Call of Duty Thread - Potential return to form? Or nothing but cope on the horizon? You decide!

Black Ops 2 and Advanced Warfare were the best of the franchise purely because of how bug fucking nuts the stories got.
BO2's main story was alright, I just wish they did more with it. Have the US military actually be weakened by their over-reliance on technology and use that concept for more than one mission. Hell, if you really want to be brave with the idea, use it to show how our over-reliance on impersonal methods of warfare have desensitized us to the realities of war.

Cordis Die was also wasted potential; it could have been used more centrally as a reflection of the CIA's favorite strategy of creating and backing foreign anti-government groups; being used against America itself by someone who was a victim of that tactic. Instead, from what I remember, it was a social media campaign somehow linked to a random mid-eastern terror group that only really did anything in a 10 second audio clip during one of the endings.

CoD: World At War will always be my favorite even though I played Modern Warfare 2 more.

Its probably the best thematic portrayal of WW2 in a single player story (also up there are the early Medal of Honors). Obviously the game doesn't portray WW2 accurately to how it was really fought and its combat is not realistic, its still just a Call of Duty game. However, the story and presentation was top notch. The shear brutality, visceral imagery, and the ambiance of the music and sound design really capture all the thematic aspects of the war. Arms and legs getting blown off from grenades, machine guns ripping people apart, flames engulfing enemies, the Japanese banzai charges, the bombed out hellscape that was Berlin. WaW nailed the imagery of what WW2 was really like. Not to mention the loading sequences that set the stage for the next level gave some good history and were extremely immersive.

Personally I'd like a game that explores the second Sino-Japanese War, but that would invariably be too spicy for the Chinese market.
Also yes, of course Activision is going to suck China's dick. Why would you expect otherwise?

I appreciate WaW for setting Black Ops and to an extent creating a really good trilogy of Single player campaigns. Black Ops 3 single player is ass, only redeeming quality is Zombies on PC for modability.

I was kind of hoping it was a reboot taking place in the new MW universe. The Black Ops "story" went off the rails with BO3 and BO4

I mean, I'll take what I can get though when it comes to Cold War era stuff.

It actually may still take place in the MW universe. New Warzone content is referencing this game and there's rumors it may start a "divergent timeline" that ignores BO2/3/4 and tie into MW.

We'll see. I kinda liked BO2 but 3/4 were so bad I wouldn't mind them being retconned out of existence.

I didnt even consider that. Thatd be cool. I liked BO2 but I'd give it up to keep Mason and Hudson around longer

Personally, I'd like to see a World at War remake/reboot that ties into the Black Ops reboot and the Modern Warfare one. Unless they intended for Call of Duty: WWII to fill that role, which I highly doubt.

If this is a direct sequel, hopefully, it will pick back up on the plot point that Mason, Weaver and Hudson have seen too much and have been marked for death.
It just might, and maybe they go rogue due to the machinations of this "Proteus".

Throw in Woods and maybe even old Tricky Vic, and this can be a pretty cool campaign.

Imagine if they went full balls-out on that concept: play the Japanese through Marco Polo Brdge, the Rape of Nanking, the Battle of Nanjing, make them take part in the utter fucking fuck of that campaign, then swap them to the Chinese perspective going into the second half of the game as the war starts turning against Japan, and fight them back, exacting revenge on the invaders. It'd make World at War look like a fucking water balloon fight.

My only hope is that COD Cold War doesn't fuck up Warzone, whatever the relation may be. I don't want a Warzone 2 yet.

I don't know how true this is, but I've heard that with each new call of duty it'll have a new map and new weapons from that game. Again I don't know. But knowing how activision loves milking yearly releases it would make sense for them to have a new one every year. Will it be an update to warzone or will it be a new stand alone BR that uses warzone as a base then change shit (like every call of duty)? I'm leaning towards the latter.

Treyarch did their own BR mode with Blackout but you had to buy Black Ops 4 to access it. AND they stopped updating Black Ops 4 with Operation: Dark Divide.

Infinity Ward, as of now, has Warzone as a separate free download from Modern Warfare and they are still updating both games for free. Time will time. I hope they don't segment their releases like that anymore so quickly.
