Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

People are way too quick to label something "woke" and the term has been watered down because of outrage merchants who neglect more plausible explanations for the failure (or success) of a game. There is a lot of confirmation bias and inevitable purity spiraling as people become ideologically invested in defeating "wokeness".

Triforce hunt is great, its the game opening up and telling you to explore its world now with most of the tools unlocked to 100% it. Its the largest chunk of uninterrupted gameplay in a Zelda game (until botw came out).

While Wind Waker definitely could've used at least 1 more dungeon I don't get why people decide that some gameplay has less value than others. Wind Waker at it's core is a game about adventure and exploration and the Triforce hunt is that exemplified. Are people in such a rush to finish a game they forget the point of the game is to play it?
I wouldn't say it's great but it's definitely not nearly as bad as people say, it's just the relative low point of the game. I'd rather be doing a dungeon, exploring a town, or just finding new things and places, experiencing a set-piece than just fishing for Triforce pieces. I guess it's just not that exciting.

But yeah, WW is the very incarnation of adventure and exploration, the hunt isn't out of place at all. I do think people were just in too much of a rush for it. That's why the 2nd biggest complaint is always the travel speed. Like bro...relax, you'll get there. It ain't a speedrun.

You're the "it's only pronouns and a trans flag, relax" type.

The only things that bother me in wind waker are how slow the wind waker is to change wind direction (or anything else it does) and the gallery side quest, don't even attempt it. The problem isn't the 3 photo limit its that for every single photo you turn in you have to leave, play the song of passing twice to pass a day then re-enter so for every set of 3 photos you need to play the song of passing 6 times in a row. Nobody ever talks about that part of it because nobody even attempts to do it. This was changed in HD to 12 a day but I just don't like that version and it's still locked to the WIIU.

I like Resident Evil 6, it's so stupid, and completely over the top, and absolutely none of the gameplay systems work well, and the dialogue is bad, and the plot is retarded.

It's slopkino, the Battlefield Earth of horror games, my cousin and I grab some beers and play it at least once a year.
The controls are fantastic for a fast paced shooter. A John Wick-like experience. Which happens to be bad for a Resident Evil game.

Oh man, I totally forgot about this shit. That was the one thing in the game that really ticked me off. Why couldn't I just turn in all 3 photos at once?

The only part of the triforce hunt that I didn't like was having to pay tingle a small fortune just to decipher the charts. Get rid of that part and it would be great.

Not sure if this has been said yet but this opinion is almost always disagreed with:

Bethesda haven't made a good game in over 25 years (yes, I am including Morrowind in that). Last game of theirs I really liked was Daggerfall, they're okay as a publisher though.

That might be an even less popular opinion than saying Skyrim is the only good TES (it's easily the best).

I've never seen the appeal of couch co-op gaming myself.
TL;DR - the death of couch co-op/local multiplayer sucks and it's depressing, it created a lot of great social experiences for a shit-ton of people and offered an opportunity for family to bond with one another, now it's pretty much gone.
Every game is ultra serious and it doesn't help that every FPS nowadays locks content behind winning games so everyone is desperate to win at all costs. Even fucking ROCKET LEAGUE went from a "man, everyone sucks but we're having a good time" to "THAT WAS AN EASY SAVE YOU ABSOLUTE FUCKING MONG I WILL FIND WHERE YOU LIVE AND RAPE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY YOU COCKSUCKING NIGGERFAGGOT".
Co-op works a lot because it gets rid of a lot of problems of competitive. There are no "feels bad" moments, unless someone deliberately asks for them. If someone does get salty, it's their problem.

But couch gaming in general involves a lot of social skills both in and out of the game that seem to not be taught any more. eg. Going to a friends house. Which includes making yourself presentable, learning how to share, learning to take a joke and not be a salty bitch. Ignoring these basic requirements would not get you invited.

It might seem off topic, but it's like when people use their phone while driving, walking, or riding a bike, then defend it by saying "I've never bumped into anybody, it's everybody else using their phones that's the problem."

Agreed. Especially when it's their own fault (stop playing AAA slop) or the criticism is unfounded. I loved the whole "angry reviewer" thing. Classic era AVGN, Nostalgia Critic, even Linkara was fun, and I still get a chuckle out of those old episodes.

Then you have Crowbcat and his successors that will zoom in on a hotdog stand in the distance you zoom past at 100mph, and then complain the texture is low res because they can't read the menu. Then a few years later turn around and complain that every game is 500gb and crammed with 4k textures.

Roguelike
-and when you point out any of this, they blame the players who need to "git gud".

The Enclave are the best faction in the Fallout universe and are the good guys.

The Brutes are the best species in Halo. And Tartarus the Brute Chieftan is the best character in the Halo universe.

Retarded opinion time.

People are way overly negative all the time and I'm getting very tired of it. Everyone on every platform ranging from YouTube, Xitter, and even this gay forum are way too eager to start circle jerking about whatever the fuck pisses them off about whatever instead of focusing on things that they actually like or appreciate about a game. Being critical is good, but being the type of faggot to start screaming and projectile vomiting because [INSERT POLITICAL THING YOU HATE] is in your precious vidya games, swearing that you will never support anything ever made by anyone and you're pirating everything from here on out makes you look like a major retard.
As someone who has played games for 10+ years, here is a counterpoint.

Yes, there is a justification for being negative in terms of current-day gaming. Even if all the political tripe is removed and all we have are the games that people play, there is a lot of shit we can throw at modern gayming and see how it has regressed and how many features have either been removed or streamlined to cater to the lowest common denominator (i.e non-gamers). And by the way, this is entirely removing the political tripe often spewed by /pol/-fugees here so consider this a take from a vacuum.

  • Always online games where you can't play a game either in offline nor have LAN parties in (i.e Halo Infinite)
  • Games with obscene monetization, be it intrusive DLC that locks half of the game (Dragon's Dogma 2, PAYDAY 2, every single Paradox Game), locking playable characters/entities via in-game-but-purchasable-with-real-money currency (tanks in World of Tanks, planes & ships in War Thunder, mechas in Mecha Break), battle pass insanity (Apex Legends), customization locked by a large pricetag (VALORANT) or locking playable content with a gacha system that gives you A CHANCE (not a guarantee) to unlock said content (Genshin Impact and every gacha game)
  • Lack of optimization and overly huge file sizes for no other reason than dev laziness (Marvel Rivals, S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2, Call of Duty: Warzone)
  • Trend-chasing in terms of gameplay mechanics and general follow-the-leader mindsets of the average "game developers" (your average mediocre game such as FragPunk, Biomutant, Crucible and every single 2D/Metroidvania/quirky indie game ever since Undertale released)
  • The rise of Early Access as a crutch to sell an incomplete (and often times buggy) game (PAYDAY 3, Darkest Dungeon 2, InZOI, Phasmophobia, Lethal Company, Escape From Tarkov)
  • Dumbed down mechanics such as leveling, combat, skills and other concepts from the one entry of a franchise to the next (Battlefield post-Bad Company 2, Total War post-Shogun, Dragon Age post-Origins, Elder Scrolls post-Oblivion, Final Fantasy post-8 [debatable] and Deus Ex: Invisible War)
  • Bizarre dev patches and decision making that invariably destroys a game's lifespan and history via balancing issues to outright replacing the game to an incomplete state (Counter-Strike 2, Team Fortress 2 post Meet-Your-Match, Overwatch 2, old school Runescape)
  • Single-player games with bloated """content""" made to artificially extend the game's completion (Red Dead Redemption 2, Kingdom Come Deliverance II, every single Ubisoft open-world game)
  • Single-player stories that often feels like the director wants to write a movie than a game (The Last of Us, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, Death Stranding)
  • """Special Editions""" (Saints Row IV, Skull and Bones, Star Citizen)
  • Loss, streamlining and dumbing down of mechanics once present in old games (such as offline bots, stealth systems, difference in strategy and tactics)
  • And most importantly, the lack of experimentation in terms of game design and mechanics.

If you have played 10+ years of gaming and have not seen the general downward spiral of gaming as a whole, I have to either chalk up to you being blissfully unaware or downright retarded. Even if the marketing retards at E3 or the VGAs was not enough to convince you otherwise, you would notice from time to time that games have gotten bigger in both budget AND scale but have otherwise become more dumbed down and outright easier (and sometimes obnoxiously hard like Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree).

Gaming back in the 2000s was for the hardcore nerds, for people with the love of interaction in a virtual world, a break from reality. Nowadays, the commercialization of a game has led it to nothing more but a playground, not to a certain audience, but to everyone and trying to please everyone outright pleases no one.

I'm not negative because of politics. I'm negative because of the constant downward spiral that gaming as a hobby has become. And I'm absolutely fucking tired of the average joe telling me to be positive of things to come, when all I see is blurry shit smearing all over my face.

I haven't played any of the games you mentioned 🤷‍♂️

The huge file sizes are because players don't like repeating or blurry textures, and they don't like compression artifacts. You have to pay the piper with textures. Don't want to look at the weird, JPEG-like artifacts of S3 compression? You just paid a 2x-6x price in memory. The 512x512 textures are too blurry for you, you want 1024x1024? There's another 4x...16x if we go to 2048x2048. You don't like seeing the same textures many times in the same scene? There's another 4x. It blows up fast. It would be really nice if more games would do what Diablo IV did and make the ultra textures an optional install. If you're happy seeing the occasional blurry mud, you can save 66 GB on your fixed storage.

I remember Capcom being the king of on-disc DLC from the seventh generation. Marvel vs Capcom 3, Street Fighter X Tekken, I think Street Fighter IV did it too.

  • """Special Editions""" (Saints Row IV, Skull and Bones, Star Citizen)
I'm okay with those for marketing purposes. If you like a franchise and they make a "special edition" with limited physical items to go with them, go nuts. If it's just digital goodies, then I see your point.

(Finally caught up with the thread.)

Does the astroturfing with Balatro seem more suspicious than Blue Archive's astroturfing? Granted, would the degeneracy with the latter's fandom (they even get autistic with how the girls smell) make BA more or less astroturfed?
I believe the dev when he says the success was due to luck, and that he expected the game to sell 8 copies. I haven't played Balatro, but I have played Vampire Survivors, and I get why that game went viral.

Gotchas are astroturfed though. I don't know anyone who actually likes them.

How come no games use the 'Assault' mode anymore? Getting gunned down by snipers while trying to rush a castle was endless fun, being the sniper or the sniped.
I was a big fan of headquarters mode in old CoD games. The problem is that everyone defaults to big team deathmatch and nothing else gets played. Objective modes in general are superiour.

I like Resident Evil 6, it's so stupid, and completely over the top, and absolutely none of the gameplay systems work well, and the dialogue is bad, and the plot is retarded.
RE6 comes alive in mercinaries mode, where all those fancy moves become useful, and you've adapted to the games jank.

Gatekeeping is important not just because of leftists but because of the general normalfaggotry who are extremely insufferable and cant figure out basic mechanics of a video game, I see this a lot on Reddit but especially in communities with things like Elden Ring where they are asking the most basic questions that can easily be googled or figured out within 2 minutes of booting the game, these commoners dont add anything to the community and are utterly worthless people
No. There's so much stuff that's "basic" in Souls games that makes no fucking sense at all. Like in DS3 where, to get one of the good items in the game, you have to do what is essentially an out of bounds glitch move jumping off a tree to get to the rafters, then are supposed to take the phrase "Pump a Rum" to mean "drop exactly one firebomb here, go through a loading zone, then return to the rafters without going through another loading screen". I'm the retard for not understanding that "obvious" series of events I have to believe we only know about due to official guides or data mining.

Now, if you said you want to gatekeep "why can't metroid crawl!" type retards, then that's different.

it would move the industry forward, just not in a way that the industry want.
Half-Life Alyx proved this. For as much as a leap forward that game was, people were mad because it wasn't just an Ep2 map pack.

Accusations of games being "woke" is the Online Right's version of the Left calling things "racist", "sexist", or "homophobic". It's been used so many times that it has lost all meaning. For all you know, the next time they call a game "woke", it's just because some guy got pissed that he had to play as a female character who isn't fapping material. Hell, by that point, many classic games can be seen as woke, since games like KOTOR and Mass Effect cater to lesbians, games like Fallout 2 and 3 make a patriotic USA the enemy in the game, among others.

This is because you had a rise in the number of online right-leaning channels calling things out for being "woke". They kept using that term in order to garner interest and clicks. And the same effect came upon that term, the way the words "sexist", "racist", or "homophobe" were affected when you had an inflated amount of SJWs using those terms to describe things that they deemed to be problematic, in order to garner clicks. Now we're seeing online, right-wing people fall into the same trap the SJWs did, when they inflate the term and make it completely pointless. That doesn't mean the woke games went away, (KCD2 and Assassin's Creed Shadows are the most notorious examples as of late) it just means that the accusation of things having gone "woke" loses its potency the more it's used by outrage merchants to slag things that are barely woke, or things that are not at all woke, which leads to a "boy crying wolf" scenario, just as it did with the SJWs.

People who do this online are grifting cunts who just want e-fame. Woke trash does exist but it's usually very blatant. If it isn't then people should play the game themselves. Your mileage with what is "woke" may vary.

The biggest irony of people labeling games "woke" and crusading against *insert game/company here* is that most of them bought the game anyway. That should invalidate any opinion you have and if you cry that other people purchased the thing then fuck you.

Name 10 examples of this happening over the past 10 years.

Video game companies are going to invite of bunch of these right-wing creators to come in as consultants to make their games less woke, just like what happened with all the SJWs?
Is Druckmann gonna give a presentation where he shows off Halo Infinite Cortana and talk about how ugly and woke she is? Sounds cool.

Name some blatantly woke games I should stay away from and some subtly woke games that I should play for myself.

They don't need to. Companies in Asia already make games like Black Myth Wukong, First Descendant, and Marvel Rivals which are the opposite of woke.
