"Zero Punctuation" and "Dev Diary" by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw - The only thing worth watching on The Escapist

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I remember seeing a clip where someone superchats from Florida talking about watching while sheltering from a hurricane, and Yahtzee said something about how he should be less worried about the hurricane and more worried about that evil Rethuglikkkan Ron DeSantis.
I hate any non-amerimutt going on about US politics but anglos are especially grating when it comes to this.
there's some ongoing massive drama at The Escapist, and Yahtzee has quit. looks like it's over for the Escapist... except they're still retaining the rights to Zero Punctuation, lol.

update1 for anyone coming from Happenings: Nick J Calandra, the editor in chief at the Escapist, was fired, causing a mass resignation event that included Yahtzee. the reason given by Nick is that he was fired for "not achieving goals", which can mean anything.

Holy shit, i completly missed that. Now that's fucking bad, should've checked the fine print before signing on. Escapist closing down in 3, 2, 1...

Is The Escapist finally dying? It seems to of been on life support for a number of years now and recent events should change that.
ZP -was- the Escapist. No one gave a shit about their other stuff. Yahtzee kept it afloat for 15 years and no he is gone is RIP. They have been shilling super hard in recent videos too, so might be hard up for cash. (Also be sure to have sponsorblock installed along with your adblock these days)

Been watching the dude for nearly the whole time too, wild he didn't take any steps to secure more for himself.

What is with internet content creators and selling off their basic fuckin IP? At least this isn't quite as bad as Doug Walker selling off the Critic to some weirdo, since Doug is physically incapable of doing anything else. At least Yahtzee can just do a different game review show, just probably at normal speed instead.

Was wondering why he stuck around at the escapist for so long when he's literally been carrying the website for practically his entire career.

He's boasted about being well-paid by The Escapist. When he first got hired there he was poor and only had a few popular videos, some let's play threads on Something Awful and some niche videogames that he made (the videogames were primarily distributed for free with him later releasing paid versions with some director commentary).

Basically he needed money and they paid him well. He probably loved the ego boost as well because he's a pretentious twat.

I wonder what exactly he means by not having the rights to ZP because that can be pretty broad. Is it just the name or does it extend to the art style and format too? How petty is the Escapist willing to be to fuck over Yahtzee and the people riding his coat tail?
IIRC the "Zero Punctuation" name was something The Escapist came up with, as is the music and titles. Anything Croshaw created while employed by The Escapist, they own, which is standard.

He can still make videos with the same art style (and so can they), but he can't call it ZP and he can't use the music or intro/outro cards. IIRC he got dinged pretty hard back when he was just a goon making these videos for fun, as he used copyrighted music for the intros, including A FUCKING BEATLES SONG (Octopus's Garden) in his review of BioShock.

I think it's understandable to just want to make your dumb videos and have money, taxes, benefits, promotion, etc. handled by someone else. That shit is a pain in the ass to wrangle on your own.

I think he sold the "art style" to them a few years ago. I say this only because the whole site uses the ZP style art now, which wouldn't make sense from a liability standpoint otherwise.

Edit: He made two free-lance "prototype" videos which, as of three days ago, remained on his own Youtube channel but everything after that, including at least three months of random music intros, was on the Escapist.

You can't copyright an art style. That goes for both Croshaw and The Escapist.
No, but you can copywrite art assets and the fact that they gave everyone a ZP-style pill-person avatar to use in their videos even without Yatzhee present doesn't bode well for him still retaining ownership of it.

The thing that always amazed me about the escapist is how much of a one man show it was but they had like 20 people working for it. If you look at the view count differences between Yahtzees videos and the other people working there it's night and day. On average non Yahtzee videos get about 1/10th of view views.

You probably can, actually. At least you could trademark it, probably.
No, you can't, as it infringes upon Fair Use. It's why you can make all sorts of fun "George Floyd fucks Anne Frank in the style of Pixar" images on Stable Diffusion.

New Yahtzee will wear a baseball cap instead of a fedora, viewers don't care, what matters is his voice.

The thing is that it works in reverse, too. Yahtzee's in for a nasty surprise if he thinks that he's anything without ZP. None of Yahtzee's stuff has made any impact outside of ZP and most of it involves/involved the ZP avatar and setup.

His Patreon is now fucked since ZP was a major selling point, and Extra Punctuation would at the very least have to be rebranded and redesigned. Unless he's playing the long game and hopes to swoop in and buy back ZP for a pittance when the Escapist files for bankruptcy, he's screwed himself in the process.

Why is his Patreon fucked? He can still make videos, anyone who cares enough to donate to his Patreon cares more about Yahtzee himself than the Zero Punctuation name. He'll just call them Fully Ramblomatic which is IIRC what they were called originally. The Escapist still owns the old videos and will cruise on their YouTube revenue until they finally go under and Yahtzee can buy the rights back for pennies on the dollar.

Theyre gonna close by the end of 23 maybe early 24, theyre literally begging for money on the street corner at this point. They tried memberships, they tried patreon, they tried all the sponsorship crap, they get like 10k views max for every non ZP shit. I guess this is the death of gaming journalism except when Soros pays to keep Kotaku afloat like he did with Vice. Kotaku and TheGamer are literally training schools for Bloomberg, Vice, NYT and Vox at this point.
I was right, I was fucking right. I'm pretty sure now since yahtzees gone the escapist is probably gonna try to use ai voices to fill in for zp cause everybody knows nobody watches the escapist for anything else. Yahtzee himself I think will create a new venture with Nick calandra since they seem to be very close friends. I hate to say it but I liked zp and this shit was written on the wall ever since they apologized to Zoe Quinn and rehired moviebob. It's like whatculture all over again. But the funny thing is that Jimbo sterling was able to get away with the jimquisition while yahtzee had to give up zp, he's still very talented and will land on his feet but it's a shame the inferior crap gets to keep on going.
