DOOM

I like the super shotgun, the chain gun, and the plasma rifle, in that order.
Ooh, here's a tip ahead of time. The second level of Ancient Gods introduces the Spirits, who possess enemies and drastically increase their resistance. Notably, their resistance to the Super Shotgun and Ballista raises to around 75-80% with some enemies having upwards of 75% resistance against the chaingun, and you need the microwave beam to kill the Spirit for good. The rocket launcher, assault rifle, and shotgun are basically what you'll have to use if you want to take out the buffed enemies quickly.

This is the main part of my problem. I like the super shotgun, the chain gun, and the plasma rifle, in that order. You might have noticed the issue already - I like the ammosinks. I spend so much time out of ammo (for everything I'm competent with), looking for a lone weakling I can use my single chainsaw charge on.

The rocket launcher is useless except for very specific lock-on weaknesses. I suspected it the entire game, but the Icon proved it to me. I used to like the basic shotgun quite a lot, but endgame enemies shrug off everything but a perfectly aimed grenade to a destructible spot. The sniper rifle is good, but I'm not. I can only use it in conjunction with the slow time rune. The ballista is neat, but the plasma rifle outclassed it handily 90% of the time, and that was before I got the blast mastery that gives you buffed shots.
I recommend experimenting around with the other single shot weapons. The rocket launcher is a total beast when you learn to use it to its full potential, particularly exploiting quick weapon swap to get around the cooldown period after each shot. The icon isn't too bad if you use single shot hitscan weapons more, and even the rocket launcher can be pretty effective if you get a feel for when he's moving versus standing still. Don't be too worried about getting closer to compensate for the slow moving projectile, once you get used to his telegraphed attacks you can get in some good shots. The scoped rifle is great in this situation, you don't even need to aim. Just think of it as a ranged shotgun that you fire off the moment the scope is up. Rocket, Ballista, and Heavy Assault Rifle Scope are a good combo to cycle through to distribute your ammo usage across all types. That makes chainsawing significantly more efficient and less frequent. To me, single shot weapons are the core of an effective weapon rotation, whereas fully automatics are usually the more situational options.

As for relatively quick moving enemies, you can make use of other hitscans to make them flinch for a second, which helps keep them still long enough for the rocket to reach them. Cycling between the rocket and the scoped rifle is pretty popular in that regard. Also, putting aside the obvious ice bombs, grenades will also make enemies falter and have surprisingly good area of effect once fully upgraded.

I'll watch some of those videos you linked, but I strongly suspect I'm not missing much, I just need to get good.
It's almost always a little bit of the former and a little bit of the latter. The devs did a pretty good job adding layers to the combat. There's always another little wrinkle in the mechanics that can seemingly turn your playstyle on its head.

Another thing is that the Unmakyr replaces the Crucible as your single target nuke because the devs were less stingy with bfg ammo in the dlc due to the sword getting yeeted.

Yeah, this makes sense. I never use BFG ammo for single targets except Archviles, and that was mostly to control their add swarm, so the unmakyr hasn't gotten much play from me.

This has been an issue, too. I would give just about anything to have guns of a type stacked on num keys, half-life style, because that weapon wheel just does not click with my brain on mouse+keyboard, and looking at some people's custom keybinds is brainmelting. It's actually to the point I'm strongly considering using a controller, as heretical as that is, but if I'm already having trouble keeping pace, relearning the controls with an inferior system may not be the play.

I strongly recommend getting a mouse with those two thumb buttons on the side, if you don't already have one. They're not an expensive feature, and they're seriously handy for just about any game. Beyond that, just make a mental note of which buttons are the easiest to reach, and prioritize your most useful weapons for those buttons. Also, if you have a scroll wheel, both scrolling up and scrolling down count as distinct button presses. There's a surprising amount of options. Of course, the caveat is that just about any rebinding is going to take some getting used to before you feel the benefits. I'll be honest, I have never used the weapon wheel and flat out do not see the appeal of it.

While I do agree that number stacking could be nice, I imagine it could also potentially make quick swapping harder if you can't map a specific key to bring out a specific weapon on the first press. They could make it customizable, but that opens up a whole can of worms with regards to both implementation and potential bugginess.

There was a leak that happened a few days ago. I've found two articles that mentions it and and it has some alleged leaked screenshots.

Assuming any of it is true, don't click on either of the links unless you want to be spoiled.

Beaten Eternal on Ultra-Violence.

Holy hell what a ride. Khan Mayker was annoying as shit to deal with, but everything else was awesome. Such a huge improvement over 2016 in every way I feel.

The incessant loading screen tips and pop ups were kinda annoying, but hey, I bet the PC version has mods to take that shit out, so it's not a big deal.

Overall, great game. It carries the name DOOM, but with all the new additions and how combat flows, it's pretty much its own beast at this point.

Not sure if I'll take on the DLC yet, especially since there's only one part right now, and it's supposedly really fucking hard.

Oh hey, most of my issues are in that fix list. Hope it's real!

All I hope is the ending is at least satisfying. I'm a little worried it's gonna pull some horseshit and make it that the Doom Slayer was in the wrong the entire time. The main story gave me a lot of God of War III vibes in that other characters repeatedly warn the Slayer to stop because he'll end up destroying everything. Not to mention it seems having a shit ending is the norm among major titles these days.

I'm expecting the ending to be wholly unremarkable. The giant armies are likely going to be background set pieces, and if you ever do get into a mech it'll be for a cutscene. Doomguy either dies killing the bad guy or walks away looking badass with the vague implication that he'll eventually have more demons to fight. The actual gameplay, on the other hand, I have high hopes for. The hammer(hellbreaker?) sounds much more interesting than the Crucible.

I'm still surprised it comes out tomorrow.

Well, no more excuses. Need to stop messing around and beat part one.

Nowadays we get announcements for upcoming announcements and trailers for trailers. Can we please get a chance to pilot those Atlans?
