Hurricane Milton

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
He’s losing steam fast. Hopefully the storm surge predictions start dropping.
No, he's finishing up a replacement cycle. He's going to get stronger and bigger over the next 12 hours. The uncertainty is what happens tomorrow on final approach. He is definitely going to weaken, but we don't know by how much.

I never really paid much attention to stuff happening in the US for most of my life, so maybe I am wrong, but doesn't it feel like there's been A LOT of more horrible natural disasters and hurricanes? Or is this just normal for Floridians? I wonder if eventually some areas will just become uninhabitable because they will keep getting hit by storms and floods...
The hurricanes are admittedly poorly timed, but about par for the course for a particularly heavy hurricane season. Florida usually gets trashed once or twice per season, we just don't bother reporting on it much unless they got  really schwacked. As someone that lives in a hurricane area, what surprises me is how late in the season these big storms are occurring, normally you're through the worst of it by September.

This is par for the course in Florida. Big hurricanes happen pretty frequently, though they don't always head straight for major population centers.

Florida folks have hurricane parties and drink beer for most hurricanes. We're numb to it, mostly, and lots of people just assume that it will miss them last.minute.

Extreme development has cause the financial damages caused by hurricanes to increase dramatically in the last few decades, because rich people spend millions of dollars building lavish beach houses.

Nope. He got too close to Mexico. That energy lost doesn’t magically come back.

Milton continues to show an impressively structured eye. I wouldn't surprised if the pressure has dropped a little.

That was before FL really beefed up their modifications to the IRC. New construction since then has higher design wind speeds.
yeah, Andrew happened to hit a MESS of new construction, and in the wake of the storm they hella beefed up the codes
I've seen models where the storm surge pushes into rivers and canals, it's really nasty.
that's not uncommon. I recall a storm or few back people off the suchandsuch waterway were posting videos of how their backyards were now part of the waterway, and manatees were swimming up and eating their bushes
It has been raining long enough and the humidity has been high enough for long enough as a result that I have to re-do all the caulk on my windows and doors. I hope people are okay and all that, but hopefully one positive from this big bastard rolling through will be things finally drying up a bit holy shit. I feel like I've been living underwater for a whole fucking month.

Honestly it's not that bad compared to Australia.
Australia is basically Florida Super Hardcore Mode
Who would win, Florida Man or FEMA chopper?
Florida Man. We have a rich history of targeting choppers with lasers for funsies, upgrading what we aim isn't a boggle.
Central Florida bros. Shpuld we be evacuating?
if you're low-lying or a trailer or one of the other easy "yes" then yes, otherwise probably not? "Central FL" can be a lot of different stuff and surprisingly different elevations

What you are missing is what has happened recently in advance of Milton. Look up Miami rainfall and flooding…
not just Miami, Orlando-ish has been getting a mess of rain the past week or so two, so hopefully Milton blasts through and bails quick
I don't know if anyone's mentioned it, but part of the shit show most people don't consider is the abrupt human migration experienced by the entire gulf coast.
I-4 was a total mess heading into Orlando yesterday, I-75 and the Turnpike north, too

Finally convinced my friend to GTFO before this one hits. Brah got lucky and was just a few miles away from the major damage with Helene. I was able to at least convince him to pack a fuck off bag and check into a motel 10 miles from the coast for this one, although I'd get way farther myself.

Good luck everyone I wish everyone in the path stays safe and is ok.

It absolutely does. Hurricanes get their energy out of the sea surface, with all that heat and moisture. With a large portion of the storm over the comparatively dry Yucatan, especially at night, it's losing energy because it can't suck up any of that heat or moisture from land. Now that Milton's back over the toasty warm Gulf of Mexico we can expect it to reintensify somewhat.

The question now is how much strength he'll regain, or if he's gonna lose energy and speed as he approaches Florida.

If anyone has any good youtubers that put a lot of interesting coverage on this please share it with me. I can't stand listening to a forecaster repeat "This is bad" "This is dangerous" a thousand times without it losing my attention where as I'm positive there are some really solid sources of interesting coverage by hobbyists and storm chasers who can inject a bit more energy into the reporting. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks!
This lady has some interesting videos from time to time on these sorts of subjects. I've also enjoyed her reporting on the increased seismic activity beneath Campi Flegrei (Naples supervolcano).

How does Pinellas county (and the rest of Tampa bay by extension) have so much plot armor to not be directly impacted by the hurricane every damn time? heard that it’s because of Native Americans blessing the area but that sounds kinda wild
Florida folks have hurricane parties and drink beer for most hurricanes.
Can confirm, we took as many cans as we could when we dipped out the county

Guys, I'm not sure I see the big deal with this storm. Why does everybody need to evacuate? Who's scared of some rain and some wind? Nigga really fast wind is still just fucking wind. Flooding? I can swim I'm not black, no biggie. And if I see some debris coming I'll just move out of the way, duh. I have no stats to back this up but I feel like I'd be okay if I just went out there, what do you guys think?
