@Harbinger of Kali Yuga I would also like to see less plastic everywhere involving food (and I bet taste and smell of cheese can be negatively affected by how it's sealed) there are two products in the pic that are either in a metal tin or in paper wrap. This gives me hope of of slow but sure change in packaging in the US.

HFCS is such an additive, actually. It's put in monstrous amounts in damn near everything processed. There was also a period where American corner store sweets like Snickers and Crunch Bar and the like were "wax chocolate" which was during a mass chocolate shortage and strike of farmers and farm hands growing it. Mars Co. used Shea Butter instead. They kept adding Shea and Palm after that. It led to a massive rise in demand and price of dark chocolate because it was real chocolate.

Because it's mass-marketed to keep it shelf-stable for a long time. There's less of a demand for this kind of cheese. I have to really doubt that any of this cheese tastes as good as something off a cheese wheel in a European deli. Again, not saying it's bad, but America sort of takes these things and waters them down.

It's like saying, "WHAT DO YOU MEAN?? THEY HAVE PEE-ROGI IN AMERICA!"

Interestingly enough, Nestle is the less evil corporation. They are considered by a lot of Americans to be a lesser competitor with Mars because of branding but they try to make things organic. They even use colorants derived from red cabbage and some fruits to their ice creams/sorbets.

They think this cheese would largely taste as good as the equivalent in Europe.

I'd like to see a taste test but I highly doubt they're the same. While I doubt these taste bad at all
Yeah I'm sure they all taste pretty good but acting like it's a gotcha and it's top notch is really silly. :(

Supermarket plastic sealed cheese is not bad at all but it is the low tier, the kind you buy begrudgingly... especially if its some random imported cheese. Supermarkets and markets have their own place full of wheels and pieces of cheeses you can buy whole or for parts or slices much like cured meat and it's not especially fancy.

Also the variety is nice and all but aside from a few exceptions I would rather have the regional cheeses from my country instead of one from whatever factory of a a far away country.8)
 
@Harbinger of Kali Yuga It really depends on where you are. The Mid West has more Polish descended people. The Deep South has Kolaches everywhere but they are kind of present in every cuisine. I bet if you went to a rural area with a proper creamery that did like what @Karen Horney showed with the Farmer's Markets, it would still be different from European cheese but it would be better than plastic sealed stuff. At that point, it's just a cultural difference. Cheese just isn't so crucial to American cuisine in the way it is in many EuroContinental cuisines. We've also had the issue of humidity plus stagnant air which is why I can't believe anybody tried to make pasta at home here.

If I get around to it, I'll post pics of all the locally pecoessed meats filling my freezers but don't hold your breath. That shit would take time and it's not a great idea to par thaw a bunch of raw meat just to take a pic to own a forum ooperator.

The main thing with supermarket eggs in America is they've generally be washed and sanitized, and this process removes the natural membrane coating eggs which actually (ironically) helps protect them from bacteria and helps keep them fresh longer, which is also why store-bought American eggs need to be refrigerated
