Gijsbert Karel van Hogendorp back at WTC Rotterdam​

On Friday, November 17, we celebrate the replacement of the restored statue of the Rotterdam statesman Gijsbert Karel van Hogendorp (1867) at WTC Rotterdam on the Coolsingel.

The work of art has already stood in various locations, but since 1961 the work of art by the Belgian sculptor Jozef Geefs has stood on the Beurstrappen of the trading building. Due to a large-scale renovation of the entrance, the artwork once again had to be given a new place, this time in front of the stairs on the terrace.

On the occasion of this relocation, BKOR is publishing the book The statue, the man and the statue Gijsbert Karel van Hogendorp written by Frank van Dijl.

Gijsbert Karel van Hogendorp (1762-1834) was a pensionary of Rotterdam before the French rule. In 1813 he stood at the cradle of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Around the centenary of his birth, Rotterdam entrepreneurs took the initiative to honor Van Hogendorp with a statue. Although he points a finger at the constitution he designed, he is mainly remembered as an advocate of free trade.

After the statue was completed by Geefs, after a long search, it turned out that there was only room behind the Schielandshuis (the then Boymans Museum), even though that was the furthest edge of the city at that time. During the war the statue was stored for safety reasons.

After the war, Van Hogendorp was placed back on his pedestal, but in 1961 the statue had to be moved due to the construction of the garden of the Historical Museum. The four-meter-high bronze statue was placed on the back of the platform of the Beurstrappen at the entrance of WTC Rotterdam.

In the 1980s the statue was moved again, this time to the front of the platform where it overlooks the Coolsingel. After forty years Gijsbert Karel van Hogendorp removed from its place again on April 28, 2020. The statue had to be thoroughly restored and was subsequently placed in storage, because the main entrance of WTC Rotterdam underwent a major transformation due to the arrival of two escalators in the landing.

BKOR and the municipality of Rotterdam have found a new place for the statue, this time in front of the stairs on the terrace. The new round plinth will be made of Norwegian granite and has the same materiality as the granite that architect JF Staal selected for the platform, the stairs and the facade of the Beurs in 1940.

Publication

On the occasion of the transfer, BKOR is publishing a publication about the life and work of Van Hogendorp written by Frank van Dijl. Van Dijl (1951) is a journalist and writer. He made his debut as a novelist in 2019 with Of stone.

He published The evenings forever about Gerard Reve's debut and his reflections on his travel letters are published by Fragment publishers. He is editor of the fortnightly opinion newspaper Argus.
