The Final Fantasy Thread

Somebody might have dug into it, but in case anyone thought Aeris VA sucked...well, it could be because she pretty much has barely voice acted.

...I'll admit it. She's kind of cute. Certainly cuter than I'd expected.

And here for those of you who want to play the sub vs. dub game

Not sure. I asked that myself a few days ago.

Wonder ho
I thought she was one of the better VAs. Certainly better than almost all Aeris VAs have been, who all fall into the "wispy fae" valley, unless they're really experienced. Cloud's VA is kinda one note, Barrett is a blacksploitation character (which I like), and Tifa's is good though I think she is just doing her normal voice.

Get ready for [Tifa's Father] to have an expanded role. Oh boy and [Cloud's Mom] is probably going to have major play. I'm sure we'll learn all about their tumultuous past. She probably rented her empty house to Zack's parents or some gay shit.

Corel? Totally useless since (as others have said) Dyne has already been written into a tiny box in the corner thanks to Barret's apparently incompetence and Shin-Ra's super ultimate evilness. We already had a fight with Jenova so what purpose does the ship from Junon to Coasta del Sol serve anymore? Gonga will be relegated to the late-game huge materia quest unless they change that up, too. And are we really going to have Cid beat the shit out of his wife for sport? That will make him more evil than Shin-Ra in the eyes of the cat ear crowd.

How the fuck are they going to handle Cid?

And Bugenhagen... that dude is entirely useless now. Between Cloud and Aeris, they have all of his power and ability and more. Might as well nuke Cosmo Canyon but you can't because of the construction worker subplot where he fixes your Shin-Ra Model X. I bet you by the end of this that Meteor doesn't even fall on Midgar anymore. It's going to crash down on Cosmo Canyon. Mark it.
I forgot about Bugenhagen. Cid will just be kind of a dismissive asshole to Shera. If they weren't willing to show Tseng, a bad guy, hitting Aeris on screen then we can assume they're dialing back "aggression against women" everywhere.
Every time I think about this game I like it less. They just really blew their load and misunderstood their own property. I honestly think they didn't even write the full story now, they just wrote part 1. It would explain why it became "EPIC" by the end and they made such bizarre choices about screen time. I read an article that they tried to balance screen time between our heroines to avoid the love triangle debate being heated. Which is just silly, that debate will never not be a trashfire, because it's not unfair to give Aeris more screen time when she's gonna fucking die halfway through the game. They probably forgot about Dyne and what it's supposed to mean, they just thought "hey we can't have AVALANCHE be the bad guys" when writing the first bombing. And they assume people know the story well, which even fans do not as my own forgetfulness attests imo, so they think they can add a brand new metaplot on top of it.

Like I remember rumors that it took them forever to do even Reactor 1 right, which definitely leads me to think they're pulling a Sequel Trilogy level of arbitrariness in development.

If you look at Tifa's suspender straps, it looks like there are remnants from when her tits were bigger since it doesn't line up properly, lol

So, how badly did Square Enix fuck up FFVII Remake? Hearing a lot of different opinions on it, though most do seem to complain about the plot, or rather what they changed about it.

It appears as if Nomura and his pal decided to completely gut the plot and the characters to do their own fanfiction with time travel, ghosts and alternate universes. They simplified the characters too, from what I've heard and other plot points like The Mako Reactor. Also Sephiroth appeared too early.

I fully expect Nomura to shove Versus XIII references in somewhere down the line cause he's still salty about being removed from the project. Don't spend 6 or so years procrastinating about what your game's gonna look like (Especially don't make it a musical, I'm serious look it up.) and for the love of god, don't waste company money doing so!

Considering Kingdom Hearts 3 seemed to be a total clusterfuck as well, (Don't get me started on Verum Rex, Nomura even recreated one of the Versus XIII trailers, shot for shot in the DLC for KH3.) I don't even know how Nomura still has a job at SE after the debacles he's been involved in the last decade.

Kind of telling that the best FF games in the recent past is an Online MMO that was salvaged from a complete dumpster fire (FFXIV) and a chibified RPG mixed with elements from monster collector games and featuring the who's who of FF. (World Of Final Fantasy).

Hearing that Reno and Ardyn's Japanese VA passed is quite sad though. Ardyn's my favourite FF villain imo. So dickish, yet sympathetic at the same time. 55 isn't that old either. Sincere condolences.

All of people's complaints about the story are overblown, referencing blink-and-you-miss-them easter eggs or a few brief moments in the finale. The game is not a mess. It is a coherent and faithful remake of the original that expands on certain elements of the world while nevertheless being a compelling and focused story.

The only people who are mad about Remake are the autistic purists who expected nothing more than a graphical update of the original... and the equally autistic weebs who hold a vendetta against Nomura for reasons I don't think any normal person can understand.

Well, I did say from what I've heard. If it isn't as bad as some say, I'll take that on the chin. Probably won't get it until it's on sale. (I don't have much money to spare.) Unfortunately, this is Square Enix we're talking about, they're bound to mess up something at some point. And bear in mind, this is only the first part of the remake project, which also kind of puts a damper on buying it. I'm sure gameplay wise it's strong as FF has ever been.

As for Nomura, again he wasted 6 years for his own FF project and all he had to show for it were a couple of trailers. I wouldn't exactly want someone like that working for me. I definitely think he was good back in the day (Early Kingdom Hearts and character design), ever since Versus XIII got taken away from him however, something changed in him. Can't describe what it is.

I'm going to go watch Advent Children and enjoy it, just because it apparently pisses some of you off.

Then I'll go download FF7 and an emulator and play it, and enjoy it.

how fucking dare you

every moment that you're enjoying yourself with that TRASH is a child dying in the third world from lack of good video games.

you're a murderer. shame on you, hitler.

The Spirits Within was alright, for a video game movie.

On a different note, after FF7 what game should I play next? My experience with FF is exclusively through whichever GBA game had Kefka.

FF9.

It depends on what you like:

- Story => FFT
- Epicness => FF9
- Mechanics => FFVIII
- Hallways => FFXIII
- Annoying twinks => FFX/FFXII

I’ve heard the whole musical thing with nomura, was completely fabricated bullshit.

It's like I and @Berrakh said. Ignoring the alternate timeline nonsense, they threw way too much too early which may not be so bad of a problem just as long as they effectively gloss over the crap we don't really need to wade through.

Everything but the main storyline is not faithful to the original and it's going to hurt the overall story by the end.

As regarding "autistic purists"... I had no expectation this game or any follow-ups would follow every (and I mean every) plot point of the original, and quite frankly, in some cases (Cosmo Canyon, Corel, and Fort Condor) I honestly wouldn't care if they glossed over them or just make them sidequests.

As far as story changes go besides the alternate timeline crap and too much foreshadowing, I didn't really have that much of a problem with. I certainly don't have a problem if they had wanted to spend more time fleshing out characters (minus Red XIII) specifically at Midgar so as not to worry about doing it later. My main concern is that I think they'll still insist on having players tread through ground which they really don't need to cover anymore (i.e. the Nibelheim flashback and Cosmo Canyon in particular).

I’ve heard the whole musical thing with nomura, was completely fabricated bullshit.

As much as I can't stand Nomura, I still can't believe that story is true nor to be honest would I want to believe it to be true out of some kind of spite. Somethings are just better left unknown.

On another note, I'm starting to think they might as well give you the airship at Junon. It would certainly save the characters/players the trouble of having to trek all over the place which we know they were never going to allow anyway. Can't say this would bother me too much as long as they tried to handle Cid's story line a bit at Junon. We'll have to see. One thing is for sure, if they do this, I can't see them not hark on Aeris being able to ride an airship this time around.

I wouldn't be surprised if FFVIIR2 starts with Cloud waking up and that fight with Sephiroth was just him having visions of the future at this point.

Pretty much... It's that or we hear a Mog yell cut or that's a wrap at the end and we see the characters presented as actors which, I'll admit, I would be very amused at that. It might bother me in terms of some of the game's more serious/emotional points, but it would certainly bring a smile to my face.

I want this to happen to see the reactions from the hardcore fanbase.

Maybe it was, but when a guy now has several musical numbers in his games, it’s hard to ignore Occam’s razor.

In regards to future installments, I’m wondering if they are going to adopt FFX’s approach to the overworld. For those who aren’t familiar, that would mean just a couple of very linear paths that lead directly to the next location/plot point.

Before seeing how they ended the first installment and the implications it carries, I thought that the second installment should begin with the Nibelheim flashback and end with them finding the rebuilt Nibelheim, but who knows now? Part of me thinks they will release this is seven parts to try to be cute.

FFX has a fair amount of backtracking to find hidden items/ultimate weapons. While the main story was railroaded there was still a lot of side stuff to do that would benefit your party. However, I'll admit dodging 200 lightning bolts in a row was a bullshit requirement for an ultimate weapon.
