They’re most likely trying very hard to pander milquetoast pop culture references to modern audience like certain skins and guest characters in MK1. Cage basically makes Marvel-tier jokes now, so relatable to me fr fr.

It’s just cumbersome. Watch as Boon even dare to put Hsu Hao or Kobra of all Kombatants in the polls or teasing them for KP3 and turn them into girlbosses again like what they do with Ketchup and Mustard. Funny thing was, the entirety of the MK userbase unanimously agreed that nobody likes Hsu Hao.

To live the thread up a bit; which MK character that you always see as your childhood hero, and what’s your favorite alternative costume of that Kombatant from which game?

I grew up with the MK 1992 casts when I was a small fry; and Raiden was the badass god that I grew attached to, along with Sonya. Throughout my time growing up with MK during its magnum opus; I also grew a likelihood towards Kitana, Mileena and Jade, and Tanya for some unknown reason.
My personal favorite skin for Raiden was his samurai alt. from MKDA with his mighty long white hair out. It’s an underrated game, in my opinion; aside from me liking Deception and its Konquest mode. I also awe over Sareena and her siblings, Kia and Jataaka’s design when I first watch some MKM:SZ videos; because my first impression as a teen was that I thought they have anime designs converted into real life.

I also dig for the palette swap ninjas as well; and mained Scorpion in MK2 as well. I’d randomly hyper-tapping buttons in MK 1992, 2, UMK3 in a heartbeat. My personal favorite villains are also Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn and Quan Chi.

I low key enjoy watching Sindel and Shao Kahn wreck every hero in the expansion of that last game. Seeing the boring Kitana and Liu Kang get destroyed is beautiful.

Probably payback for people spamming the bicycle kick and fan toss in MK9 against boss Kahn.

But to answer the childhoods hero question. Keep in mind, endless MK9 bootlicking. I'm sorry, I'm nostalgia fagging hard about that game.

For some reason kid me fucking loved MK9 Jade. Not because of tits but because I just really thought she was cook and was the better girl ninja between her and Kitana. Kid me imagined she'd be cool to hang out with.

Playing through 9s story, I was really fond of Cyrax too. I empathized with him deeply and I had this thing where I got attached to the earnest, underdog, honorable characters. Which is why MK1 can blow me.

It helped that he was black too. Yeah back then I somehow got more attached to unfortunate black characters. Without the nig aspect, I still like Cyrax.

I liked Smoke too. His flowing glorious hair, "Where there is fire, there is smoke", ugh he's so cool! I still like him these days.

I tend to gravitate to background characters more than the main cast so. Even as a kid. I was really into Kabal and Stryker too for this reason. You can imagine my continued dismay over the two of them being deemed jobbers.

As always, as a kid, palette swap ninjas but especially the Lin Kuei. Smoke was my favorite but still quite liked Sub-Zero as well. They were a cool bash-brothers duo to imagine together. I ended up loving Cage over time as well - meeting his and Raiden's actors at a con, getting pics of them with my twin and I, seeing them amused we played palette swap ninjas as an in-joke on ourselves will always be fun to remember.

Costume-wise, the one thing left at this rate I like about MK12 is the Lin Kuei costume. It's the perfect outfit to give just enough little unique details to (like the masks) outside the color schemes, but otherwise having the perfect blend of uniformity and practicality. Even if this was magically the "old" timeline LK uniform I could see how the Shirai Ryu continues to copy it to mock them and Reptile using it in disguise to blend in what with seeing all those LK and Scorpion running about the tournament.

So I remember reading on the MK Wiki about Ermac that John Tobias in a 2011 tweet confirmed he was the red ninja helping Smoke pilot the bomber that dropped off Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, and Kung Lao, and was likely meant as an easter egg alongside the in-game hidden character hint of "Ermac does not exist" over the rumors of a red ninja named thus in MK1.

I wonder how to fit in an LK-origin Ermac now. Perhaps he joined Sub and Smoke looking for Bi-Han in MK2, only to be killed and his corpse become the physical vessel for Ermac, the batch of souls, lumped into one. I suppose eventually he can meet Sub-Zero in Deception or so and LK-Ermac pops out to explain he's got a higher purpose now and thus released from duty by Sub, knowing his old buddy is safe in the end. No worse than Sub-Zero canonically eventually finding Noob and Smoke in the Netherrealm during Deception. I'd like to say an MK2 Ermac as a hidden character can use the Teleport Punch both as a reference to using it in all his future move sets, but also keeps the "hidden ninjas use Scorpion's specials" MK1 Reptile, MK2 Noob and Smoke, and MK3 Smoke did in using his Spear.

Since Rain's original-but-scrapped bio as a freelance Lin Kuei working for Shao and having second thoughts on that due to his home Earth being invaded was shown in the Trilogy manuals for Playstation... hmmm. Rain grew up on Earth and became a Lin Kuei who went to work for Shao, eventually finds out about his Edenian demigodhood come Armageddon as in reality, and becomes the megalomaniacal douchebag we all know and love. I do, however, ponder if Rain was meant to more or less Hydro from those Malibu comics except actually real and with a unique color, though that Legacy web series seems to indicate they got Hydro's rights, and that one MK!1 Towers of Time fight has you fighting "Hydro" as a light blue/cyan-colored Sub-Zero complete with some water-based specials.

Tremor I think got confused for the above scrapped Rain origin since Rain in those manuals was orange instead of purple colored, but if they intended to shift that bio to him except he went to work for the Black Dragon, so be it.

And of course, as I explained above, Hanzo-Scorpion has the LK uniform but yellow to mock the Lin Kuei while Reptile seeing this common uniform would copy it for himself. So every ninja and cyber-ninja but these two at one point worked for the Lin Kuei, perhaps even all together at once, before Bi-Han bit the dust in MK1 and things fell apart for their brotherhood from there.

Either way, I prefer to see Mokap as a comedy relief character that functions like Shujinko, except he's a normal ol' motion capture artist that seems to be always see magic, explosion, bugs and otherworldly shit as special effects, VFX and props. He also sees everyone like if they're also an another mocap for the greenscreen. I wanted to make Mokap goofy to match with old MK's gore and goof kinda theme that NRS stripped away.
I will keep saying this, Janet Cage SHOULD'VE been Mokap, literally the biggest missed opportunity and it makes perfect sense, Mokap is Cage's personal Motion Capture guy meant to play for him in his movies, of course he'd know all of Cages moves.

Also (((they))) did the thing:

And Reiko’s Halloween skin looks like this:

I’ll assume Ghostface, an another movie guest character will appear in November 19, which begins the Kombat Pack 2 roster. Expect Jade to become a bland girlboss lesbian for Kitana next.

Liu Kang molded the universe but cant stop the love of his life from being either on women or human Raiden (we see a minimum tease between the two)

Like what is his problem?
Remember, it's the people at NRS that are responsible for everything that's happened to this franchise.

For fun, I took the confirmed death of every playable fighter in the Midway timeline up to and including Deception itself, while ignoring the "everyone comes back" aspect of Armageddon. They could die and revive as much as the story proclaimed so long as they were alive by the end of Deception. Every death was either confirmed in an ending or a Konquest mode, and I was helped by looking over the ancient gameFAQs "Mortal Kombat Plot FAQ" said FAQ's curator stated John Vogel looked over and confirmed as correct almost a couple decades ago at this rate. I've got a lot of thoughts on it as well I'll put in a separate spoiler box.

-Mokap (MKDA, no official return since his MKDA ending)
-Ashrah (MKD, ascended from the Netherrealm in her MKD ending)
-Shujinko (MKD, killed by Raiden in Raiden's MKD ending)

-I'm pleasantly shocked at how much tighter the cast feels when you slice out all the confirmed inactive cast: you still 1) keep almost all the new-to-3D era characters (Sektor, Kai, Rain, etc.), 2) eliminate or keep away unpopular new OR old characters (Sheeva, Kobra, Motaro, etc.), and 3) return more popular ones to this game (Kung Lao, Frost, Shao Kahn, etc.) In gameplay terms alone that's very useful.

-Many of the inactive characters are flatly not needed for MKA's Konquest story. Kobra's fight can easily be done by Kira (who's right there with him!), Mileena just spouts off like one line before getting her ass kicked, Sheeva just roars during the Shinnok part of the story, etc. The biggest aspect of the story is the New Deadly Alliance between Shao, Onaga, Shang, and Quan Chi and it's not hard to imagine the returned-to-power Shao getting tipped off by Shinnok about Blaze's power - Shinnok explicitly stated to Daegon that's what he did for a lot of fighters.

-Ashrah's bio states she needed to "slay" Noob to ascend out of Hell and her ending seeing her do that implies it, but... it also states she "defeated" than "slayed" him. And Noob I allowed in because of that loophole alongside his part of Konquest being useful to let Sub-Zero successfully revive both Smoke (we see him on the Light side at Armageddon) but not Noob.

-Notice Sareena's bio states Noob, Smoke, and Quan Chi ambushed and Quan forced her back to the Dark side, while in Rain's bio Quan "an emissary of Shinnok" also informed Rain of his godly heritage. Since Quan Chi blew up in this scenario, I'm willing to let it that Shinnok directly got Noob back on his side somehow and also directly informed Rain of his demigodhood. Makes me wonder if Shinnok re-recruited Scorpion to his side over them both being mad at the Elder Gods, but we'll never know.

-A number of nonsensical endings make more sense looking at the few MKA bios and Konquest. A good example is Jax suddenly becoming a cyborg and Tekunin leader via a microchip implanted into his head by Sektor, but Sonya's bio states he got captured by them pre-Battle and they noticed his brainwave patterns being different - a reference to the microchip his ending revealed. I'm convinced Cyrax is back at the Lin Kuei due to his ending stating he and Sub-Zero defeated and reprogrammed Sektor and Smoke while Sektor's ending has him mold with Cyrax and Smoke - why else would Cyrax be so involved with the Lin Kuei again after spending time in the OIA since MK4?

-Conversely, some endings and bios feel like dress rehearsals for plot points we see in later games. Johnny Cage's bio stating he became leader of the good guys in absence of Liu Kang or Raiden definitely is a foreshadowing to his MKX story and maturing. Sonya's all-female fighting force defending the realms feels like a prelude to her MK11's "god squad" ending. Sub-Zero has to fend off Sektor's Tekunin, Noob's demon army, and Frost's ego evoking their jealousy at not controlling the Lin Kuei as Grandmaster. Liu's ending is a wealth of later stuff he canonically deals with in the NRS timeline: he's fused with his ghost into a live body again (MK11 revenant and past self), fights Raiden (MK9 and MK11's Anagnorisis), and becomes Protector God of Earthrealm (MK9 in the bad way, MK11 in the good).

-Honestly? Just like the gameplay, the story feels much tighter with this specific cast and the plot points up to now. Shinnok is the ultimate bad guy here: he got word of Blaze from Daegon, and in an attempt to secure ultimate power, is sowing word of Blaze amongst everyone else while recruiting both old troops and new ones alongside a clone of himself as personal insurance at the Pyramid. Meanwhile, Shao Kahn is back to controlling Outworld and taking on the gambit of securing Blaze's power with his own warriors in his weakened yet again ascendant state. The good guys once again gather up, but they still not only lost Liu (ghost, yo), but Raiden is "gone" according to Cage's bio and we learn in his MKA bio and Konquest he made deals with Shinnok and Shao Kahn to fruitlessly protect Earthrealm. The Edenian army in Outworld that was a plot point since MKDA got destroyed by the newly-reunited Shao Kahn and Goro's Shokan in their MKD endings, so Edenia is in no power to resist all the fighters converging at the Pyramid. We can assume the Tekunin and New Black Dragon got word from Shinnok or Shao to join up with them in return for some power. And so forth. You can even throw in the "Liu battles Raiden in every timeline" bit from Kronika by having Zombie Liu weaken Raiden critically before he can take down Shao Kahn, who then takes Blaze's power. And boom. And of course, if you want a happy ending for the Midway timeline, Liu manages to win, become not just human again but a god, and puts down Raiden to become Protector of Earthrealm and presumably Mortal Kombat is finally done with.

Ghostface trailer is out. Another horror movie guest character.

Is anyone else sick of the arrogant version of Kung Lao? When the first teaser for MK1 came out I was actually happy for once that we would get a more humble Lao and actually appreciated the lessons he was being taught...... Only for NRS to blue ball us and still give us an arrogant Lao and retcon that teaser into Kang coming to "The Great Kung Lao". Which I thought was exceptionally fucking dumb.

NRS literally turned him into an AZN Redditor kek.

Same as you. I prefer if Kung Lao to be humble instead of being an arrogant Chink side character that has an ego bigger than Onaga's size. The writers at NRS have no fucking idea what to do with Kung Lao as a character, nor even paying homage to his original personality. His hair is not the main problem, it's how NRS kept blueballing every retarded retcon as much as possible to pander further to the "modern userbase" without even focusing on the original material and faithfulness. That being said from a Raidenfag, who also dislike the Raiden retcon and the multiverse collision retcon bullshit that Noob (Boon) goes.
The fact that they turned Johnny Cage into a "How do you do fellow kids" meme / reference quoter is one of the most criminal things they've done with MK1, tbh.
Whilst Johnny Cage is a Hollywood star, NRS slapped way too fucking much milquetoast movie references so much that it makes him painfully unfunny.
