Yeah, you could do that for a while, but you guys lack any way to purify water, you don't have salt or any way to extract it from the water, and brining meat involves the removal of almost all water.

You eventually reach the corner of the flat earth. There is an island sitting at the very corner. A sign on the edge says "Please do not enter - Under Construction" There is a single door in the middle of nowhere visible on the island.

It doesn't say "don't fire a ballista through this door."

So I think if we can, we set up the ballista right outside it, set the ballista on fire, and then shoot it through this thing.

A plus to this is presumably if whatever is inside wants to come out, it has to do it one by one so we can hold off an angry mob pretty well.

Maybe there is a wizard casting FATAL on the other side. You know the spell that kills everyone in the universe forever that any wizard can cast with the right roll.

Can't you roll this spell as a miscast as well? So you can accidentally kill everyone and everything in the universe?

You fire at the door, shattering it. Now it's just an empty door frame leading into an empty cavern. However, if you walk around behind it, there is nothing there. You guys also killed a man who was about to open the door. He's dressed up like an ancient Roman. Other than his toga, there is nothing of value on his body.
 
Lazy-Carcass congratulates the crew, another potential threat dealt with in a professional and timely manner, he then cautiously surveys the cavern taking care to not actually enter.
 
I have a lantern if the lighting is poor. Anyone who needs it can have it. There's still one flask of oil.

I don't actually need it, since I'm a subterranean troll and have low light vision anyway.

Other than its reality defying properties, the doorway has no unusual reactions to you guys. The cavern inside is quite well lit from an unseen light source further inside.
