I think that Bob and even Barb had hopes for him while he was in school. They sacrificed for him to see that he had a chance for regular schooling and pushed him to do things (perhaps a little too much). But at some point they realized there was no hope and kind of gave up. I think that point was when they realized that the trolling was a big problem and it wasn't going to stop. Bob kept fighting for a little bit with his lumberjack ways, but I think he got tired and didn't have any way of stopping the barreling locomotive of autism that his son was producing. He pulled back and just let Chris do what he was going to do as long as he stayed in his room. After Bob died, Barb figured if you can't beat em, join em, and cynically encouraged Chris to cash in on his notoriety. Bob and Barb in the Manchester High days seem to have been actually working toward something for Chris. But that fell apart like a house of cards, and they didn't have a plan B so they just gave up.

That’s a rather uncharitable and at least partially unfair interpretation.

Look, facts are facts and nothing would have been easier than just stick Chris in a tard-home and Bob could have enjoyed his retirement in peace and quiet.

But instead they sacrificed quite a bit and even had Bob move away with just Chris. Looking after an autistic preteen isn’t the easiest thing in the world when you’re in your sixties.


There’s also no evidence of Bob being embarrassed by bringing Chris out in public. Like when he went on a date.

(Church was also always Bob’s gig, and he made to effort to haul Chris along with him, despite knowing that it would mean a good 5-10 minutes of toe curling emberassment as Chris would talk about his lack of a girlfriend or “the twolls” in public during the service.)

Bob and especially Barb had some major failings as parents, but I gotta disagree on much of what you wrote.

I guess this would be an evolution of "cartoons are real" and turned into "use imagination to escape existential sorrow". I think it was 2016 when Chris said death would come for Bob. Se he was upset that the Grim Reaper came earlier than what was said to him in a dream. Either way, it's odd he'd believe in a dream so vehemently but it's not new for Chris.

Bob and Barb were trying to help Chris when he was in high school. They lived in a different town to help him and they paid people to be his friends. I think his performance at graduation was a wake up call for them that they were investing in someone who had no hope. By the time the love quest came along, all Bob could say was phooey.

Chris is and has always been heavily motivated by attention. Whatever gives him the most attention will be the person he engages with the most. A plethora of fake girlfriends tricked him on a near constant basis, and it did not matter to him because all that mattered to him was that someone was paying attention to him. Because his lack of any real coping skills or support system he also absorbed primarily negative attention and interactions that reinforced his escape into fantasy.

When Chris was proved not to be able to make even minimum wage at a job, Bob made sure to get him the most money available, and ended up having to take room & board out, and even after Bob died, Barb routinely gets on Chris to give her money. Like i said up thread, the idea that Chris could get a job in rural Virginia in autoCAD is absurd and barb wouldnt have let him leave either, remove the autism, fuck it remove everything about Chris and have him be a super athletic genuis with a masters in autoCAD, he still would have a hard time getting a job beyond retail because the opportunities arent there in rural Virginia. If bob wasnt a stupid old fart he would have realized that.

Beyond that some dedicated autist needs to learn how/why his first marriage failed its rather odd that we dont know why bob and barb are the horrible first spouse to other couples but it would be a great indicator of why theyre so fucked up.

Also from what we know of Barb shes essentially Chris with a functioning vagina, i guarantee you none of us would fuck Barb on her best day, so if Bob the Chad considered her a catch you have to imagine how bad his lovequest had failed thus far.

As for when to save Chris, that autism would be his main failing, even taking him away from his parents the way his brain works would fuck him up and keep him from doing most tasks well. Id honestly be surprised if he was any good at the games he plays. Even Chris admitted the way his brain was damaged was preventing him from having a better life. Unless you could fix his brain nothing would have made him improve
