OT about Gary specifically: Never understood the hate. I know you may not agree, my opinion is Gary Johnson>Bernie Sanders. GJ has an excellent record and his personal life is impressive and scandal free. He's messed up a lot of times in public speaking and sounded like an autist, and Austin Peterson tried hard to troll him. But I think the hate is really unfair compared to most politicians who lie like snakes.

To be fair, when people in the US who aren't completely braindead refer to socialized healthcare or universal healthcare, they do refer to this system which is found in the West, where most healthcare is nationalized and paid through taxes in one way or another. I'll just give my country's example, your basic health insurance is paid through your employer, meaning that your employer is the one who pays the money for your insurance monthly, of course in practice that means that it's you who actually pays it because your employer doesn't just pay out of his own pocket out of the goodness of his own heart, but deducts your health insurance payment from your gross wage. Then there's additional insurance, which covers some drugs and hospital expenses, which are handled by private companies.
In the end, the only ones who truly get healthcare for free are the underaged, since they're insured through one of their parents and the parent doesn't accrue any additional fees when they have one or multiple children insured through them.

Most people who talk about public healthcare don't understand the difference between free healthcare and state-funded healthcare, which is what most of Latin America (to put a low example) has. Here, the state builds the infrastructure and systems they need (hospitals, etc) and the people have to pay for it BESIDES your taxes. The state healthcare we have goes two ways: one is for people with jobs: your employer takes about 10% of your salary to fund it and you have full coverage for you and your family as long as you are working and that goes for when you retire. The other one is for everybody, but you have to pay about $10 for each person to have full coverage. There is one free, but it's very simple and it's more preventive than a place where you can go if you feel sick.

Libertarianism as a philosophy has some actually good ideas to apply to your personal life... That is, if you actually understand it, and don't just call yourself "libertarian" because you want to be special or something.
