Thing is, he could totally make bank leaning into this shit if he wasn't also so supremely unlikeable as a person.
We've seen how much of a shitty actor Phil is. As much as he has tried to retcon that him raging and being retarded were part of a character also named Phil (he doesn't play characters or acts like an idiot on camera, btw, you always get the real, unfiltered King of Hate Phil, no gimmicks), it's better when he rages and then later tries to play it off as a minor inconvenience or something that happens because he's that passionate about games (even though most streamers don't act like toddlers but whatever, I guess they're not real gamers).
If he were to lean into it and rage for the camera, it would suck massive monkeys

Phil is at his best when he's being himself, just a loud, crybaby retarded keyboard warrior. Old Phil was entertaining because of that, he's not someone intelligent, skilled or insightful, and his idea of being honest is the idea a spoiler 6 y/o has when they are rude and tell their grandparents to fuck off and just go "WHAT?? I'M JUST BEING HONEST!!".
Which is why I have no doubt in my heart that he will start to try and lean into it the second one of his whales retires.
I feel like Phil's final stage prior to returning to Renton and throwing Dave and Linda's rotting corpses into the trash disposal and fucking it up will be him "realizing" he took himself so seriously for so long because he was an immature 50 y/o kid and will try to embrace his meme status, and in true Phil's fashion, he will attempt to make skit gameplay segments after having shifted to pahlitiks and react to himself content trying to re-capture the second thing he's most known for but failing and just looking pathetic.
