I think about 2.5 years ago they banned some well known US VSav player from attending a bunch of local tournaments because of allegations of misgendering some troon. I wish I remember his name, I used to play VF with him online a few times, but Yurop to CA connections are garbage so I didn't get too many matches in with him.

The moment netcode became good enough to let shut-ins play the game, it was doomed. The FGC was full of such outstanding personalities because people had to go to a local arcade or get together in a guy's garage to play at the top level. You needed to be right up in someone's face in public. Sometimes literally shoulder to shoulder at a cabinet. It's a totally different experience that creates totally different players.

I'm happy to report that the FGC has been solved. Thanks to the efforts of the Fighting Game Community Code of Conduct Communications the FGC is now an inclusive space. They just released their updated website that has the full rules. Now TOs can point to this if they want to kick people out of tournaments with no societal backlash to them or something.

In this wonderful document is incredible and vague rules, such as:

3.1.3. Engaging in malicious bullying, baiting, trolling, or other verbal harassment or abuse that rises to a level beyond commonly accepted FGC trash talking.

3.1.19. Engaging in any illegal activity or unauthorized infringement of any other person’s rights.

3.1.22. Advocating for, encouraging, being an accomplice to, or threatening to engage in any potential violations.

and my personal favorite:

3.1.9. Creating a nuisance or hazard by neglecting personal hygiene, refusing to take appropriate hygienic or medical precautions, or engaging in or encouraging others to commit any hygienically or medically unsafe behavior.

Smash players are done for.


The best part is this document offers an entire section on THE GOVERNING BODY. It includes no less than EIGHT committees.

4.3. COMMITTEES. The Governing Body will have eight committees: the Moderation Committee, the Investigations Committee, the Code of Conduct Committee, the Tools and Record-Keeping Committee, the Legal Committee, the Inclusion and Diversity Committee, the Public Relations Committee, and the Collegiate Committee.

What could an Inclusion and Diversity Committee possibly have anything to do with the FGC other than cancel people on twitter? Disallow black people from signing up to a marvel tournament because there's already too many? Too many asians in the Guilty Gear pool? Can't sign up any more smash players, we're full on pedos? This document is incredible.

They've released the signatories for this document, including those who are in the GOVERNING BODY. I don't know a single person on this list besides Ultradavid, who of course would be in this position. I stand and applaud this progressive step, next let's unionize the players so we can organize strikes against...pools or Skullgirls again or something... Hopefully now we can finally get to what fighting games are all about, making sure no one's feelings get hurt.

This has bothered me for quite some time. I thought the FGC was kind of like what GamerGate was in that there is no "leaders" and that everyone governs themselves. When the fuck did they start giving individual people authoritarian power to do shit like this?

It applies to all the players, tournament organizers, staff, streamers, commentators, posters, chatters, and so on who attend, run, or use the tournaments, Discord servers, and other community gathering places that have signed on to enforce it.

In the wake of so many recent examples of abuse, bigotry, and other bad actions in our scene, we must recognize that we have not done enough to keep our community members safe.

First of all, thots crying about being hit-on at a place thats like 99.9% a sausage fest does NOT count as any of those things. Trannies can get fucked as well because they are ALWAYS bitching/moaning/complaining about SOMETHING even if it's events they exclusively own and operate (see GDQ). Second, if by "keeping your community members safe" you actually mean "get rid of naughty language" then...

A. Good luck preventing blacks from saying "nigga/nigger" cause they do it all the time.
B. It's adults that participate in tourney events. Adults can say whatever the fuck they want. Words don't hurt, just grow a thicker skin you fucks and stop being so fragile.

Previously, we’ve only relied on individual tournament organizers and professional tours to conduct their own disciplinary actions. Unfortunately, that kind of piecemeal approach not only unfairly places too big a burden on those TOs, it also necessarily ends up in decisions that can come across as dogpiling, that can feel inconsistent, or that are made by people you may not even know. We hope that this code of conduct, created by the community to be enforced quickly and uniformly by a diverse committee of community members, will solve these problems.

These fuckers have no self-awareness, do they? By telling people what to say, how to say it, when they can say it, etc... you are effectively taking away the "trash-talking spirit" (or at least what little was left of it) from the FGC. With all these asinine rules that practically invite special snowflakes to take control of the asylum, even something as mundane as "lol you're bad/you suck" will trigger the fuck out of them.

Also fuck you... you don't get to decide what is considered "fun" or "exciting", those are completely opinionated feelings that are unique and different to everyone. To me, these rules don't make playing fighting games fun... they make me want to stay the fuck away from them like the plague.

1. You're already minimizing what can/can-not be said at these places, and 2. For the record, I'm not a tourney player... never have been, never will be. If anything I'm a filty casual that loves fighting games. Good news everyone. Ultradavid has updated the updated Code of Conduct. Ultradavid, who is in the G O V E R N I N G B O D Y, has written updated patch notes for the CoC. In it are obvious walk-backs of the power grab like:

C. Paragraph 1.5. i. Deleted "if any Third Party Rules conflict with this Code of Conduct, this Code of Conduct will take precedence"

and

III. Section 3: Conduct A. Section 3.1. generally i. Deleted "Engaging in... intentional hiding of one's identity"

while also setting up better for post-CoC cancellations from the past once they find someone they don't like and dig into decade old-tweets:

D. Paragraph 2.2.2. i. Changed "Because the violations prohibited by this Code of Conduct were already obviously bad, and because the goal of this Code of Conduct is to protect Participants now and in the future, Participants may be subject to disciplinary actionunder this Code of Conduct for violations committed before this Code of Conduct was first adopted if those violations suggest that the Participants may be likely to continue to engage in more violations in the future" to "The Governing Body may make Recommendations under this Code of Conduct for Violations committed by Participants before this Code of Conduct was first adopted, as long as those Violations are part of an ongoing pattern that indicates that a Participant is likely to engage in more Violations in the future"

and protecting the G O V E R N I N G B O D Y from scandals and responsibility:

C. Paragraph 5.4. i. Changed "The Governing Body and the Signatories will enforce" to "The Signatories will enforce"

Obviously people are not super duper thrilled with having an invisible sheet control them in the FGC when the FGC is essentially known for being the trash-talking roughhouse of gaming. Those who aren't afraid of saving the wrong thing yet on twitter are voicing concerns.

The thing is in large part the FGC is so dead and the rest is so cancelled that no one is really talking about it, outside of Jiyuners making fun of it
and the cancelled who have not much else to fear.

This would all be a lot more interesting if the world had tournaments still, but since coroner-chan fear will be here forever having in-person tournaments again seems like a pipe dream. If they do ever come back, expect this doc and the eight committees to be in headline FGC news, if they hadn't imploded under the bureaucracy by then.
