A decade ago he could pass as a slightly dimwitted eccentric guy but now he's ranting about dimensional merges in court and trying to cast spells on the judge. If he's found guilty he'll be in protective custody the entire time or a mental ward instead of prison.

Actually he's even more fucked if the second option happens. In prison you get released once your sentence is up. In a mental hospital you are detained until you are found competent which for Chris would be life because he will never be found to be mentally sound.

it can be, it does vary from case to case situation, but yeah, being locked up in jail often can count towards time served.

The guiding principle in legal encounters with Chris is a very strong and specific desire not to deal with him, on the part of the courts. They're quite happy to pretend he doesn't exist, and whether that's because he's in a cell or on the streets doesn't make much difference to them. Every continuance, ruling, order, and verdict in this case will be directed toward getting the court system back to ignoring Chris as expediently as possible.
