The only thing I can compare to Nick's attitude is the attitude of a habitual drunk driver. The kind of guy who has multiple DUIs and is still out driving drunk. They have usually lost most everything and don't care. They have been to jail usually multiple times and it doesn't phase them. All they do is bitch about the people they blame for their own problems and go on about how nobody is going to tell them they can't drive. It often keeps going on until they kill someone.

Beyond Nick refusing to accept that he has a alcholism and drug problem, Nick can't even accept that his arrest was the consequences of his reckless and stupid behavior. He can't even accept that he made mistakes just as a degenerate junkie. April and Kayla seem to be no different. None of them did anything wrong and none of them have a problem. Everything was just fine at the house and with the kids. Its all the fault of the "bitch" at church, the pastor, Kayla's disloyal family or Aaron.

In his streams, you can see his ideas for the trial starting to come together. He thinks he can get the warrant thrown out by just offering alternative explainations for all the probable cause. That he can gaslight a judge and a jury to do what he wants. It wouldn't surprise me if he was thinking about taking the stand himself at the trial. How could a jury disagree with Nick? If Nick tells a jury he is a christian trad dad who has been sick and is very busy due to his children, how could they believe that he does coke?

I also strongly suspect now that the "blame the kids" defense by EVS and others originated with Nick himself.. That he has thought about deflecting the issues around the children by saying that they should have been taking care of themselves. How can anyone say he was neglecting them when he was spending all his time doing things for them?

I think Nick has seen paradise in the form of his pre-arrest trap house and nothing (including prison) is going to keep him from his quest to get back to it.

The problem with certain evangelical approaches is that they treat grace as a literal license to sin. There are some that hold that "saved" people are beyond sin. Nick holds that particular idea.

The other problem often among evangelicals is a lack of understanding that genuine repentance is necessary. That you can't just use grace and salvation to get the people you have wronged to stop talking about what you have done & be unconditionally socially accepted again.

I have always taken the story of David to be one of the many examples in the Torah of how a good man can fall. The big difference between Rekieta and those men is that people like David, Abraham, Moses, Samson etc etc recognize their failings and vow to atone for them. David doesn’t just murderize a dude to steal his wife and God go “you rascal.” He has to atone, admit what he has done, and it’s the point that sorta marks his departure as a significant character.
