DSP "real criticism" thread

  • 🔧 Actively working on site again.
He needs to give up on let's plays that span out 200 parts on YouTube.
Nobody but a few people will watch a raw commentary video that lasts 10-20 minutes anymore, and his view count reflects that.

Stop rocking back and four when you're talking its fucking annoying.

Edit your videos nobody cares about raw unedited content.

It doesn't take 8+ hours to edit a playthrough, its gameplay its not like you're doing the VFX for a TV show.

Number one thing (and I'm sure it has already been covered: he needs to change up his streaming schedule. It's clear the Day 1/AAA streaming schedule isn't setting the world on fire, and if you're actually interested in expanding beyond the core base you need to realize that people come back to repeat games (Minecraft, PUBG, Destiny PVP, Hearthstone, etc.) and not to watch you necessarily play a game to completion.

Expanding on the above, you need a god damned predictable viewing schedule. "Fight Club Fridays", "Super Saturday" (where he plays games/consoles with Super in their title). . .these are not difficult things to think up and make his Week In Preview far easier to get fan involvement in and let's people know who are checking out you channel: This is what I am working on, here's what you can expect (like when I play new releases)

Speaking of new fans: the toxicity is just too much. I'm not even talking about towards "detractors." The general gameplay toxicness is just. . .unbecoming. You're a grown ass man and very often whining about a VIDEOGAME. "We're just here to have fun!" Really? Because it often doesn't seem that way. If a game is terrible or has flaws, call it out. Grousing about it like a petulant child especially when you are having difficulty with the game is such an ugly look and is a sign that you're not as clever as you think you are. People can be charming and completely SHIT on a game at the same time.

Finally:

Stop rocking back and four when you're talking its fucking annoying.

Edit your videos nobody cares about raw unedited content.

It doesn't take 8+ hours to edit a playthrough, its gameplay its not like you're doing the VFX for a TV show.

This should be your Sunday evening. First, no one buys that it takes HOURS of work uploading start/stop clips of your gameplay recordings. It doesn't, and we know you just slap a summary title on these recordings after you click "snip." KOGaming was actually an impressive (in relative terms) attempt at revamping that format, but because you didn't see IMMEDIATE explosive change in monetary fortunes, you gave up. You have no patience for anything that isn't an automatic success simply believing that if an idea is good, it'll have immediate returns for you. The Beatles weren't The Beatles on Day 1 (well I mean they were).

. . .and finally: No one cares about your drama. Unless it has real impact on your streaming persona (e.g. PDP addressing his use of "nigger") you shouldn't be talking about it. It doesn't humanize you or make you seem more real. We all have "struggles" (and here I will not finger-wag on whether doing laundry is a personal struggle) however talking about them constantly has, it would seem, even sapped the energy of some of your regulars. Stop it. Now I'll admit, I watch some Twitch streamers and they have some epic pre-streams, but they're just waiting for people to show up; for example one HS player I watch will oftentimes play the piano or directly interact with the chat. Cheers and the like are not the focus of that. It seems you do the pre-stream specifically because it's a good source of non-gameplay cheering. Honestly, imagine you're a random person bored on Twitch. You have 10 seconds to grab their attention, and you're talking about how difficult it is make laundry.

He need to stop masturbating in front of children IMMEDIATELY!!

. . .well done. A clever is you.

He'll never be as fun / entertaining to watch as (for example & IMHO, as well.) SomeCallMeJohnny / SuperGaminhBros. / BrainScratchCommentaries, so it's already too late for him, indefinitely.

There is nothing I can suggest that hasn't already been, other than for Phil to give up and get a real job, already. One where he learns to not talk so much (shite that he can't really back up...) and take proper criticism for once - although doing just THAT and not badmouthing games he clearly sucks at would be a great place to start.

Phil just needs to hold himself accountable; that's it. If you're accountable for your actions and to your fan base, most these complaints would be resolved or not matter anymore. That's all he has to do.

This expanded to stop taking personal offense over [joking/teasing/making fun of] in general; not just as a person but as a streamer. He shows himself to be thin skinned when everything jabbing at him results in a twitch ban followed by a two minute chiding at his fan base and ends with an extra 10 minutes added to the Pre-stream monologue. Also, by taking offense of these things, he just enables and empowers the people that make fun of him. You're 35 going on 36, this stuff should not even cross your mind.

The first step he could do, whilst probably a gargantuan effort for Phil, is just stop taking shit so seriously.

Someone chimes in with a 25 bit troll cheer and he flies off the handle calling someone a functional exceptional individual and a brain dead idiot. He doesn't have the wit to subtly shut someone down - it's just WAH WAH WAH FUCK YOU.

Seriously, he might not become 'likeable' but he might become tolerable and less easy to hate.
Honestly, this can not be stated enough. Grow a bit of a thicker skin. Trolls look for people to freak out, it’s not as fun when someone laughs it off. There are other problems with his streams and commentary, but honestly he’s at least treading water, there is no mass exodus of fans, and from what I’ve seen his chat is actually able to relax and have fun without big bad Vidar around to rain on the parade.

I and a lot of people watch Twitch to see some gameplay and make a decision on if we want to buy it. DSP is mainly known right now as the dude who “scratched his leg” on stream or “how do I use rations?” but I think if somebody who knew him for this stumbled on a stream to see a fun, chill stream with no drama he can change his reputation pretty quick.

I was recently reminded of his sperging over Shadow of War. Honestly there should be a thread of all the times where he says anyone who has an opinion differing from his has an ulterior motive.

For instance, take how he treated Shadow of War. He wasn't even at the point where the game became a hard grind, and yet he was acting like he experienced it first-hand and said all the people complaining about it were just looking for a quick buck from YouTube. He "liked" the game (up until the point where everyone else was talking about, then he rage quit) and anyone who decided to boycott it was an immature idiot or thirsty for views.

Now rewind a bit and he was playing MvC: Infinite. He despised this game. Mainly because he was bad at it (like all fighting games released in the past few years), but he kept saying shit to delegitimize it as a fighting game. And then when anyone said some people actually enjoyed it and said they were experiencing none of the problems that Phil was, what was his response? "Those people only defend the game because they need your views to pay their bills." It was the most hardcore projecting I had ever witnessed, even from him. And then he did the Shadow of War thing, doing exactly what he accused other streamers/content creators for.

He's such a blatant hypocrite, and has this holier-than-thou attitude about everything. So my advice to Phil is this:

Stop acting like your word is law, and stop acting like anyone who disagrees has an ulterior motive. It really makes you look like a liar and a despicable person. And if you must argue with other people's opinions, attack the argument. Not the person.

He would do better as a vloging channel with game content on the side. He's really bad at catching on to what works and let's his ego get in the way. The TIHYDP is a great example that Slowbeef tried to educate him on. DSP should of just swallowed his pride and play along with the TIHYDP and expand his channel with them. He's like a fat hamster on a treadmill going nowhere. He goes hard at streaming and putting out videos but they're boring as fuck and the volume is ridiculous.

Phil would benefit greatly if he did:
  • Embrace he is forever a lolcow and just play games that make him rage for viewers
  • Stop blaming the devs (as funny as it is to be mad at a game cause bad, ragging on the makers makes you a complete asshat minus very specific games)
  • Stream longer. This means cutting prestreams from 1+ hours down to 5-10 minutes for gaming news ONLY.
  • Don't let chat backseat game. Make it a bannable offense so he can experience the game fully (THIS IS THE BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT HE COULD DO)
  • Make exclusive stream segments and upload clips of said segments to improve viewership from his YT to Twitch
  • Stop banning people because he gets mad at video games.

Throw in the fucking chips, declare bankruptcy. Forfeit both properties and fire sell them. Consolidate all your debt.

Go move to some shitty town (with fiber internet) and RENT a menial property. Buy a shitty car if you have to.

Then you'll actually be able to spend the money you make.

Phil's choice of times that he streams seriously need to be reworked.
IIRC Phil generally streams from about noon to 5pm and 7pm to 10pm roughly. As far as the West Coast market they basically get 1 short after dinner stream. The East Coast Market is targeted alright (and a good portion of his audience) with 1st stream occurring 3pm to 8pm for them and 2nd stream 10pm to 1am. For the UK and European market Phil's streams occur 8/9pm to 1/2am, and 3/4am to 6/7am. For the Australian market Phil's streams occur 6/7am to 11am/noon, and 1/2pm to 4/5pm. The East Coast market is the only thing he really hits well at all.

If he streamed 8am to noon, and 2pm to 6pm:
for the UK/Euro market this would be 4/5pm to 8/9pm, and 10/11pm to 2/3am;
the East Coast market 11am to 3pm, and 5pm to 9pm;
the Australian market 1/2am to 5/6am, and 7/8am to 11am/noon (he wasn't hitting this market well anyway, and if he wanted to he could stream 9pm to 1am once or twice a week 3pm to 7pm for Aussies)
He would hit the European market much better, the West coast the same amount, and the East Coast slightly less.

He really needs to start gaming the system better with Twitch and play popular games that his current fans are interested in if he actually wants his stream to grow. He is also doing the same thing with Twitch he did with YouTube and refusing to learn anything more than the bare minimum to be a contributer on the site. He needs to be proficient with all aspects of chat: he apparently doesn't know how to hold a vote in chat, his commands are shit and I never see anyone use them, he has no chat currency, etc. . .
He needs to watch other streamers because he has absolutely no idea what a Twitch stream looks like or general practices. His current attempts at being a Twitch streamer are basically being a YouTube LP'er who plays whatever he feels like and just happens to livestream it now. I have never seen him having a good time with chat, the only thing he likes is when chat occasionally gives his narcissistic ego an asspat or two. He's so worried about his streams looking good for YouTube unedited that they are shit when they are happening for Twitch viewers.

Mmm, this is long enough. Mostly change his stream times and learn how to make a stream fun and engaging.

Start being transparent on the things you should be transparent on. Stop being transparent on the things you shouldn't be transparent on. This is the source of 90% of your problems, not detractors. They are only taking your dumb TMI mistakes and making them blow up in your face.

He needs to stop hyping things by saying "people are really looking forward to x or y". Imagine someone heard that about his recent patrons' choice failure and checked his stream out. That's a guaranteed person who will never sub. They'll see how he treats something that he apparently knows people are 'excited' for and shits all over it. Why would they ever sub to that kind of behavior or donate to enable that. He only sets himself up for further failure and humiliation because it seems he just assumes people are excited for whatever but nobody actually gives a shit.

I made this post in the megathread about DSP's offer of an "olive branch" that he made in January. It was more than 3000 words long on one of his prestreams so I can't even recall whether I noticed it or not.
  • DSP's "olive branch" was basically some blanket expectation that the entire "detractor community" who are all individual people who do their own thing would fall into a line of "good behavior"
Sorry DSP, I understand what you tried to do but that's not how you deal with trolls and people trying to fuck with you, you will always have people that go the extra step in trying to fuck with people. You really need to go and look at some other internet personalities and how they deal with da trolls because whatever you were trying with your "olive branch" was never going to work. Before you can change anyone else you have to change yourself and stop reacting the way you do, and its not only how you react, its also the way you interact.

Here's a good starting point: stop deleting every fucking thread people make on your forums and stop blocking every single person on Twitter. It's an exceptionally terrible way of dealing with things. Stop calling people morons and idiots when you're asking the world for help because of your own mistakes (no one cares about your tax attorney screwing you over, you're in this position because you never listen to anyone and spend any money you have on dumb shit, that's on you).

And as for your complaining about people trying to "dig up dirt" on Kat? Your own fans warned you repeatedly that this would happen and it'd happen for anyone who is as controversial as you are. I even kept warning you (whether you read here or not) that this would end up happening and you chose to ignore it all.

If you didn't have a habit of insulting people and being so condescending through your entire "10 year legacy" and much earlier you wouldn't have to deal with the toxic environment that you yourself created. You talk shit constantly and then when people talk shit back you block, ban and delete which only makes them want to talk shit and harm you even more.

"Be nice to those you meet on the way up because you will meet them on the way down"

If you didn't try to shit on every possible person then you wouldn't have one of the most dedicated groups of people that hate you in existence.

And because it can't be stated enough, I will also do it because this is some immensely important factor when you want to be a likeable streamer, which you (Phil) always get wrong. Learn to not be triggered by every little trollish thing and take it with a joke. Apparently you can't even take some harmless bad words of an 11 year old girl, no, you gave it back 10-fold for no good reason. Some things can and should be laid to rest without mentioning, like an intelligent adult would do.

Have you ever heard of the phrase: Don't feed the trolls? You do it constantly by imitating and insulting people which throws a very big shadow on you. This behaviour doesn't protect you or your channel, but people (especially the new ones) will wonder what's wrong with you for being so triggerable.
Try to approach your viewers with some respect, regardless if you think they are true fans or detractors and regardless of what they say. Not everything is ment to harm you, and even if: Calm down, don't let it escalate, do some street-smart here. Nothing can happen to you because people write words. And words are just that; they are what you make out of them. And sadly you decided to form them into a gun to your head.

People would probably start to like you if you could turn some criticism or trolling into a joke about yourself. Maybe they would see that you are actually a cool person because you can laugh about yourself without any sarcastic undertone. People like to watch streamers with a positive attitude, who enjoy themself and what they do, who have the impression the guy is a happy dude. Phil, you can get rid of a lot of detractors with that, honestly.
Don't forget: The stream is all about YOU and if YOU are unable to have fun, nobody has fun. See the internet more like a friend, not an enemy.

So originally I was going to post this in the 'why is he bad at games' thread but it expanded.

Lets looks at your problems from a different angle Philbert.

Age (slower reaction times)
Poor physical health (overweight, eating poorly, no exercise, extremley sedentry lifestyle)
Poor mental health (social isolation, depression, NPD left untreated)
Gaming set up (tv far away from where he is, tv is at an angle, console gaming)

Gonna powerlevel here for a second but I'm in a program to treat chronic fatigue and they have tackled every one of those things (besides age) AND provided me with extremely easy methods of treating every one of those issues and I can be a tired, lazy fuck.

Phil, if you're reading this (and you are), I will legitimately send you every document I have been provided with, with exercises (that are low intensive for people with CFS), dietary suggestions (that are unbelievably easy, 20 mins of easy cooking tops of basic foods), yoga program (stretches and breathing exercises) and physio advice (including for bad backs since i have one) and all you have to do is ask. Give a shoutout or tweet something, fuck it I'll hear about it. 1 hour a day to increase the quality of your life 10fold. That improvement will improve your gaming, your business (but not a business) and your whole outlook on life. From that point, a lot of other DSPositive things will flow (detractors will have less to hang onto for example). I've been at this just a few weeks and its made a HUGE difference to me. Imagine if someone who didnt have CFS did these things, think of what they could achieve.

Your gaming set up is cancer. Sit straight on, don't slouch and use a mouse+keyboard so you can fucking aim in your games. A new tv might help, but thats the last improvement to your setup since you're in financial trouble.

Then go to my post history, find my post about your prestreams and do that.

You're welcome.
