The Others in the books and the White Walkers in the show are almost certainly totally different things in terms of origin anyway. Just like the Children's motives.As far as the story goes, and it's been a while since I've read the books. I think the remnants that are with Bran are literally the last 8 or 9 of them that surrounded themselves around the Greenseer.
There is some weird magic that surrounds the cave that they maintain, which keeps the white walkers out, but ironically seals them in. There hasn't been much explanation past that point, and the series dropped the Bran/warg story line after the last of them get eliminated rescuing him once he becomes the new Greenseer.
As for the books, Bran is still in the cave IIRC, so likely GRRM will give more info on the actual history, when he gets around to actually writing the books.
The Others being created by the Children of the Forest is purely a show invention.

Thinking back, its funny how D&D undercut their own narrative by having Ollie kill Ygritte at Castle Black. Its clear now that Ygritte's death was supposed to foreshadow and mirror Dany's death, and that the guilt over (probably) killing Ygritte was meant to play a large part in Jon's reluctance to act against Dany.
Oh well, at least we got that amazing Potato Boy arc.

Maybe, but it's still weird they'd include that. Like wtf. Is someone honestly going to collect all the figures out there just to set them up by in a table with a map of Westeros to simulate a scene from the show that bombed in the end?

I just imagined a hardcore fan of the atrocious last season setting out to collect all the figures and then, 10 or so years from now, he looks over his map and his miniatures, then realizes in utter shock that the pieces for Euron's fleet are missing. So he murmurs to himself "Geez, I totally forgot about Euron's fleet". Then he cries.

You've got the extended editions which is like what, 11-12 hours total? I just don't see a need. Jackson did it with such love and passion. I feel like it doesn't lend itself to a show.
But whatever. Maybe they're like "Well, all the books are already there, so its not like they have to work off cliffnotes and fuck it up." Oh yeah, trust these two faggots who crammed like 2 and a half books into one season, marking the downfall of the show when HBO would have given them anything. Once something gets too hard they give the fuck up and walk away. They basically knew they could do whatever they wanted and went 'lol fuck the audience we're bored and out of here'.
And no shocker they didn't show up to ComicCon. Those fucks would have got pelted with batteries and had chairs thrown at them. Game of Thrones was fucking booed lol. If they went there it would have made the 'Walk of Shame' look like a leisurely stroll.

From what I understand, the LOTR show is supposed to cover Aragorn's early life (bear in mind he's about 90 during the events of the War of the Ring) which there's relatively little documentation on. He clearly learned how to ranger and kindled his romance with Arwen (and hung out with her brothers, if memory serves) but it's a fairly open premise.

No. The closest analogue is Tarantino, whose scripts are like novels, but these are not Tarantino scripts. Even comparing them is an insult. Typically there are stage directions and things like that. Its very cut and dry usually.
If it were a normal script, you'd just go 'Jon and Sansa look at each other with a mixture of sadness and concern.' Again, its direction for the emotion of the actors. Not that they fucking failed geography. You'd also basically state matter-of-factly that Drogon burns the throne. Its literal garbage.
The only good thing is that I looked it up and they're not on LOTR.
