Dead Space Thread

Doesn't having a hub area really ruin the horror atmosphere in a game? The mindset when you play a survival horror game should always be "I need to get out of here ASAP and every detour should be only if I'm sure it will be worth it". If the player goes "oh I can't wait to go back to hellholes to make the gun shoot better" then something went wrong.
Maybe the only exception is something like Dark Souls if the NPCs start dying off.
This is also one of the few gripes I have with the RE2 Remake: Mr X doesn't enter the save rooms. So you can just "hide2 in the save room wait till his crushing foot steps are gone and you can be on your merry way

He enters the initial precinct's room, doesn't he? I distinctly remember running away from him around the typewriter and having to choose which route to risk going through to escape him.

Played a little bit of the remake on the weekend. Biggest gripe so far is that both Nicole and Isaac look way worse than their original depictions. Nicole clearly had one day left until retirement because she looks about as old, and Isaac is such a dramatic change from what he looked like before. At least then he looked troubled, like he had seen some shit, the new face is just weird.

You measn the main hall? I wouldn't call that a save room. But that is a discussion for the Resident Evil thread

Played the remake for a bit and wow… they fucking ruined Hammond’s character.

My feelings on the remake Hammond are mixed. I like the fact the he doesn't run into Hydroponics, inhale the gas and spend almost all of his remaining time in the game out of action ( Even though it was probably Kendra jamming his signal), and is still interacting and showing us stuff instead, but I think his new death scene is really bad in comparison to the original. Him falling completely under the marker's hallucinations and dying to a slasher-Chen is shit when compared to the original's desperate final stand against an enhanced Brute, the strongest non-boss enemy in the game.

As someone who is a die hard dead space fan to the point where I forgave the stuff they did to 3, I’m so far not liking this. It’s disappointing given that the dismemberment system and open world mechanics and Isaac Clarke talking are all solid, the story and canon beats so far have just been gutted or just flat out ruined.

Hammond is kind of whiny throughout where he was a stoic leader who had a mission to get everyone to safety, Kendra’s a feminist icon who’s the one who takes charge, with the only character remaining mostly intact being Isaac (who looks nothing like the original design but that’s beside the point). I’m legitimately beginning to hate this so far.

who looks nothing like the original design
That's because they made him look like his voice actor, Gunner Wright

Meh, I bought this yesterday after finishing the RE4 remake which I enjoyed. Surely a DS remake will be entertaining right? I'm just not getting on with this; I remember finishing the original a few times and enjoying it, but this...did the OG version have so many monsters literally spawn on you and behind you. Was it always so dark?
I dunno, I feel like I'm walking down one big corridor the entire game struggling to see things, and having monsters spawn on my head.

yeah the remake is much darker. maybe beacuse dark=more scary

The remake is now on Game Pass, so unless you're a historonic faggot who can't get over the bathroom signposts, there's no reason not to give it a shot.
The remake may look good graphically but it's clear that it was made for the consoles. The game runs like shit on PC, unlike the original.
Who thought that it was a great idea to have the game load in the background instead of having a main menu?

Get an SSD, scrub.

Unrelated, but I realised I've never played the Severed DLC for DS2. Is it just an extra dollop of dead space, or does it bring something new to the table?

It's fairly short, the mc's personality is different enough that you don't feel you're just playing as Isaac again and you get to see to how everything went to shit. I will never not be mad about the decision not to include the DLC in the Steam version. There was no reason not to have that shit. Definitely recommend playing it if you got an hour or two to kill though.

Finished the remake a while ago. About the technical aspects (seamless exploration of the USG Ishimura if you've completed the story chapters, GRAFIX and the improved control of Isaac) I have nothing special to say, because they're obviously improvements in comparison to the original. Except the rooms and corridors being too dark like it's DOOM3. The performance of the actors were eh at best. The only things that pissed me off were the depictions of Nicole, Kendra and the secret ending in its entirety.
And for the love of fucking god, do NOT change an established character to look like the fucking voice actor. This isn't the first game this shit happened.
IMO, DS2 cannot really be "improved" for a remake and if one is going to be released, I expect it to be worse than the original. And a lot of shit is going to be retconned, I guarantee it.

Even in the hard difficulty this game was pretty easy. I can count the times I died in the remake on one hand. In conclusion, this remake didn't need to be made and is a cash-grab.
