For novice Save the World players, it's imperative you do the "Misfit Toys" questline that's currently available. It gives you Jilly Teacup who gives you the team perk Happy Holidays, which lowers your ability cooldowns and is extremely useful for loadouts centered on the TEDDY or minigun abilities. Combined with Enforcer Grizzly as your commander, you can place TEDDY faster than it runs out. This is what people call "infinite TEDDY" and you'll see some of it if you play with randoms. This kind of build can carry you until well into Canny Valley, at which point you'll want to get into loadouts that buff weapons instead of abilities.Any ideas? This is a very fun mode; would love to be able to dive in further.
Unfortunately a lot of the meta loadouts require heroes from seasonal events, and the only way to get them outside the event periods is with Hero Recruitment Vouchers, which you can only get by playing Ventures, which is a big slog. So getting fully kitted out is a waiting game and not just a grind. But you can still make good loadouts and have fun without meta heroes, it's just more work.
If you have enough gold, you want to buy all the Legendary Flux from the weekly shop each week, which you can use to get most heroes from the Collection Book. If you have a surplus of gold you might also get the lower grades of flux, so you can cheaply get heroes for their perks and worry about maxing them out later. Buying the event heroes in the event shop is important too - Subzero Zenith, Ice Queen and Lynx Kassandra from the current shop are must-haves.
You want to get Legendary and Mythic survivors whenever you have the opportunity. Survivors make up the bulk of your power level. You can get heroes and survivors from Llamas and mission alerts, keep an eye out for good ones.
One of the best resources for guides and advice is, may Allah forgive me, r/FORTnITE. It is also pretty much the only place the developers post patch notes or communicate. The best site for checking and filtering mission alert rewards is FortniteDB.
Regarding weapons, they massacred my boy the Xenon Bow so the next best that everyone uses is the Vacuum Tube Bow. Once you upgrade it to Tier 3 its chain lightning perk can nuke crowds of enemies, the only downside is that it's locked to doing Nature element damage. You can flux it from Expansion Schematics -> Vacuum Tube Weapons. The Xenon Bow (under Neon Weapons) is still good and worth having once you come to terms with it requiring the same precision as other bows and no longer nuking crowds of enemies. It's great for cheesing husks with shields, for instance.
There are of course good weapons in other types besides bows, but they're more evenly balanced, so just try them to see what you like. If you regret investing in something you can get the resources back by recycling the schematic.
