Mega Rad Gun Thread

It's a shame Springfield Trapdoor reproductions are so fucking expensive. I've been wanting one for a while but can't really justify $2,500 for a single shot .45-70 right now without selling something else and I loathe to sell one gun to buy another. The Taylor 26" officer model is just so attractive though.
buy a original. almost 700,000 were made.

Sometimes even the government gets something right.

I have plans for the one I want, and I'd rather not ruin an antique. The cheaper (nice) originals are usually .50-70, which I'd rather avoid dealing with all together. The .45-70 originals are within the range where I'd rather just get a repro for my plans anyways.

what are you going to do with it?

The plan is to eventually, after enjoying it in its stock form, turn it into a slightly modified Disruptor from The Mandalorian. The last few years I've grown a habit of turning various excess guns into shooting Sci-fi guns. Not even a fan of Star Wars, just liked the show and the gun was neat.

So @Club Sandwich I got the Cobb the other day. Holy fuck I was not expecting it to weigh 15.5lbs in its current configuration. Considering the listing said 10lbs. I can't legally hunt with it in Idaho now which is dumb. It also has a proprietary handguard and barrel nut so I can't easily rebarrel it. That said. Reliability has been interesting. It has issues chambering the first round, however once it chambers, it ate everything from tula 308, to Barnes 308 match. As well as WWB 7.62x51 and some Armscor stuff.

Yes that is an AR-10 carry handle on it.

iirc the upper itself is very close to an Armalite with some minor differences (a clone, but modified for long action and short action cartridges). the barrel nut looks like a YHM job that could use their barrel nut wrench (YHM-9621). you would have to measure the distance between holes though. the short action Cobb was a lot better than the long action, and i seems like you won out. G3 mags aren't as cheap as they used to be but it beats having to get KAC mags or AICS.

Lighter handguard/stock, maybe flute the barrel? (I'd personally rather not, with the latter, since it also means it'll heat up faster.)

Maybe a local shop might be willing to skeletonize some remaining bits if need be.

That law sounds retarded tho. It's a shame to have to deface that beast. I bet the extra weight helps a lot with recoil. Not that I envy you the carry weight.

Edit: although, what are the odds Fish & Wildlife is going to see your rifle and decide to weigh it?

Edit2: Come to think of it, I've seen some real nice cheap hunting furniture with the camo patterns painted on. Maybe look at some of those. Could easily hot-swap them for hunting season(s), and the camo adds a little utility even. Based on the price alone, I'm assuming they're cheap plastic junk, and ergo should be light-weight.

Also the soft points are absolutely devastating anti personnel rounds. Way more energy foot-pounds than 5.56 too.
I have some Hornady Black ballistic tips just for hunting. Absolute deer killers right there, as well as low penetration if I need it/am concerned about walls. 7.62x39mm is one of the most versatile rounds I've ever seen. Moderate recoil, decent range, good energy, and because of being 30 cal, many flavors.

Edit: Also got more ammo on my paycheck. This online buying is fun but expensive lol.

So the only reason that law exists is because a couple chuckle fucks shot a deer with a 50 cal, punched through it, and killed another hunter. So they banned amy rifle over 15lbs to keep people from using anti material rifles.

So the magwell in there is supposedly some kind of "universal" well that uses their proprietary mag and G3 mags. Sadly I don't have proprietary ones to test with.

You could probably get below 15 if you replace the stock and buffer tube with a carbine tube and M4 waffle stock.

Try swapping the handgards for polymer. And what others have said, a skeleton stock. Literally ditch everything that you can. Maybe even the optic if it weighs more than the irons. It'll kick harder but it'll be legal.

He may have to do that anyways. I skimmed the law (asked google) about it, and one of the qualifiers was you can't have "electronic devices" attached. Which likely includes red dots and LPVOs.
