Remember how Chris thought disabled folks and other people with autism were "windows to hell"? That would be his life, 24/7, surrounded by people unfit to take care of themselves or live in society. That sort of setting is always horrific; you can have the best care in the world, but the human misery around you is still present in all those sad, sick people.

Personally I'm kinda hoping he gets put under house arrest. I believe that's a perfectly fitting punishment, to have him sealed away with Barb. Chris has shown himself to have become completely unstable, paranoid, and violent, and its over the most ridiculous freaking thing imaginable.

But Barb is why he is how he is. I will tell you what he needs. He needs to go into something like JobCorps or the Army. Yeah he's a fat lump whiner, but you put him in a position where he has to work harder than ever, he will develop pride in a hard day's work. The best feeling in the world is coming home from a 20 hour work day. Once he sees what real work is and gets a regimen, he would be better. Not fine, but better.

In the event that Chris is charged with and convicted of any of the number of potentially applicable crimes mentioned in this thread, is there any possibility that he might be sentenced to house arrest or something similar rather than sent to jail? Given Chris's overall demeanor and general lack of comprehension of social norms, I don't think it would be difficult for a lawyer (public defender or otherwise) to argue that Chris might well be in actual physical danger in a jail setting. Would a court consider this, or would he simply be shipped off to jail regardless?

One part of me wants him to go to jail so he maybe, just maybe finally understands that pulling the autism card does not protect from the law/prosecution. He got lucky with the whole Snyder thing back then.

I initially thought this too. Barb is a toxic presence in his life, and basically the whole time I've been here I've stated over and over that I wished he would just leave. I got more bummed out as I saw the year progress with him adopting more and more of her sick mannerisms and attitudes. I did want him to leave though, and I feel that is the only hope he has at getting his life together.

But instead of focusing on improving his wreckage of a life, he revels in his current situation and would rather go completely mental over blue arms, to the point of actually committing a violent act.

When it gets to the point where he is willing to assault a random person with no provocation, it is clear that something must be done. Jail or getting institutionalized are both pretty severe, though. While I do want Chris to face the consequences of his actions, I really don't want him to end up locked away in jail.

A period of house arrest, however? That would be a completely fitting punishment for Chris, and force him to face an actual instance of responsibility for his actions (well, in theory).

I don't want to sound like an asshole. I just want Chris to realize that he cannot act this way, and to maybe force him to grow as a person as a result.

Assuming that charges are pressed against him for assualt with pepper spray which has a nasty minimum sentence, can Chris be found not-guilty by reason of insanity? The burden of proof falls on the defendant in that case to prove that they are insane (i.e. not being able to hold responsibility for their actions due to mental illness) and Chris is hardly a mentally insane person. Autistic, sure. Moronic, myopic, asinine etc. , I suppose. But he at least understands that his actions have consequences, even if he tilts the story heavily in his favor. He can perform most of the basic trappings of adulthood- read, write, drive, graduate from high school and community college. There isn't much here for his hypothetical defense to argue that he dosen't understand the consequences of his actions, although sadly it would probably be better if he was found insane and placed in a group home, because when Barb kicks it he's likely to squander his financial assets into homelessness.

I hate to say it, but incarceration for an indeterminate amount of time might be best for Chris. It would put him in touch with mental health services and provide him better shelter than what he has currently. The meals would be more nutritious, too.

I'm not sure how self-defense work in Virgina, however there is general a subjective element to it so were I defending Chris I would attempt to agure Self-defense. I think it weak but it all he really has
