The prohibition is to prevent associating anything to Allah. The Quran is absolutely full of warnings. Muslims are literally paranoid with this shit. Those that retvrned to tradition and became Salafi, Wahabbi, etc. went as far as to demolish former places where Muhammad lived or prayed just to prevent Muslims from falling into the sin of shirk, when the idea is that Allah is equally worshipped anywhere, even in a desert without buildings.
