The Boys - An Amazon Prime adaptation of the Ennis comic series

With Rorschach; having a character with ironclad moral principles, even flawed ones, will always make them more endearing than the piles of gray morally ambiguous sludge called characters around them. Active, well-defined characters reign supreme.

Rorschach was the only one willing to expose the truth, even if it killed him, instead of leaving humanity's fate in the hands of ego-tripping pansies like Ozymandias. Human nature cannot be controlled or changed, not forever. You cannot cure conflict.
yup
People will side with genuine extremists and not the mindless "le morality relative" cuck for actually believing in things
It's just human nature to believe that there is good and there is evil, which means that even the misguided or malicious idiot who has an actual code of morals, ethics, or standards will always be the lesser of two evils when compared to someone who sees morality as subjective.

People think that they want freedom, but what they really want, is order. For good to be praised and evil to be punished. So no shit, someone with morals like Rorschach will always be admired over someone who kills innocents to create a desired result like Ozymandias.

That drove guys like Linkara insane; especially when the Watchmen film clearly picked sides and made it clear that Rorschach was the principled man.

*Technically 1940’s; it was that old school misogyny and racism Soldier Boy grew up with.
That makes it even funnier. That means it's the greatest generation that Soldier Boy comes from. You're not dealing with the average boomer warrior anymore.........he is a SUPER BOOMER!

A strategist and a soulless psychopathic suit that deals in money, marketing, and products. He’s ultimately the most powerful because of his intellect and prowess.
That's the same thing that happened with James Stillwell in the comics.

I’m wondering if his mom will return. I have a feeling the writers want the viewers to forget that Hughie and his mom basically killed three innocent people in a spectacularly retarded fashion.
Probably not. They'll have some happy ending with Starlight and Hughie, I assume.

I've heard people call invincible white people dragonball Z and I think the comparison applies. Its dogshit writing with zero concern for logic or consistency or themes or consequences or even basic cause and effect, but it has hype moments and aura and constant escelation to attempt to keep things intresting with characters that are at least midly likable with enough charm/charisma to keep you over. Its like a sloppy opera without sustainable writing but it is fun for what it is because its at least doing its own thing unlike the boys that's a 24/7 rage sesh against orange man.
God that's kinda true

However, DBZ never took itself seriously as some kind of legit superhero deconstruction or some shit with le deep themes, it's just a pure and simple show where people beat the fuck out of each other and shoot energy beams. It knew what it was.

DBZ was just action for the sake of action, with a hero that everyone can get invested in. The Boys and Invincible are all over the place.

Are we meant to sympathize with Homelander? Or hate him? Are we meant to be horrified by what Omni-Man did, or forgive him for his sins?

At least with Vegeta, he earned his forgiveness by settling down, having kids, and risking his ass for the good guys again and again. That, and even as far as the Buu saga, other characters like Piccolo flat-out told Vegeta that he will rot in hell because he was evil, while Goku will go to heaven and even retain the use of his body because he was good. He had to earn his absolution.

Nolan was just all over the fucking place. If he was going to turn that easy, he should've turned earlier and warned the Guardians of the Viltrumites. Since by that time he knows that Viltrumite powers can pass on by mating with humans, he should've worked with the Guardians and Cecil to farm more Viltrumites by having Nolan plow as many healthy human chicks as possible, so that in 20 years' time, they'd have a massive army of a thousand Viltrumites ready to overthrow Thragg and seize control of the Viltrum Empire.

I'll admit that I only watch it as a means to mindfuck myself until I get tired enough to fall asleep. The Boys is incredibly stupid.
I've been watching Invincible and despite it deserving countless criticisms, it is reasonable enough. Kind of. It's hard to do it right, so I get it; but The Boys' writers are just stupid.
Invincible at best sticks to the source material. Everything that happened in the Viltrumite War in the comics happened in the show. From the good guys destroying Viltrum, to the bad guys going incognito on Earth to repopulate.

It's funny how even the producers know that Soldier-Boy is the real draw of the show now. Kind of like how the Game of Thrones shows stopped giving a shit about the Starks and made it all about Targaryen baby-mama drama. Soldier Boy having his own show of the early Vought days is them cashing in on Jensen Ackles' performance as Soldier Boy. Kind of like how Disney gave Darth Maul his own show because he's one of the few characters that can still sell toys.

I don't know how the comics handled it, but the show is definitely going for a "both" angle.
That just makes no fucking sense. At least DBZ made it clear that Vegeta was fucking evil up until near the end. I think he only became truly good after the Buu Saga, during the transition into GT/Super.

They just canceled Gen V season three. So all of the buildup for those characters is trashed.
idk, I felt the last season did a good job tying everything together. Not sure what season 3 would even be about. If all villains die in the boys’ finale, who would there even be left to fight?

I liked the 2nd season’s villain a lot though. I thought I had nailed the twist 2 episodes in and thought it was absolute shit because it was so obvious, so I was gobsmacked when the actual twist was revealed.

I fucking despised all the ”lmao, poo-poo, pee-pee, penis, vagina” jokes and some of the actors (especially the shrinking girl and the girl supertranny actor) are absolute trash so I ain’t mad it’s cancelled.

I don't know about you guys, but personally I am completely heartbroken we don't get to see the thrilling conclusion to the story of the black chick that fights using her period blood.
Period fairy and the supertranny are credited in the upcoming 3 episodes of the boys according to IMDB. Since they made Marie Moreau out to be some kind of chosen one she’s probably going to either be crucial when it comes to killing Homelander or she’ll revive one of the main protagonists when they die. Not sure what supertranny’s gonna do though.

But by then Butcher is no longer in control over his body. The tumor as Kessler was controlling him. So Hughie mercy kills Butcher with Ryan.
I thought this was a bad plot hole this season. Billy struggled not to die from cancer all of last season and now there’s not even a cough? This would kind of make it make sense.

It's sad to look back at Erin Moriarty and realise just how badly she fucked up her face. What a fucking waste.
I thought people were overreacting when the hate train against her appearance started in season 2/3 but now it looks like she’s walking around with a permanent allergic reaction. Tragic.

- Episode is split between multiple POV chapters.
- Terror humps a Homelander doll, he tries to eats chocolate, but Hughie stops him.
- Black Noir stars in a Broadway show. The Deep kills his producer to sabotage the show. In retaliation, Black Noir II frames The Deep for an oil spill in Alaska and wipes out an entire swath of the fishes in that area. Deep goes to the oil spill and vows to kill Noir.
- Malchemical, a new character, gasses Homelander, knocking him unconscious. He and Mr. Marathon, another new superhero, then try to convince Soldier Boy to help them kill Homelander, but he refuses. Soldier Boy snaps Misha’s neck, while Homelander kills Mr. Marathon by crushing his skull after he slips on Vought baby oil and breaks his leg.
- Seth Rogen, Christopher Mintz, Kumail Nanjiani, and other celebrities are killed after Soldier Boy tricks Mr. Marathon into running through them.
- Firecracker is ordered by Sister Sage to turn on her childhood pastor, who once fed and cared for her, by falsely accusing him of being a pedophile to gain Homelander’s approval. Instead, Homelander sees her as pathetic, and kills her, and has her head mounted on a spike.

- The Deep kills Black Noir II on the podcast set by stabbing him in the throat.
- Soldier Boy confronts Bombsight at a nursing home and eventually convinces him to hand over V1. Bombsight is an immortal superhero on V1 who fell in love with a moral woman. He's at the nursing home where she is getting treated for cancer. Soldier Boy depowers Bombsight, frying the V1 out of his system, allowing him to die alongside his wife. .
- Sister Sage miscalculates Soldier Boy’s hatred of Homelander. Instead, Soldier Boy gives Homelander V1, bonding over their shared love for Stormfront.
- Homelander burns a hole into his own arm with his heat vision in order to inject V1. The Boys witness him taking the serum.
- Butcher and the Boys upon realizing Homelander has taken V1 all flee. This is Butcher's scene from the trailers yelling "Run!".

- Homelander arrives at the White House and kills President Calhoun. He declared himself President of the United States and world.
- A new Shifter working for Oh Father captures both Hughie and Butcher, leading to a scene involving Kessler in some capacity. The new Shifter is outsmarted by Hughie, and Butcher eventually kills them.
- Dogknott and Sheline are killed by M.M. and Starlight.
- Marie and Cate (from Gen V) provide a safe house to civilians. Starlight and The Boys rescue them and other resistance fighters.
- Sister Sage works with The Boys to use a uranium machine on Kimiko, attempting to replicate Soldier Boy’s powers.
- When Homelander discovers their location, Sister Sage and Kimiko hide while Frenchie sacrifices himself to draw Homelander away.

I hate that this show went from mocking the MCU to doing an extended universe unironically. There's already been several references and on-screen character appearances that have no context without watching Generation V, and I've not watched Generation V. "You have to watch these other franchises to understand what's going on" is Godawful.

Last season more or less explained it, Billy's cancer is basically the Venom symbiote. He gets sicker and sicker while he tries to fight it and cling to nobler principles, but when he gives in to his monstrous side, the cancer works to support him. It's just then immediately undone with him once again showing care for his woife's son.

Yeah it fucking sucks. With the MCU it started feeling like you had to do homework to understand all the references.

I watched the first three episodes of this season and had no idea what they were talking about when they mentioned Sage getting dumped by someone. That’s not really pertinent to the overall plot, but if actual characters from GenV are gonna pop up in The Boys you’re probably gonna need to watch a recap.

At the start of this season Hughie or someone asks Butcher ”Hey, how come you ain’t sick no more” and he replies ”I stopped fighting the cancer so I’m all good now”. It can’t be that well explained if they need to throw this line in. To me it felt like a haphazard way of tying up a loose end from the previous season but then again, I saw season 4 over a year ago so I might just have forgotten.

I thought it was a really good episode. Having the overlapping ministorylines meant it didn't run into pacing issues. Personal thoughts on each one:

Firecracker - she's a great actress, and I've really enjoyed her depiction of a true believer suddenly foundering once a line has been crossed. Very interesting they showed her struggling so much of it but still deciding to completely sell out in the end; kind of knew that ending for her was coming (and adds into the theme that even literally being worshiped doesn't fill the void for Homelander). Highlight of the episode.

Black Noir - replacement Black Noir is still a novel character and I enjoyed it. Didn't seem to serve much purpose other than amping up the tension between Black Noir and Deep, and underscoring Deep's spiral off the deep end; I assume it'll have a payoff.

The dog - I got the point of this thread, which was to establish that Butcher would let Hughie use V1 on Kimiko and Starlight. But it was boring. I don't care about Butcher's inner turmoil (that episode that had loads of flashbacks of his childhood did nothing for me), and it being thrown into stark relief over his dog of all things didn't help, I guess that Becka well had run dry. Other than that, it was just reiterating that MM is nihilistic now and oh no, Kimiko and Frenchie aren't compatible because Kimiko likes her steaks burned with ketchup while Frenchie doesn't notice and just keeps cooking them medium rare. I could have done without all the dog sex jokes, too, and the attempts at making you panic for the dog because he ate chocolate. Low point of the episode

Sister Sage - enjoyable bit of character work and Ashley is always hilarious. Again underscoring that Sister Sage is nihilistic, and moving the plot forward that her end goal is total genocide which is setting off Ashley (and Bashley)'s latent conscience.

Soldier Boy - obviously moved the plot forward both in terms of V1 and establishing where Soldier Boy's loyalties lies. Generally quite good, except for the awkward stunt casting of the rest of Supernatural and then Seth Rogan. It took me out a bit that Malchemical was able to temporarily take down Homelander so easily when previously he's supposed to be impossible to control. Hearing Hollywood try to exploit the current situation was a nice idea, but would have been infinitely improved if Seth Rogan wasn't there, and this mix of casting celebs as themselves and as characters was confusing (it wasn't until he said "I'm yoked now" that I realised Kumail Nanjiani was playing Kumail Nanjiani). The fight scene where Soldier Boy kept using the party guests as obstructions to a coked up Marathon Man was pretty funny.

Best example Alan Moore and Rorschach.

It will always make me happy that Alan Moore is eternally butthurt over his audience connecting with Rorschach more than any other character. It's hilarious how closely it mirrors Kripke seething over Homelander fans.

Btw, if you want to read a story about "what if Superman was a dick?", just read this:

It's very good and would make a fun sci-fi adaptation.

I dunno how anyone could not understand why Rorschach is beloved. He's a schizophrenic racist, sure, but he's also the only guy who can put aside his ideological issues and racial biases for the sake of doing the right thing. That's why he dies. The ones who live are the ones who can go on knowing the horrible truth behind everything, letting go of any notion that they're able to do anything about it. He couldn't.

Because the left is the side of ultimate ideological purity. Even if he does the right thing, he still can't be supported because he's an evil racist fascist and must be destroyed.

and didn't that alan moore interview thing turn out not to exist?

Oh, so this is the 'Give all the characters we're gonna kill off but never developed some last minute character development so you'll feel bad' anthology episode.

Funny how, as soon as we need to make Firecracker sympathetic, she just completely drops the rest of her character and suddenly starts being framed as more competent despite spending all of last season just being a retarded stereotype. Hey, anyone remember that she preyed on an underaged boy while she was a camp councillor? The pastor who raised her seems pretty comfortable with her despite this being public information. Maybe she was right about him having pedo-vibes.

I like Black Noir, he's fun. I hate the Deep and I hope Black Noir kills him.

Sister Sage is forced to enlist Ashely's help to find out what Soldier Boy is doing because she lost her super smart powers this season.

Sister Sage reveals her true motives of wanting to get all life on Earth killed in a supe-human war so she can read her books in peace, and... somehow this convinces Ashley to help her.

Stan knew a lead on the V1 this entire time, but still sent the Boys to Fort Harmony.

Homelander and Soldier Boy are forced to endure Seth Rogan, Kumail Nanjiani, and other cameos I don't recognise outside of the teen villain from Kickass.

Somehow these writers who've explicitly written for and about Homelander forget that he has super hearing when they start shit talking him from across the room.

One of the gang reveal that they can easily knock Homelander out by breathing on him.

Chad Soldier Boy kills all the cameos for fucking with his boy.

Underwhelming death for Firecracker, that little stab doesn't even look like it'd kill a supe.

Guys, why are they turning Homelander into Chris Chan? I can't be the only one who's noticed this. Like all the incest jokes, it being heavily implied that Stormfront is his mother (Home-Chan did what?), going bat shit insane with visions and seeing things, believing his god, trying to transition, basically being someone who's meant to be laughed at, a bunch of people trying to manipulate him for their own gain (whether it be Sage for her civil war, or the black pasture guy) as idea guys or bella, having tons of rage induced meltdowns, keeps on getting locked in rooms which he stated happened to him as a childhood with his babysister, and is clearly mentally ill

So, the world smartest nigger's plan to obtain peace and quiet is to kill everyone, plunge the world into global conflict, THEN isolate in a bunker.
It has the same big brain energy as setting yourself on fire to get warm during winter.
