Bad/mediocre anime with good openings

Hellsing TV series. This trainwreck of a series shouldnt have a soundtrack THIS fucking good and yet it somehow does
Literally the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the title of this thread a few minutes ago, haha.

Hellsing Ultimate is great. The "original" Hellsing anime is garbage, albeit entertaining garbage ... The story makes no sense and the series finale was flat-out nonsensical from what I remember.

But damn if that opening intro wasn't hype every time I watched it, and damn if I didn't have somewhat of a fun time watching those 13 episodes despite knowing full well it was trash. lol.

It was nonsensical, because the guy who made it wanted to discard the entire published manga (which was right on the whole massacre in the hotel), and instead tell his pretentious story. Also doesn't help, that the trailer was based on fucking lies.

What do you have against Wataru? It's a very cute show.
Yeah, it's cute, but fantasy mecha is never as good as regular mecha, mostly because of the usual RPG setting and lack of focus on technology. Wataru in particular felt a lot more like a battle shonen than the Braves/Eldrans/Mazinger or even Gundam SEED, which people always say is a battle shonen, did since it's about a human being a saviour (because he just is, okay?) and going on the hero's journey, and the humans didn't really feel dependent on technology. The only other mecha anime I've seen that is like this are TTGL (self-explanatory) and GodMars, mostly because the latter had such an ANGSTY main character and the battles were so one-sided. I'll have to see Chou Wataru, though, since it's supposed to be about Wataru learning not to lose his pure heart.

A somewhat "eh" anime title I had a slight fondness for is Ayane's High Kick. Yet another cut-short 90s OVA series from that late 1990s period when the OVA format was in decline from the golden age of the 1980s to early 1990s. It was still licensed in America by one of Central Park Media's divisions, but it was originally supposed to go for six episodes but abruptly ends at two. A not very bright but determined girl wants to become a pro-wrestler despite her constant failure at auditions and finds a coach who tricks her - not that it's hard - into training as a kickboxer since he sees potential in her legwork. I did like the opening theme, though.

People say this is one of the worst mecha anime of the 2000s (the director quit partway through and took all the planning notes with him, leaving everyone scrambling to put something together at the last minute) but the OP, both with respect to the song and even how it's storyboarded, is pretty good. It's an original Satelight anime, and those are usually worth watching if they're not called Macross (Scared Rider Xechs was great, the Aquarion OVA was great, Aquarion Logos is really cool and interesting, the Miniskirt Pirates movie was entertaining enough, and Last Hope had a bit of cool stuff, but it was stretched out way too long because we just HAD to see our cast straight out of a quirky Tumblr SuperWhoLock fanfic shoot the breeze -- it was pretty disappointing how the physics technobabble was so underused; Houkago no Pleiades used more physics than Last Hope and that's a magic girl show).

I wouldn't call the show outright bad but Bokurano. I love the manga but the anime kind of numbed and changed some of the heavier aspects of it so it didn't hit quite as hard. Animation and direction were also a bit weak, not terrible but I don't think studio Gonzo is the best for action scenes (CG mechs especially looked a bit off). Kind of a shame cause I feel it could've been really something in different hands.

That being said the anime has one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Probably in my top 10 for anime openings honestly, really haunting and addictive

I'm noticing a lot of mecha anime posted in this thread, and I raise one more with Aldnoah Zero.
The writing is only really promising for the first three episodes that Urobuchu directly wrote and then it quickly becomes clear it's mediocre slop with a few memeable bits for the rest of its run. But the music is great across the board, enough that despite barely remembering the characters or plot I do remember the insert songs could always get me a bit excited to watch the protagonist destroy some generic evil asshole with the power of weaponized autism.

The concept of the anime of the evil side having the super mecha was interesting, but it was too boring to care. The only thing I know about it besides the opening is that it had a cuck ending.
