nah, it was the opposite, he stopped giving a fuck about gaming in the early days of the N64 until he met Bootsy and Mike in college. They mentioned a few times how they would pull all-nighters playing Bootsy's GameCube and Mike would lend Atari and NES games to James.

Both statements are right, in line with was he has said on interviews and the biography.

James was pretty much committed to his career as a "filmmaker" and dropped the gaming hobby early on. The first couple of AVGN episodes were meant as a bit of a in-joke with Mike and Bootsy.

Mike Matei was the one that uploaded videos and pushed him to go on youtube and keep doing them, which in turn led to the Screwattack and Gametrailers deal that ended up turning it into a job. I guess on some level he will always resent the fact that he can't stop working on the AVGN mines.

So, Rex Viper is doing a show in Portland Oregon. Rex is interesting because it sits in this uncanny middle ground between middle school garage band and midlife crisis. If this was my 7th grade son, this would be amazing, but as someone who's routinely dealt with musicians, it really does just suck. No love show is ever as good as the CD, so it's important to nail the energy and hit it out of the park to make up for it. If everyone is fucking dancing and singing and movin, then this white boy did alright, but it's really bad in that every video I've seen they have no stage presence. That's the most important thing during a live show.
Here's an exercise. Watch any rex Viper show, but turn the audio off and just watch what they do. Minimal energy, no attempts to hype up the crowd, nothing. If you're just gonna play the music and nothing else, You're wasting everyone's time, we can just listen to the CD.
My god, I've seen high school cover bands with more charisma.

I looked at the TooManyGames concert, and the second "most viewed moment" started with James bending over. I thought it was because you could see his bald spot, but then he got up and started doing this obscene "duck walk" as the commenters called it. Good. Gravy.

"neighbor john" seems like he's probably a decent neighbor, nice guy to have a beer with occasionally, but he has zero charisma and adds less than nothing to these videos. james is spouting off various facts about the franchise, the game etc and john's contributions to the video are like "yo we should play gta, that game's awesome."

Crowd looked to be about 50 people. Not a great turn out. Somehow it's even more pathetic to see 3 guys doing the devil horns in a crowd like that. It's like when a friend is bombing on stage and you're cheering them on to keep 'em going but you're unknowingly making it more awkward.

This had the potential to be a good video and I guess the nicest thing you could say about it is that it's okay. There's the usual awkward moments between the two of them but it's just not going anywhere. The conversations just aren't interesting at best and cringe and awkward at worst. Ironically, James probably would have responded better to Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle.

It's a very fun casual puzzle game that's a love letter to the series. Way better than the other game without drama from the devs. When watching James' video it mildly infruiates me whenever anyone says that the lawsuit shut the game down when that's not entirely what happened. James even states that they couldn't add Jason X to the game but no. He is in the game:

Honestly I think that the hyper focusing on the way he says mountain is a little disingenuous because it isn’t unique to him. He’s from New Jersey they all talk like that.

He could have addressed it years ago by shaving it off, hair plugs, just permanently wear a hat and that could have been worked into the AVGN character in an awkward but possibly funny way. But he waited too long. Anything he does to address it and he's fucked: shave it? It acknowledges detractors although this would be the best option. Get hair plugs? Acknowledge detractors and get accused of having a mid-life crisis. And to be fair, Rex Viper is DEFINITELY a mid-life crisis move.

It's a no-win situation with the hair.

When did I say it ruins the episodes? I said that it looks bad but I don’t remember saying it ruins the episodes.

Elfy and Beardo along with the Redditors make fun of something he can’t do anything about and really isn’t an issue since everyone from that area in New Jersey talks like that.

Genuinely I am dumbfounded as to why he hasn’t included even a single joke about playing bad games has turned him bald from stress, it’s right there in front of him and he hasn’t capitalised on it at all. I genuinely don’t know if it’s just shame or he’s that crap a writer he can’t write even the most obvious gags that aren’t swearing like a Tourette’s syndrome patient on strong crack and discussing animal faeces and which he’d like to drink.m or eat accordingly.

Like late I really was the secret brains behind the whole thing and the series will never be the same without him? Out of curiosity what is there current relationship at this point? I’ve literally maybe only watched one AVGN vid this year which was the earthworm Jim one due to fatigue. If things get too bleak for James do you think he’ll try and crawl back to his buddy matei and ask him to help him with episodes again? Do you think he’d help James?
