...I think this tells me everything I need to know.
i doubt it
Good taste and actual truth, right there. Not even BEST CHARACTER Greg can save this show (SU), let alone match up to the likes of a true classic like A:TLA. That's just honest to God FACT.
LOL

Greg should have been the main character and the show would have been way more heartwarming if it had just been about a single dad trying to raise his freakishly overpowered son.

That sounds like... It could have been as good as Regular Show, but with a better concept and approach to execution to avoid too much repetition (that Regular Show did suffer from after awhile, despite still being a good show, IMHO.).

As it is, I feel like Greg is kind of getting the short end of the stick in Future. And if the rumors are true, it’s not the end of his torture.
This thread is priceless :story:
I’m not going to claim Regular Show is the pinnacle of animation (the pointless love triangle will forever piss me off) but it could still be pretty good and it had one of the best endings, if not the only good ending, for a modern animated show. It helps that it focused more entertaining than preaching.
If you find people having different opinions than you and not licking SU’s boots entertaining...more power to you I guess?

Oh gee, given the people on Kiwi Farms hate gays, lesbians and trans people in general, why do you even bother talking about SU. You guys freaked out and said some very nasty things about Shep from SU Future
A sizable portion of our userbase are gay, lesbian or trans. Lurk moar.

Shep is a shit character with an ugly design and no personality that was shoved into the show just for the writers to be able to say they had a black enby character and check off that box. (Same as when they said all the gems are nonbinary while all having super feminine appearances and are called she, except for fusions where Steven is involved). Shep was also a show of bad writing since they threw out all the Lars/Sadie stuff that had been built up since the beginning of the show for the sake of pairing her up off-screen with a non-entity. I'm not even a shipper and I think that was a cop-out.

As for the show ending, it's definitely time for it too. There are elements of it I enjoy, but pieces really started flying off in the last couple arcs as they rushed through a lot of important plot points. A lot of the townie episodes could have been ditched to give more time to the important stuff, but everyone knows that by now. I don't hate it, but it's a deeply flawed show in terms of pacing and filler.

Actually, just while I'm on a roll shilling ATLA, the comparisons between protagonists are actually pretty hilarious.

Both Aang and Steven are high-powered pacifists in nature and are shown to be extremely compassionate and not eager to fight. Except Aang realizes that sometimes you can't deal with evil people by making a bunch of pretty speeches and there will come a time when you need to fight. You don't have to kill or maim someone but you need to match physical strength with physical strength. It's not done out of love for fighting or bullshit toxic masculinity or whatever the fuck tumblr says to keep men from acting like men. It's done out of a sense of protecting loved ones and taking on destructive forces that refuse to listen to reason.

Compare this to Steven's plight where he barely ever has to get physical, said fighting either being extremely brief or presented as destructive and harmful to himself and others, and he gets away with stopping eons of war by whining about love and throwing out sappy one-liners. And here we are in the very last crop of episodes and Steven is spiraling out of control instead of recognizing his responsibilities, braving through the emotional burden without making it about him, taking charge of the security of the world, or ultimately having the maturity to not collapse under pressure. In Season 3 of ATLA, Aang was nervous af about his ability to beat the Fire Lord and there were even times when he doubted himself. But he didn't outright self-destruct under the stress like Steven currently is. And he recognized that he could still be compassionate while still physically fighting for what's right.

And I get that SU is a different kind of show with a different kind of message but sometimes, fighting and mercy go hand in hand in order to protect what you love. Sometimes, it's okay to fight, especially when you know that you don't have to be brutal or malicious about it. It's about being an adult and standing up for others and what you believe in. It's okay to show mercy as well--as long as you know that sometimes there will come times when you can't talk your way out of a major threat. Aang demonstrated that far better than Steven ever will and that's ultimately why this show is a complete shitshow in terms of its themes and character development.

Speaking of Greg, doesn't it seem for a show that's heralded as being "nice", the Gems sure aren't nice to Greg.

It's cuz he's a Straight! White! Male! REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

But in all seriousness, Greg is the only consistently good thing about the show, and the only character other than Spinel with any kind of charm or appeal. The fact that the gems act like assholes to Greg and take him for granted only makes him more appealing.

Really?, on a forum where gay people are called fags and faggots constantly?, where lesbians are referred to as dykes?, where trans people are referred to as trannies and troons all the time. Where every racist/abliest slur you can think of is used willy nilly?.........yeah try harder defending your disgusting behaviour

I’m actually going to play some serious devil’s advocate here: the townies aren’t actually bad. As individual characters, they range from okay to entertaining to actually having some untapped potential (Ronaldo being curious about the Gems and investigating them, Vidalia being one of the few humans to befriend a Gem). The problem is the episodes they’re in are no different from slice of life shows we’ve seen before done better, which is distracting in a show full of magic and aliens. If the humans were better integrated with the Gem stuff, the show would be so much more interesting but the closest we got was them attending Garnet’s wedding.

You just summed up why I hate the current direction of Steven’s arc. People keep going “Oh it’s realistic! He’s a normal teenager! He’s been through so much!” Yet it was established that Steven was mature and he could handle what life could throw at him; they threw all that away to give a PSA on mental health.
The leaked audio implies Greg’s van is destroyed again. Meanwhile, there’s a rumor saying Steven will leave Beach City for good, leaving Greg behind. Combined with losing his famous hair and the band he was managing, nothing is going right for Greg.

I am a faggot, ma'am. I can't bring myself to care if someone tells a fag joke on the internet. Go outside.

Oh, yeah, a lot aren't terrible characters, it's just the amount of focus they get that's the problem. I wish they could have blended the gem/human stuff together more. It's kind of weird how little they seemed to care about huge things like a massive spaceship hand crashing on their beach.

I don't like how they're framing Steven bottling his emotions/acting more aggressively as a sign of toxic masculinity. I've read too many tumblr thinkpieces with this interpretation and it's starting to annoy me. If that's the direction they're going in, I'll be pissed as shit. Especially since so many of the other characters did the exact same thing and were forgiven in less than two seconds. In a good story, Steven's growing assertiveness and keeping his internal emotional turmoil in check would be seen as a sign of maturity and self-control. The progression between a vulnerable boy and a man who has enough inner strength to know how to deal with his problems on a controlled and healthy level. The fact that Steven is almost a grown adult at this point and seems to be moving backwards in development is so stupid on a storytelling level since this is the literal last act of the series.

Toxic masculinity is a stupid af concept btw. I say this as a woman who has been around one too many toxic women.

Yep, gays, lesbians, and trans people never use those terms. Nope, never ever. Also, this site is for big boys and girls who aren't afraid of mean words on the internet.

Aw man that's unfortunate. Greg is like the only character I truly like, plus he deserves some good times.
