lot stacked against new players in terms of gearing up and determining what isn't absolute trash. The burden of knowledge can be a bit much to players not accustomed to Vermintide systems. The difference between Heresy and Damnation isn't as pronounced as the difference between Legend and Cataclysm in VT2. Damnation isn't as hard as Cata relatively speaking and DT doesn't have modded difficulties either.

What you're really fighting is the jank gameplay mechanics. In this regard, DT is harder than VT as VT's gameplay is solid as a rock. Coherency and toughness chip are fucking stupid. Back when I was on the FS forums I don't remember anyone besides some brown knights being fans of em. The way the weapon reticle climbs but the screen remains centered makes the gunplay feel like it was out of a crappy shooter from 25 years ago, not to mention how melee is a colossal downgrade from the intricate combos of VT.

I know FS just redid the skill trees so I don't have any up to date build insight but I got my first damnation clears using a grug zealot with a mk2 tactical axe

I've only heard really mixed/negative thins about Darktide but that was mostly around launch.
It's 26 bucks on steam right now, is it worth the price if I can get a friend or two to also grab it or would I be better of just sticking with VT?
Have they improved much about the game or is it still a long way off from being passable?

I haven't played since February so I can't really speak for how the game has improved. My problems with the game aren't really with the lack of features or content but rather gameplay fundamentals, although that lack is still super bad. If you really liked VT combat and appreciated the mechanical depth of weapon combos and dodge dancing, then you're probably not going to like DT; none of the weapons save the combat knife feel like VT weapons. I think most of the problems related to gear acquisition/grind and unnecessary weapon stat gating are still there. They're really trying to drive up playtime by making actually playing the game as inconvenient as possible. Immediately after launch, some thankless chud made a little tool that would check the shop rotation every hour from your browser and FS went ballistic. The unified skill trees that they just added was something that others and I suggested during the closed beta almost a year and a half ago.

If you just wanna chop up heretics with the boys, then it's a fine game, but it's probably not gonna keep you as long as VT did. The playercount is peaking right now because of the big update.

Forgot they made DT super grindy in addition to the other stuff I've heard.
I'll probably hold off on it and check again in like a year. Maybe I'll browbeat some friends into picking up VT next time it goes on sale.
Thank you for the informations.

that was spaticalOS fucking with their license, the change was to curb that. of course everyone else had to throw a hissy fit even if they were never affected by it.
ironically everybody forgot how epic got sued twice for outright fuckery, and magically had the idea for fortnite after they worked with bluehole on changes for pubg.

wanting more money happens all the time. especially given how fucking cheap unity was in the past. it's the same shit when adobe or anyone else raises prices, which everyone complains about but continues to use it. and again lot of the ones shat themselves were not affected by it much, if at all.

Just play it on gamepass, crossplay between xbox and steam works now so theres no reason not to, besides Gamepass is a good deal regardless. Im frugal as fuck and gamepass is the only subscription I would shill for. I have a bunch of free 14 day gamepass trials I can send you one if you want it, seems like they give me 5 keys a month.

I played at launch and quit when I hit the cap. I started back with the new update and the talent trees make the game feel alot better, they really have added alot since release last year, but the release was so shit that I would say its a 6/10, 7-8 if you love warhammer.

If you talking about license fuckery after PUBG tried to sue Epic over Fortnight, that's fucked, but at the very least, it's provoked.
Unity decided it wanted to compete with Spatial OS's service offerings and shut them out of the Unity segment entirely. Unity's fuckery was apparently done in the middle of a negotiation.
It's all fucked, just use open source, they literally can't stop you.

from what I remember spatialOS claimed they don't have to pay (as much) since the way they were using it the license didn't apply. it was all about streaming shit so tbh everyone looked equally retarded, including the people commenting on it.

open source is the way to go, but not always an option.

My mistake. I looked back at some old projects and none of the OpenGL libraries I was using had any immediate red flags - FTGL & GLUT. No ticking time bombs there.

I was thinking of Vulkan, where all the official Khronos repositories have a CoC, a main branch, mask-clad avatars, you name it. The old tech is still the best.

Magnum looks very interesting! I'm happy to see that it has a compatibility floor of C++11. Thank you for the suggestion.
Since you mentioned GLUT have you looked at SDL? It's pretty nice(unless it's gotten bad).
